If you want black to be your background you might want to try to paint the canvas black before you start :)

I appreciate the suggestion, but when I do that, the colours either appear desaturated, or I have to under-paint all of the other areas with several layers of white, (which is even more work).

I actually like it, thought I admit it doesnt look too much like a map.

The end product reminds of a river goind around some metal pole debris esque area, non the less I still like it. :)

The blue is actually water - the image is the coast line of Lake Ontario. It got overlapped by another image, making it look like a river.
