@mekdod thats funny, you're complaining about ONE season that the media wasn't slobbering all over peyton, BIG DEAL. and yes, the media did say "wants he wins" if you would have been watching espn superbowl week you would have seen it and i can't believe you're trying to pretend peyton manning doesn't do a lot of commercials haha yeah right. Don't get me wrong, i like peyton manning, he's a new orleans native and he's done alot for the city, i just hated the love fest the media has for him.
@mekdod ARE YOU SERIOUS? the media has a bigger love affair with peyton manning!! he is in half of the commercials on tv and the whole superbowl week all i heard was "once manning wins this superbowl he will be considered the greatest ever" like it already happened and no one gave the saints a shot. we deserve a celebration, thank you very much
@saintsgirl223 i live in INDIANAPOLIS. I saw a grand total of 0. They dont do those things like "when he wins" especially since 18-0 pats lost in the super bowl. all this season i heard Peyton Manning sloop, 11 picks in 3 weeks (due to him having to coach since caldwell doesnt) and tom brady gonna cruise to super bowl, against saints? all three lost in the first game.
how can you hate onn a guy like drew bress, he is a classy guy down to earth, its not his fault the media talks about him so much and i love payton dont hate on drew brees...who dat!
@blisterfa507 HA! peyton just stormed off the field hen he lost the superbowl without shaking hands or anyything. peyton was born and raised in new orleans so i still like him but come on drew is just awesome
I think its funny how Drew Brees won the freakin' SUPER BOWL less than 10 months ago and no one is talking about him anymore, lol. Everyones all like "Oh, Bret Favre, Eli Manning, Archie Manning, Ben Rothlisburger, ect" lol. Seriously, He had his 15 minutes of fame and his pic on a Wheaties box, then BOOM, he was gone! Funny thing is he is doing better than all these other suckers STILL and everyones still "oh, Bret favre, Micheal Vick, Peyton Manning, ect" lol
@billydumont dude, where have you been? they are STILL talking about it, and its the PLAYOFFS OF THE NEXT SEASON. im a colts fan, and all i hear is "DREW BREES" "DREW BREES" "SAINTS SUPER BOWL" "SEAN PAYTON" and all that crap. and not to mention the media's love affair with him and the Saints
It was a magical time going to Purdue with Brees at his prime in college football. I remember when we won that final game prior to going to the Rose Bowl. He didn't bring it home, but man, did he fix it and win an even BIGGER prize, the Super Bowl.
My favorite Brees moment: 99 yard touchdown to vinny sutherland against NW'stern. I was watching the game with my mom, and she was like "damn, he's good!" :)
@LuvRemyanJack yep he was...i'm not a hater on brees believe me...that was an incredible performance...he was pressured and he found his reads over and over...great great performance.
see people how little just a win in the sb means? drew brees has now b een subpar for over 5 games...just because u win the sb doenst mean you;re a great qb. Would manning ever lose to the cardinals with max hall at qb? Or tom brady? seriously, trent dilfer won a sb so its not exactly the proof you need for a great qb
@TheSlothook how bout you check the stats before you make a fool out of yourself. brees is in the top five in every major statistical category for qbs right now. you can stfu now. the brees has nothing to do with the saints problems.
@dRUnkHIGHLANDERS You're half right. hes too great a qb to be subpar technically, but he has been subpar by elite qb standards. His team is averaging 19pts a game and the truth is though, hes faced some subpar competition...the panthers at home who are winless...22 pts on the niners with all those turnovers...the loss to the cardinals wasn't all his fault but even greg cosell who does the nfl matchup show has said hes played poorly overall by his standards
@dRUnkHIGHLANDERS and if the niners didnt turn the ball over 5 times on fluky plays they should've won. THey also barely beat the winless panthers at home against jimmie clausen and they lost to the cardinals with max hall at qb? the same cardinals that got destroyed by the falcons and chargers. I have seen all the saints games, brees isn't playing as well as i am used to seeing... and even the scouts agree with me btw.
@TheSlothook Man dude this is the NFL,everyone is a good team.you cant say because they lost to this team, who this team beat. it doesnt work like that,he's missing the spread of the field from reggie bush and pierre thomas. But look how he played vs pitts,he knows when he needs to make the big play
@NEWDAYINAGE I wish people wouldn't misunderstand me. I just felt like we shudnt be so quick to hail brees the greatest just yet, hes been to the playoffs three times...let his career continue. I never said he wasn't great, he is absolutely fantastic as a qb. I think hes easily better than brady. I won't get into manning and brees, but hes just fantastic.
drew brees, if you are reading this i really think that peyton manning is a way better quarterback than you are personally. you didnt diserve to win the championship. you think your all good just because you won the championship.you suck
u knw what? u can never ever knw who's gonna win the Super Bowl. who ever thought the vikings were gonna go to the nfc title game with favre. who ever thought the saints were gonna win the super bowl, who ever thought the jets ( a team that finished 9-7 and barely made it to the playoffs) would go to the afc title game and lead at half time? all i knw is everyone has a chance at the super bowl. from the vikings and colts and packers to the rams and chiefs.
I imagine in high school, Drew would be one of those guys where the girls all say "omg, he's so cute!" And i'd be like "wtf, what does he have that I don't have?"
@jairus I don't think he's cute. I see him as one of those guys who always got girls because he was the QB of the football team not because he's cute or anything
@lonski10 he held a brand new football right before brees arrived and the cause it was a brand new ball a little of the color transferred to his hands
Before the superbowl, it was manning manning manning! Now the the saints won the superbowl and Drew Brees outplayed peyton manninh..its still manning manning manning. How the hell is peyton manning still the top dog? its bull shit
@Hondaftw1 BEcause he won the superbowl? So i guess eli was better than brady in 2007? I think most ppl still believe peyton is better. But the real question is, is brees better than brady? Might just be.
@TheSlothook Because he had better stats as well. More TD's, less INT's, and a much better QB rating. And Brady is still the top QB in the league. Manning chokes too much in the playoffs.
@Hondaftw1 Fair pt, although consider it this way. THis was just 1 year brees happened to have better stats. Do we simply ignore the other years. And also, if brady is better because he doesn't choke, how do you explain the game against the ravens? And btw, brady has had some bad playoff games-the diff? his teams were always good enough to win anyways(see the charger afc champ game, denver divisional game, titans divisional game).
@TheSlothook I wouldn't call that a choke necessarily by Brady. Not much was expected of the Patriots last season going into the playoffs. Manning is labeled a choker because he always finishes with the best record overall and they always lose in the playoffs. Manning is one of the most successful QB's ever, and only has one ring to show for it.
@Hondaftw1@Hondaftw1 Um...they were favored to win that game at home? And btw, how much talent do the colts really have? Outside of freeney and mathis, who on their D is really that good? Most talent evaluators and trusted scouts have long believed that manning inflates the entire team around him.
@TheSlothook The Colts defense has always been in the middle of the pack. Not great, but not that bad either. Offensively they have been loaded for quite some time. The Colts almost always draft offensive players. Manning has had plenty of weapons offensively to make his job a lot easier.
@Hondaftw1 Btw, you COULD say that manning has wayne and if he didn't where wud he be, but ppl said that about manning with harrison and yet nothing has changed. Honestly, that team isn't really that talented at all imo-compared to the old pats, cowboys, steelers, and ravens. As for brees--ill ask you this. how much credit do you give brees vs sean payton for coming up with brilliant offensive designs? They both should get credit but both help each other, but who exactly does manning have?
@TheSlothook Wayne and Harrison are both former 1st Round selections, so the talent is there. Offensively the Colts are as talented as they come. And Payton's schemes are amazing, but it's Brees who's throwing the ball. And Manning had Dungy one of the greatest coaches of all-time, not to mention Caldwell.
@Hondaftw1@Hondaftw1 So what if they are former first rounders. AGAIN, being a first rounder doesn't all imply that you are a great or even a good player. And your seriously going to say dungy is one of the greatest coaches? WHY? WHy does dungy get called great but not manning? And your also throwing in CAldwell? WHat has he done to show you he is a great coach?
@Hondaftw1 ALso, according to profootballfocus which maps the entire league and does advanced stats, the saints had the most offensive talent of anyone in the league. They ran 4 wideouts deep, good receiving tight tight end, the third best o line with the best guard tandem. Yes brees was apart of it but their was such a staggering diff in talent between the colts and saints. Check out the site.
@TheSlothook Btw, and this is more how to properly judge the nfl. You really can't go by rings or just a string of games-winning a superbowl has a ton of luck to it. Hell, the saints got lucky that the vikings had such a meltdown;otherwise they did outplay the saints. What about the chargers also? 3 missed fgs and they get derailed. I judge more by year to year consistency than anything> And peyton has been the most consistent qb of anyone this decade.
@TheSlothook In the NFL, QB's are judged by rings. That's why Terry Bradshaw is considered a better QB then Marino. Manning is consistent except when the game is on the line. Just like Favre, he doesn't raise his game when it counts. Brees hasn't been to the playoffs often, but he raised his game when it counted. His QB rating in the playoffs is 16 points higher then Manning's. Brees and Manning have 1 ring each, let's see who wins more.
@Hondaftw1 SO if rings were our definition-then eli is better than rivers, big ben is better than manning, brees, AND FAVRE. And trent dilfer(a career backup) now leapfrogs marino, Kosar, Foust, Moon, and Jim kelly. I know you don't believe that but hell, that is your argument. Tom brady won 3 superbowls, but in his best year, he lost the superbowl. Does that mean the 01 brady was better than the 07 brady? And was he better than this years brady who got throttled in the wildcard round at home?
@TheSlothook By the end of their career QB's are defined by their rings. It's the difference between Marino and Montana. Legends are remembered by their rings and postseason performances. There is a reason why such legends as Fouts, Tarkenton, Kelly, and Moon are almost forgotten in the conversation. Success will always be measured by rings, not stats.
@Hondaftw1 Take the jets v san diego. San diego lost by 3 but they missed 3 fgs. Now if you assume they go 2/3 or even 3/3 the game is tied or outright won by the chargers. Also rivers int got returned to the sd 1 yard line. if that ball doesn't get returned that far, the jets prlly don't score a td and prlly again lose. So thats a game that came down to luck. Now lets examine the Saints vikes. Do you realize the saints got 5 turnover that game? 3 off of fumbles?
@TheSlothook Yeah, that all works out great when played out in your head. Changing a single missed FG or turnover could dramatically change any game. You're assuming that if the Chargers made another FG, the Jets wouldn't have returned the Kickoff for a TD or the entire rest of the game wouldn't change. If you go by that perspective then what about a dropped pass in the end zone, or a penalty that keeps the chains moving. Luck favors both teams and is a part of the game.
@Hondaftw1 Assuming again the law of averages, you can't expect a team to recover 3 fumbles and those fumbles happened on drives in saints territory, again totally random and lucky. If the saints get even 1 less turnover than they got, they prlly again lose. Not too mention, the overtime they got a big kickoff return and penalties to help setup the fg. Brees btw had a pretty abysmal game but thankfully the turnovers saved him.
@TheSlothook It's not random, it's a game. You can't predict what could have happened. The only thing that can be proven is what really happened. The statement, "Could of, Should of, Would of" could apply to every single play. And Brees played a great game. He didn't throw for many yards, but he kept the chains moving and threw 3 TD's with minimal mistakes.
@Hondaftw1 And brees btw, didn't have a great game, you had to watch it to really understand. He threw 31 times for under 100 yards. He also was not woeful on 3rd down-25%, half the first downs has the vikes, half the total yards gained as the vikes, half the yards per play. IF you went by just tds then sure it looked great on the surface. Another example of why you can't blindly look at stats or rings. They never tell the whole story.
@TheSlothook I did watch the game. He didn't play outstanding, but he didn't make many mistakes either. And it wasn't under 100 yards, it was just under 200 yards. Any game where the QB doesn't turn the ball over is a good game. Brees controlled the game, and didn't make any mistakes that would cost them the game. Unlike Manning in the Superbowl.
@Hondaftw1 We simply see the game differently. What can i say? Ill say this, when you watch the league long enough, you always change your position on whats important and how to value certain things; at least I do. I want you to remember that1year from now, things can turn out very diff. I think brees is a great qb. I really do. And I'll leave it at that.
@TheSlothook Haha ok, sure. Don't try and act like you are more knowledgeable about football then me. Your opinion varies from mine, but I'm pretty sure it has nothing to do with a years time.
@Hondaftw1 there are plenty of other games in other postseasons that were entirely luck. Brady's tuck rule, the titans losing to the ravens off turnovers and a chris johnson injury, the pats in 07 barely beating the chargers when rivers, gates, and lt were all injured. The music city miracle, etc etc. And that list just includes the most obvious examples,. there are dozens of others that involved happening to get lucky matchups-ie the saints horrible run d not having to face the cowboys or jets
@TheSlothook The Saints played both the Cowboys and the Jets in the regular season. They beat the Jets 24-10, despite playing a poor game overall. They lost to the Cowboys in a poor outing by the offense. Luck is just a part of any game you play, and can't be used as any sort of excuse. Every single play can be reviewed and attributed to luck in some sort of way.
@Hondaftw1 Consider it like a game of poker between a pro and an average player. On one hand, the chance of luck is really big, but over a large number of hands, you can see a definite trend of the better player winning. That is exactly how it works in football but the problem is, one loss and your eliminated completely. The nature of luck is random and thus you can't say oh if so and so got lucky then its obvious luck will go the other way in the same game.
@Hondaftw1 Im going to finally conclude it like this. i think rings is a very poor way to measure an individuals performance and even a teams to some extent. Winning the sb doesn't mean you were the best team and there are plenty of examples to prove that. And just like that, because you won more rings can mean the team around you was great, not that you individually were the best. Brady won all his rings but hes a better qb now than he was
I disagree to a point being able to force a win in tough decision making times against a great team in high pressure games determines the great from simply talented. Montana especially in his first Two efforts definatly forced the issue and made it work to precision. Dilfer on the other hand had a great Defense and could have been a trained monkey..... you really have to take it team to team.
Manning vs Brees he didnt have the excuse of not having a great team, it was clutch vs clutch.
@Hondaftw1 As i mentioned earlier, that list of qbs that didn't win are still considered much better qbs that those who did win but aren't in the hall of fame. And btw, bradshaw isn't mentioned as one of the all time greats because ppl KNOW he had a great steeler d to ride to those superbowls and why roger staubach was considered a better qb even tho he lost to the steelers. Finally, if brady can lose a sb and still be considered great by you, than you should forgive too.
Sometimes that is true especially in the case of Aikman and Bradshaw who were utility QBs BUT in Montana and Brees's case they were/are the superior QB in that situation, I dont think Marino is better than Montana and I dont think Manning is better than Brees, they might have the same level of natural talent, arm strength, accuracy etc, but what sets the Truly great QB from the stock is they have Aikman or Bradshaw like decision skills AND a powerful, accurate arm.
@Faelsun And your reasoning that brees is somehow better than manning is what exactly? because he beat in the superbowl? Then my contention is that rothlisburger is better than warner and eli is better than brady, and phil simms was better than elway etc etc. Again, please try not to go by simply rings. It is a team game and also a bit of luck that really determines the winner. Again, see the example of brady this year vs 2001. 09 brady gets toasted by the ravens, 01 wins it all.
No I said it depends on the QB, his team and the situation, dont put words in my mouth to help your defense of Manning. Big Ben may indeed be better than Warner, on top of having a great defense I have seen Ben do some miracles of his own, he simply is not on a team that demands 30 yard passes every 3rd down and his drive against Arizona was fantastic. But neither one of them is what you think of when you think of Great QBs in my mind.
@Faelsun At least your allowing yourself to be subjective instead of looking so black and white on stats. But, since you recognize the diff between carrying a team and managing a team, let me ask you this. Do you believe the colts are a great team talent wise? In that I mean, how many of their players do you believe would be good on most teams? Take the patriots for example, you might argue logan mankins, tom brady, randy moss, and wes welker are all top flgiht players, but what about indy?
As an Offense the Colts are the sum of its parts a collection of above average the very good players, not unlike the patriots... at least before they got Moss. However what really Drives the Colts is its D, even when Manning has a bad day they bail him out and Quickly.... which is why he can throw the game away with 3 Int like he did with Denver last year and still get enough Second Chances to gun it down field for the Win.
Also Manning takes alot of risks and sometimes does not make sound decisions, tries to beat man coverage on fast zip passes alot...... and gets burned for it.... In my mind he is not greater a QB than Favre, ... not bad QBs .. GREAT Even..... But their not GODs Joe Montana... I mean I have seen Joe Cool Play, If its 3rd and 15 with 3:31 on the Clock He WILL get a TD..... not might get a TD.... its just going to happen. Those things matter just as much as season stats.
And last of all about the colts in my Personal opinion, their offensive Structure is oldschool, a lot of big meaty guys, lots of predictable plays.. as well as an old school Brick type Defense. And In my opinion systems like that usually have problems with more modern offensive Structure, better special teams play, you see a simple change in defensive formation gave Manning hell. Colts had an EASY schedule which probably inflated their heads a bit.
I dunno Manning puts up lots of yards but he also puts up lots of Interceptions Id say hes top 7 maybe even 5 in the league, But hes too much like Favre to be top two, I actually like a few QBs better than Manning. Personally Id want Big Ben running my team if I had the choice.
Brees is better than Manning simply on his regular season numbers he was robbed of two MVPs and everyone but the overzealous colts fan knows this, He PROVED the Point in the Superbowl, where as Manning could only beat Rex Grossman and the bears, Brees dominated the Colts... far different situations.
Phil Simms and Elway... are you serious? a utility QB with good decision making vs a highly talented gunarm QB with BAD decision making...... tough call.
@Hondaftw1 I hate to repeat myself, but you can throw names on the colts all day long but it doesn't make them good because you say so. Their o line has now had 2 repeat years as being a terrible run offensive line and also fairly mediocre at pass blocking. Garcon and collie are also names your dropping but consider that aside from collie, garcon also rated mediocre to poor. And for that matter, so did the vast majority of the colts defense. Their defense is the very much smoke and mirrors.
@TheSlothook The OL isn't that bad at run blocking, the Colts are just a pass oriented offense. Garcon played outstanding for his first season as a true starter. That includes setting the record for most receptions in the AFC Championship game. And I hate to repeat myself, but we're talking about Manning and the offense. The defense has nothing to do with that.
@TheSlothook There is no way the Saints had more offensive talent then the Chargers or the Vikings. Saints have average RB's, Colston, Shockey, and Meachem, and a very good OL. That can't compare to the Vikings with Peterson, Taylor, Schiancoe, Rice, Harvin, and Berrian. Or even the Chargers with LT, Sproles, Jackson, Floyd, and Gates. The Saints simply had the most effective offense because of Brees and the offensive scheme.
@Hondaftw1 Yes the vikes offensive was also very talented, but you are just looking at the highlight names. The saints ran 4 wideouts who were all good quality including another good receiving tight end and running back. The vikes may have had a better 1 receiver and rb, but they were not nearly as deep. And the saints o line was rated 3rd in the league. Ditto for the chargers who yes have great skill position talent but offensive line was a train wreck with injuries throughout the lineup.
@TheSlothook Any team can run a spread offense and put up huge stats. If you matched up the starting offenses, the Chargers and Vikings are more talented. The Vikings have a lot of depth at WR and RB. Rice, Harvin, and Berrian make up one of the most talented trio in the NFL. The same went for Peterson, Taylor, and Johnson. The only thing the Saints have more pure talent in is the OL.
@Hondaftw1 Im goin to step away from the brees v manning argument since we are at an impasse there. Firstly, no disrespect ever intended, this is just a fun respectful debate for me and i hope it is for you 2. With that said, if theres one thing I'd like to convince you of, its the impact of luck. I believe luck is a big determinant in who wins the superbowl and I will cite a few examples to prove that pt.
@Hondaftw1 ALso try to be reasonable. The colts talent is really not that great. Ok freeney is great, mathis is very good and maybe wayne but beyond that who else? Wayne? The offensive line has had turnover every year and yet the offense is still consistent. And btw, greg cossel-nfl films president has openly said, every talent evaluator on all 32 teams has widely ackowledged there is no player who does more than manning and has a bigger impact on a teams win or loss. This is WIDELY ACCEPted.
@TheSlothook Again, Manning has nothing to do with the defense. Offensively they have Addai and Brown in the backfield, and Garcon, Collie, Gonzalez, Wayne, and Clark as receivers. 5 of those players are former 1st round selections. The Colt's OL isn't nearly as dominant as it used to be, but they still have Saturday and Diem. It's obvious that Manning is the most valuable player to that team. But that means he also takes the blame for losing in the playoffs too.
@Hondaftw1 Maintaining ball control and being high percentage is the definition of protecting a defense. COnsider the concept of what the cover 2 really is? its a defense designed to play with the lead so they can ignore run responsibilities. It is also highly susceptible to the run and any team that can basically control the clock on them. Very much a defense built to play with the lead and have an offense protect it.

see people how little just a win in the sb means? drew brees has now b een subpar for over 5 games...just because u win the sb doenst mean you;re a great qb. Would manning ever lose to the cardinals with max hall at qb? Or tom brady? seriously, trent dilfer won a sb so its not exactly the proof you need for a great qb
TheSlothook 1 year ago
@TheSlothook how bout you check the stats before you make a fool out of yourself. brees is in the top five in every major statistical category for qbs right now. you can stfu now. the brees has nothing to do with the saints problems.
dRUnkHIGHLANDERS 1 year ago
@dRUnkHIGHLANDERS You're half right. hes too great a qb to be subpar technically, but he has been subpar by elite qb standards. His team is averaging 19pts a game and the truth is though, hes faced some subpar competition...the panthers at home who are winless...22 pts on the niners with all those turnovers...the loss to the cardinals wasn't all his fault but even greg cosell who does the nfl matchup show has said hes played poorly overall by his standards
TheSlothook 1 year ago
@TheSlothook by half right, you mean all right, right? they are a missed chip shot field goal from being 4-1 right now. what the problem is?
dRUnkHIGHLANDERS 1 year ago
@dRUnkHIGHLANDERS and if the niners didnt turn the ball over 5 times on fluky plays they should've won. THey also barely beat the winless panthers at home against jimmie clausen and they lost to the cardinals with max hall at qb? the same cardinals that got destroyed by the falcons and chargers. I have seen all the saints games, brees isn't playing as well as i am used to seeing... and even the scouts agree with me btw.
TheSlothook 1 year ago
@TheSlothook Man dude this is the NFL,everyone is a good team.you cant say because they lost to this team, who this team beat. it doesnt work like that,he's missing the spread of the field from reggie bush and pierre thomas. But look how he played vs pitts,he knows when he needs to make the big play

@Hondaftw1 BEcause he won the superbowl? So i guess eli was better than brady in 2007? I think most ppl still believe peyton is better. But the real question is, is brees better than brady? Might just be.
TheSlothook 1 year ago
@TheSlothook Because he had better stats as well. More TD's, less INT's, and a much better QB rating. And Brady is still the top QB in the league. Manning chokes too much in the playoffs.
Hondaftw1 1 year ago
@Hondaftw1 Fair pt, although consider it this way. THis was just 1 year brees happened to have better stats. Do we simply ignore the other years. And also, if brady is better because he doesn't choke, how do you explain the game against the ravens? And btw, brady has had some bad playoff games-the diff? his teams were always good enough to win anyways(see the charger afc champ game, denver divisional game, titans divisional game).
TheSlothook 1 year ago
@TheSlothook I wouldn't call that a choke necessarily by Brady. Not much was expected of the Patriots last season going into the playoffs. Manning is labeled a choker because he always finishes with the best record overall and they always lose in the playoffs. Manning is one of the most successful QB's ever, and only has one ring to show for it.
Hondaftw1 1 year ago
@Hondaftw1 @Hondaftw1 Um...they were favored to win that game at home? And btw, how much talent do the colts really have? Outside of freeney and mathis, who on their D is really that good? Most talent evaluators and trusted scouts have long believed that manning inflates the entire team around him.
TheSlothook 1 year ago
@TheSlothook The Colts defense has always been in the middle of the pack. Not great, but not that bad either. Offensively they have been loaded for quite some time. The Colts almost always draft offensive players. Manning has had plenty of weapons offensively to make his job a lot easier.
Hondaftw1 1 year ago
@Hondaftw1 Btw, you COULD say that manning has wayne and if he didn't where wud he be, but ppl said that about manning with harrison and yet nothing has changed. Honestly, that team isn't really that talented at all imo-compared to the old pats, cowboys, steelers, and ravens. As for brees--ill ask you this. how much credit do you give brees vs sean payton for coming up with brilliant offensive designs? They both should get credit but both help each other, but who exactly does manning have?
TheSlothook 1 year ago
@TheSlothook Wayne and Harrison are both former 1st Round selections, so the talent is there. Offensively the Colts are as talented as they come. And Payton's schemes are amazing, but it's Brees who's throwing the ball. And Manning had Dungy one of the greatest coaches of all-time, not to mention Caldwell.
Hondaftw1 1 year ago
@Hondaftw1 @Hondaftw1 So what if they are former first rounders.
TheSlothook 1 year ago
@Hondaftw1 ALso, according to profootballfocus which maps the entire league and does advanced stats, the saints had the most offensive talent of anyone in the league. They ran 4 wideouts deep, good receiving tight tight end, the third best o line with the best guard tandem. Yes brees was apart of it but their was such a staggering diff in talent between the colts and saints. Check out the site.
TheSlothook 1 year ago
@TheSlothook Btw, and this is more how to properly judge the nfl. You really can't go by rings or just a string of games-winning a superbowl has a ton of luck to it. Hell, the saints got lucky that the vikings had such a meltdown;otherwise they did outplay the saints. What about the chargers also? 3 missed fgs and they get derailed. I judge more by year to year consistency than anything> And peyton has been the most consistent qb of anyone this decade.
TheSlothook 1 year ago
@TheSlothook In the NFL, QB's are judged by rings. That's why Terry Bradshaw is considered a better QB then Marino. Manning is consistent except when the game is on the line. Just like Favre, he doesn't raise his game when it counts. Brees hasn't been to the playoffs often, but he raised his game when it counted. His QB rating in the playoffs is 16 points higher then Manning's. Brees and Manning have 1 ring each, let's see who wins more.
Hondaftw1 1 year ago
@Hondaftw1 SO if rings were our definition-then eli is better than rivers, big ben is better than manning, brees, AND FAVRE. And trent dilfer(a career backup) now leapfrogs marino, Kosar, Foust, Moon, and Jim kelly. I know you don't believe that but hell, that is your argument. Tom brady won 3 superbowls, but in his best year, he lost the superbowl. Does that mean the 01 brady was better than the 07 brady? And was he better than this years brady who got throttled in the wildcard round at home?
TheSlothook 1 year ago
@TheSlothook By the end of their career QB's are defined by their rings. It's the difference between Marino and Montana. Legends are remembered by their rings and postseason performances. There is a reason why such legends as Fouts, Tarkenton, Kelly, and Moon are almost forgotten in the conversation. Success will always be measured by rings, not stats.
Hondaftw1 1 year ago
@Hondaftw1 Take the jets v san diego. San diego lost by 3 but they missed 3 fgs. Now if you assume they go 2/3 or even 3/3 the game is tied or outright won by the chargers. Also rivers int got returned to the sd 1 yard line. if that ball doesn't get returned that far, the jets prlly don't score a td and prlly again lose. So thats a game that came down to luck. Now lets examine the Saints vikes. Do you realize the saints got 5 turnover that game? 3 off of fumbles?
TheSlothook 1 year ago
@TheSlothook Yeah, that all works out great when played out in your head. Changing a single missed FG or turnover could dramatically change any game. You're assuming that if the Chargers made another FG, the Jets wouldn't have returned the Kickoff for a TD or the entire rest of the game wouldn't change. If you go by that perspective then what about a dropped pass in the end zone, or a penalty that keeps the chains moving. Luck favors both teams and is a part of the game.
Hondaftw1 1 year ago
@Hondaftw1 Assuming again the law of averages, you can't expect a team to recover 3 fumbles and those fumbles happened on drives in saints territory, again totally random and lucky. If the saints get even 1 less turnover than they got, they prlly again lose. Not too mention, the overtime they got a big kickoff return and penalties to help setup the fg. Brees btw had a pretty abysmal game but thankfully the turnovers saved him.
TheSlothook 1 year ago
@TheSlothook It's not random, it's a game. You can't predict what could have happened. The only thing that can be proven is what really happened. The statement, "Could of, Should of, Would of" could apply to every single play. And Brees played a great game. He didn't throw for many yards, but he kept the chains moving and threw 3 TD's with minimal mistakes.
Hondaftw1 1 year ago
@Hondaftw1 And brees btw, didn't have a great game, you had to watch it to really understand. He threw 31 times for under 100 yards. He also was not woeful on 3rd down-25%, half the first downs has the vikes, half the total yards gained as the vikes, half the yards per play. IF you went by just tds then sure it looked great on the surface. Another example of why you can't blindly look at stats or rings. They never tell the whole story.
TheSlothook 1 year ago
@TheSlothook I did watch the game. He didn't play outstanding, but he didn't make many mistakes either. And it wasn't under 100 yards, it was just under 200 yards. Any game where the QB doesn't turn the ball over is a good game. Brees controlled the game, and didn't make any mistakes that would cost them the game. Unlike Manning in the Superbowl.
Hondaftw1 1 year ago
@Hondaftw1 We simply see the game differently. What can i say? Ill say this, when you watch the league long enough, you always change your position on whats important and how to value certain things; at least I do. I want you to remember that1year from now, things can turn out very diff. I think brees is a great qb. I really do. And I'll leave it at that.
TheSlothook 1 year ago
@TheSlothook Haha ok, sure. Don't try and act like you are more knowledgeable about football then me. Your opinion varies from mine, but I'm pretty sure it has nothing to do with a years time.
Hondaftw1 1 year ago
@Hondaftw1 there are plenty of other games in other postseasons that were entirely luck. Brady's tuck rule, the titans losing to the ravens off turnovers and a chris johnson injury, the pats in 07 barely beating the chargers when rivers, gates, and lt were all injured. The music city miracle, etc etc. And that list just includes the most obvious examples,. there are dozens of others that involved happening to get lucky matchups-ie the saints horrible run d not having to face the cowboys or jets
TheSlothook 1 year ago
@TheSlothook The Saints played both the Cowboys and the Jets in the regular season. They beat the Jets 24-10, despite playing a poor game overall. They lost to the Cowboys in a poor outing by the offense. Luck is just a part of any game you play, and can't be used as any sort of excuse. Every single play can be reviewed and attributed to luck in some sort of way.
Hondaftw1 1 year ago
@Hondaftw1 Consider it like a game of poker between a pro and an average player. On one hand, the chance of luck is really big, but over a large number of hands, you can see a definite trend of the better player winning. That is exactly how it works in football but the problem is, one loss and your eliminated completely. The nature of luck is random and thus you can't say oh if so and so got lucky then its obvious luck will go the other way in the same game.
TheSlothook 1 year ago
@Hondaftw1 Im going to finally conclude it like this. i think rings is a very poor way to measure an individuals performance and even a teams to some extent. Winning the sb doesn't mean you were the best team and there are plenty of examples to prove that. And just like that, because you won more rings can mean the team around you was great, not that you individually were the best. Brady won all his rings but hes a better qb now than he was
TheSlothook 1 year ago
I disagree to a point being able to force a win in tough decision making times against a great team in high pressure games determines the great from simply talented. Montana especially in his first Two efforts definatly forced the issue and made it work to precision. Dilfer on the other hand had a great Defense and could have been a trained monkey..... you really have to take it team to team.
Manning vs Brees he didnt have the excuse of not having a great team, it was clutch vs clutch.
Faelsun 1 year ago
@Hondaftw1 As i mentioned earlier, that list of qbs that didn't win are still considered much better qbs that those who did win but aren't in the hall of fame. And btw, bradshaw isn't mentioned as one of the all time greats because ppl KNOW he had a great steeler d to ride to those superbowls and why roger staubach was considered a better qb even tho he lost to the steelers. Finally, if brady can lose a sb and still be considered great by you, than you should forgive too.
TheSlothook 1 year ago
Sometimes that is true especially in the case of Aikman and Bradshaw who were utility QBs BUT in Montana and Brees's case they were/are the superior QB in that situation, I dont think Marino is better than Montana and I dont think Manning is better than Brees, they might have the same level of natural talent, arm strength, accuracy etc, but what sets the Truly great QB from the stock is they have Aikman or Bradshaw like decision skills AND a powerful, accurate arm.
Faelsun 1 year ago
@Faelsun And your reasoning that brees is somehow better than manning is what exactly? because he beat in the superbowl? Then my contention is that rothlisburger is better than warner and eli is better than brady, and phil simms was better than elway etc etc. Again, please try not to go by simply rings. It is a team game and also a bit of luck that really determines the winner. Again, see the example of brady this year vs 2001. 09 brady gets toasted by the ravens, 01 wins it all.
TheSlothook 1 year ago
No I said it depends on the QB, his team and the situation, dont put words in my mouth to help your defense of Manning. Big Ben may indeed be better than Warner, on top of having a great defense I have seen Ben do some miracles of his own, he simply is not on a team that demands 30 yard passes every 3rd down and his drive against Arizona was fantastic. But neither one of them is what you think of when you think of Great QBs in my mind.
Faelsun 1 year ago
@Faelsun At least your allowing yourself to be subjective instead of looking so black and white on stats. But, since you recognize the diff between carrying a team and managing a team, let me ask you this. Do you believe the colts are a great team talent wise? In that I mean, how many of their players do you believe would be good on most teams? Take the patriots for example, you might argue logan mankins, tom brady, randy moss, and wes welker are all top flgiht players, but what about indy?
TheSlothook 1 year ago
As an Offense the Colts are the sum of its parts a collection of above average the very good players, not unlike the patriots... at least before they got Moss. However what really Drives the Colts is its D, even when Manning has a bad day they bail him out and Quickly.... which is why he can throw the game away with 3 Int like he did with Denver last year and still get enough Second Chances to gun it down field for the Win.
Faelsun 1 year ago
Also Manning takes alot of risks and sometimes does not make sound decisions, tries to beat man coverage on fast zip passes alot...... and gets burned for it.... In my mind he is not greater a QB than Favre, ... not bad QBs .. GREAT Even..... But their not GODs Joe Montana... I mean I have seen Joe Cool Play, If its 3rd and 15 with 3:31 on the Clock He WILL get a TD..... not might get a TD.... its just going to happen. Those things matter just as much as season stats.
Faelsun 1 year ago
And last of all about the colts in my Personal opinion, their offensive Structure is oldschool, a lot of big meaty guys, lots of predictable plays.. as well as an old school Brick type Defense. And In my opinion systems like that usually have problems with more modern offensive Structure, better special teams play, you see a simple change in defensive formation gave Manning hell. Colts had an EASY schedule which probably inflated their heads a bit.
Faelsun 1 year ago
@Faelsun Manning and Brees are the two best QBs in the league. Colts got outcoached tho. Sean Payton's a genius.
PrUnEJuIcEtHeThIrD 1 year ago
I dunno Manning puts up lots of yards but he also puts up lots of Interceptions Id say hes top 7 maybe even 5 in the league, But hes too much like Favre to be top two, I actually like a few QBs better than Manning. Personally Id want Big Ben running my team if I had the choice.

dankebuddha 1 year ago
Brees is better than Manning simply on his regular season numbers he was robbed of two MVPs and everyone but the overzealous colts fan knows this, He PROVED the Point in the Superbowl, where as Manning could only beat Rex Grossman and the bears, Brees dominated the Colts... far different situations.
Phil Simms and Elway... are you serious? a utility QB with good decision making vs a highly talented gunarm QB with BAD decision making...... tough call.
Faelsun 1 year ago
@Hondaftw1 I hate to repeat myself, but you can throw names on the colts all day long but it doesn't make them good because you say so. Their o line has now had 2 repeat years as being a terrible run offensive line and also fairly mediocre at pass blocking. Garcon and collie are also names your dropping but consider that aside from collie, garcon also rated mediocre to poor. And for that matter, so did the vast majority of the colts defense. Their defense is the very much smoke and mirrors.
TheSlothook 1 year ago
@TheSlothook The OL isn't that bad at run blocking, the Colts are just a pass oriented offense. Garcon played outstanding for his first season as a true starter. That includes setting the record for most receptions in the AFC Championship game. And I hate to repeat myself, but we're talking about Manning and the offense. The defense has nothing to do with that.
Hondaftw1 1 year ago
@TheSlothook There is no way the Saints had more offensive talent then the Chargers or the Vikings. Saints have average RB's, Colston, Shockey, and Meachem, and a very good OL. That can't compare to the Vikings with Peterson, Taylor, Schiancoe, Rice, Harvin, and Berrian. Or even the Chargers with LT, Sproles, Jackson, Floyd, and Gates. The Saints simply had the most effective offense because of Brees and the offensive scheme.
Hondaftw1 1 year ago
@Hondaftw1 Yes the vikes offensive was also very talented, but you are just looking at the highlight names. The saints ran 4 wideouts who were all good quality including another good receiving tight end and running back. The vikes may have had a better 1 receiver and rb, but they were not nearly as deep. And the saints o line was rated 3rd in the league. Ditto for the chargers who yes have great skill position talent but offensive line was a train wreck with injuries throughout the lineup.
TheSlothook 1 year ago
@TheSlothook Any team can run a spread offense and put up huge stats. If you matched up the starting offenses, the Chargers and Vikings are more talented. The Vikings have a lot of depth at WR and RB. Rice, Harvin, and Berrian make up one of the most talented trio in the NFL. The same went for Peterson, Taylor, and Johnson. The only thing the Saints have more pure talent in is the OL.
Hondaftw1 1 year ago
@Hondaftw1 Im goin to step away from the brees v manning argument since we are at an impasse there. Firstly, no disrespect ever intended, this is just a fun respectful debate for me and i hope it is for you 2. With that said, if theres one thing I'd like to convince you of, its the impact of luck. I believe luck is a big determinant in who wins the superbowl and I will cite a few examples to prove that pt.
TheSlothook 1 year ago
