Aldous Leonard Huxley’s last day on Earth was November 22, 1963—the day of John F. Kennedy’s assassination. (C.S. Lewis also died that day.) During Huxley’s last hours, at his home in Hollywood, California, he was unable to speak. According to his wife, Laura, in her memoir, This Timeless Moment, he wrote her a note requesting, “LSD, 100 µg, intramuscular.” She duly gave him an injection at 11:45 a.m., and another a couple of hours later.
Oh Imladris...Long have I wanted to rest in thee...Hear the tales of Arda and the great feats of Men, Dwarfs, Elves, and Hobbits...Listen to the water's ever flowing loud hushed voice...My body may be here, but my soul is forever willingly trapped in Middle-Earth. Thank you Rush. Thank you for this song....
@bobmarleyisgod1 well, you can debate what makes a good song. again, it's all subjective. Arrangement, lyrics, tonality, vocals, playing dynamics, chord voicings, even the production of the piece, all go in to determining the final product. When I speak of Rush's 'complexity', I'm speaking of all of those elements. Not just virtuoso playing or odd time signatures that are difficult to tap your foot to. So, for me, yes, it is their complexity that contributes to the 'feeling'.
@bobmarleyisgod1 I didn't say that just because a piece of music is complex that it's good. But, if you're trying to determine which piece of good music is better, then the more complex, in my opinion, would win out. Bands like Rush (and, others) are able to compose thoughtful, emotive pieces and still incorporate challenging, complex elements into their writing. So, for me, because of that, Rush is far superior to bands like AC/DC. Doesn't mean I won't jam to 'Hell's Bells', though.
@bobmarleyisgod1 sure you can. the complexity is what makes it better. art is all subjective, anyway, but if you're ranking something, you have to have criteria. all things being equal, the more complex, the better. But that's not to say a more simplistic approach sucks. In the words of Neil Peart, "Less is, well.......less."
My 21 year old son cries when he hears this because it is to be the last song played at my funeral. I am going to my Rivendell, it may not be your heaven, but it's mine. This song has had meaning for me for nearly 35 years.
@santanaincubus which is my ongoing joke that Geddy Lee (even though its gary weinrib-jewish) couldn't sound anymore English and the ongoing inside joke "They're pretty good but what's the ugly british chicks name who sings?" Seems it took off because i see others joining in now. Even geddy said he is said to look between Bono and a British old hag. :|
This tune has always meant so much to me. As macabre as it may sound, I play it for those who I knew in life who passed away...usually as soon as I can get to the ipod, etc after I'm told. It helps ground me and allows me to reflect on the awesomeness of this world...and the next. (If you can't tell, I'm typing this because someone I knew died today and I wound up here...RIP Gail)
@bobmarleyisgod1 What I'm not allowed to prefer more complex music? I personally find the music of AC/DC very boring, but then again it's not solely because they are simple but because I don't feel their songs are very well written or interesting or even fun for that matter. I personally prefer more involved music but like simple things as well just not AC/DC. How does that make me immature?
All i gotta say is ... you can't listen to proper jive, like this over the radio.it is all commercialised bollocks these days. seen them moving pictures/exitstage left tour many moons ago. nowt has ever come close
Rush may be better than ACDC, but ACDC is NOT commercial. ACDC is popular, but they never became a hair band, grunge, or death metal. ACDC stayed true to themselves. It's true ACDC's lyrics lack meaning, but to be honest, I can't make out the lyrics in ACDC's or Rush's songs so whatever. The Beatles are good, but I like Rush better because their style of rock is harder and more instrument-oriented(at least in their 70s prime).
the Beatles were great. that said, Rush is my favorite. Neil's lyrics and the incomparable musicianship of the band set them above even Pink Floyd. I'm hoping that virtual reality and the Singularity bring us to Rivendell. I want to kill Orcs as well, but only because they're bumming my trip!!
I remember listening to this song when I was a child and had trouble getting to sleep, and I used to sing it to my nieces and nephews too when they were babies .
Also, it was mostly the early Beatles songs that were simple......however, has anyone actually tried playing I Feel Fine on guitar? That's actually surprisingly hard. A lot of it's a continious fast stream of chords.
I wish they can play this song live on their upcoming second leg of the Time Machine Tour. These guys have so many hidden gems in their discography, with this being a big one in my opinion.
Why argue over bands in the presence of such beauty as this? Rather than argue over music, enjoy what your listening to and what it has to offer, such as this amazing work of art.
This song is so beautiful... Reminds me of when I go vacationing in Maine every year, where the 'dark lord' cannot go. I wonder if that's where they were going with this. Probably.
@nickslespaul I do play guitar and I can tell you firsthand that Angus isn't that amazing. Not particularly bad but he's sloppy, sticks to one scale, rather straightforward and unoriginal, but what I will say is he plays with a lot of energy and it comes through in his playing though I will say he's not that appealing to me.
@nickslespaul ME ac dc sucks they play the same shit but rush man....if i didnt <3 rush idk what i would to with my life rush is so epic that babies get born from hearing this epic power trio of amazing musicions and ac dc is just a nbunch of old guys singing and play a riff that a small gorrila fetus can easily play live alpongside them and rush is epic
i know rush is hugely infulenced by alot of english rock bands as are alot of north amercian bands in the 70`s are, does anyone think that this song sounds like a beatles tune!
I really like this softer song by Rush. Its different. The only slower songs Ive heard from Rush are Rivendell and Tears from 2112, and I love them both
I have to say this, not noticing the comments earlier. If anyone is trying to even hint that the Beatles were simple...I guess I'm speaking to the young people, who might sometime, see these comments. Beatles simple? What a bunch of clueless...there are no words!
@radioheadkids2 I know, my stupid bus had a "vote" to see who liked The Beatles, guess who was the only one raising their hand? lol What's dumb is that i know for a fact none of them can name 1 member, 1 song, or have listened to any of their stuff. I hate my generation sometimes.
this is so cool since i love rush and the lord of the rings.plus rush stands alone to me they are the best band i ever heard. like the guy commented they are so smart.guess thats why you dont see many covers that even hold a candle to them.hell its hard to recreate this kind of magic ,peace
the beatles were all about free love and good trips....gosh strawberry fields and lucy in the sky with diamonds just to name a few said they were trippin on something or related to drugs but rush was after that scene i'm sure they tooted the weeds but the songs are clearly mystical and written poeticle enough to be clssified in their own cattigory
ACDC is a commercial band, they play the same thing over and over again because it works (they sell out). The Beatles are good, but a bit different than Rush. Their lyrics seem to lack in meaning. Of course, not all, but their songs are simple. Rush's songs are complicated and smart. Like I said, the Beatles are good, but not the best.
Listen to the later Beatles work, in particular the White Album, Abbey Road and Let it Be. The songs there have lots of underlying meaning, granted though that their songs are not as complicated and poetic as Rush's songs. I like the Beatles in that they have a huge variety of work. Their early stuff is more popular, while their later stuff is more progressive, hard rock, but still popular. But yeah, obviously they are not the same, the Beatles also helped transform rock music in the 60s.
That's true. I think I only dislike the Beetle's more because everyone likes them only because everyone else does. Not having a mind bugs me more than anything.
@DerryC69 No Beatles, there'd be no Rush. Beatles, though influenced by black music that preceeded them, lay the blueprints and foundations for all rock music. Therefore, The Beatles were great.
@bassmonkey1962 Do you know for a fact that there would be no Rush if there were no Beatles? Rush is a progressive band, they would have been there regardless. The Beatles were an awesome band, but their lyrics were not as inventive or sophisticated as Rush's were/is. They have some songs that are really good though. To each their own I guess.
@DerryC69 AC/DC is the best rock n roll band ever. Rush may be the greatest progressive rock band the world has ever seen. But for just pure, simple, bluesy, in your face rock and roll, AC/DC is second to no one. So they play the same riffs over and over, can anybody makes them rock like AC/DC? I think not. Let's see Geddy Lee die and then the band come out with their biggest album ever that same year with a different singer...
@DerryC69 Rush is definitely a great band, but wow.. no they are not close to as innovative and talented as the bands you mention .. You need to widen your horizon. There are loads of 'deep' and thoughtful musicians out there - if that's what you're seeking. Rush is one of them. But don't misunderstand this, Rush is very good. P.S. What are you talking about, when you say that AC/DC play the same thing over and over again? You're dead wrong. They play loud music, not stereotypical music.
@AlbinoPolarBears They are way more innovative and talented than AC/DC, but the Beatles are different. The Beatles would have the same talent, but a bit less creativity, however, their creativity still beats many bands out there, especially for today's bands. The Beatles sang about love in many of their songs, so there was one main, common theme.
Listen to their music, their beats are the same. I am sure they would admit to it. They play loud music with the same beat.
@DerryC69 This is a dumb argument on it's own, The Beatles are amazing, yes they were simple at the beginning but The White Album ect. was amazing and deep, ACDC can sometimes be very commercial but they were great when Bon Scott was the front man, and Rush is The Holy Trinity they are amazing, they never competed or argued with each other, so why are all of you?
@TheMultiMystery just knocked the head on the nail dude why dont fellow fans stick together and talk about the good times man insted of sayin whos better beatles rock in they own way.. i mean the long and winding road blastin on a country lane xD ? now thats awsome
@DerryC69 You are right. The Beatles have good musical compositions. The problem is that many of their songs have lyrics that you can listen in Jonas Brothers songs. According to my opinion, a good rock must have a good musical composition and also a reflexive and deep lyric.
@DerryC69 that's the point! without being that complex, the Beatles made also great music! Music is not to be the harder it can to be good. And you just CAN'T compare the Rush and the Beatles.
@DerryC69 Ever heard of Floating Fourths? Its a technique in music that the Beatles INVENTED, and it was something even Beethoven couldn't come up with. Don't get me wrong, I'm a bigger RUSH fan than anything else, and I'm not a big Beatles fan. But they had complex shit going too...
@DerryC69 Sorry but you just said something extremely misguided. Sure Rush are complicated and they do a good job at it; but complicated isn't always better than simple, and it's niave to think that way. Does being simple make Times They Are A Changin' any less of a masterpiece? One of my favorite Neil Young songs, Borrowed Tune is one simple verse repeated. Also, not all the Beatles songs "lack in meaning". Yesterday and Help may be some of the most meaningful songs ever to me.
@MetroidFan621 I was just talking about AC/DC, not Neil Young. Also, complicated does not mean better, look at Dream Theatre. All I am saying, and this is just MY opinion, Rush has better lyrics and musical talent then a lot of the bands, namely AC/DC in this instance. People all have different tastes, and I was just showing my different opinion.
@DerryC69 Ddue, agreed Rush is much classier, but AC/DC were good hard rock, and fun to hear. Ofcourse not close to what Rush or Floyd or Zeppelin are, but definitely not sell outs man.
You are a fucking retard. I love Rush, but your comment was pathetic and ignorant. You clearly haven't listened to the Beatles. I love Rush, but the lyrics (in their earlier albums anyway) are generally entertaining rather than a band like the Beatles or Tool which are ment to be pondered.
The Beatles wrote more good songs than ANY other band. They are clearly the most consistent band of all time. Rush is up their with Zeppelin, and the Beatles and Blink-182.
@Carthsgtr don't even put blink 182 in the same category as rush, zeppelin, and the beatles. blink 182 doesn't have anything really special to offer(as far as i've listened to them). The beatles have good music in general but also great song writing for their time. Rush has great instrumentation and great lyrics as well. zeppelin had great instrumentation and had more impact than rush. blink 182 isn't bad but it reminds me of springsteen who writes good stuff but its nothing special
@DerryC69 beatles have pretty complicated songs, especially for coming out of the era of elvis. not as complicated as rush, but still good for their time, a day in the life is pretty complex, as well as the abbey road medley. they are two different to compare. beatles also had great meaning in their songs julia, let it be, and revolution. if you are judging by how complicated the music is rush would beat the beatles, but king crimson would beat rush. i give the three of them a tie for first
@happyface4444 and @Carthsgtr I agree with @DerryC69 The Beatles are my favorite band but they really only started getting DEEP in the late 60's in the earlier 60's it was "I want to hold your hand" and "She Loves You" Rush's first hit Working man was 100% thought provoking. I believe Tool and The Beatles (maybe not blink 182 kinda weak to put with the prior) are defiantly GREAT bands but I'm gonna give this round to Rush
@juansemillon WHAT? How are the Beatles the best? They played the same stuff over and over, and Paul McCartney couldn't write lyrics worth a damn, but his tunes were catchy. John Lennon wrote well, but his music was mediocre at best.
I'm glad someone pointed out that the lyrics are based on Tolkein. A Rush fan or a Tolkein fan? Either way, welcome to the world fella!(coz let's be honest, they're not gonna be female!)

i know rush is hugely infulenced by alot of english rock bands as are alot of north amercian bands in the 70`s are, does anyone think that this song sounds like a beatles tune!

I really like this softer song by Rush. Its different. The only slower songs Ive heard from Rush are Rivendell and Tears from 2112, and I love them both

You feel there's something calling you
You're wanting to return
To where the misty mountains rise and friendly fires burn
A place you can escape the world
Where the dark lord cannot go
Peace of mind and sanctuary by loud water's flow

I have to say this, not noticing the comments earlier. If anyone is trying to even hint that the Beatles were simple...I guess I'm speaking to the young people, who might sometime, see these comments. Beatles simple? What a bunch of clueless...there are no words!

@radioheadkids2 I know, my stupid bus had a "vote" to see who liked The Beatles, guess who was the only one raising their hand? lol What's dumb is that i know for a fact none of them can name 1 member, 1 song, or have listened to any of their stuff. I hate my generation sometimes.

the beatles were all about free love and good trips....gosh strawberry fields and lucy in the sky with diamonds just to name a few said they were trippin on something or related to drugs but rush was after that scene i'm sure they tooted the weeds but the songs are clearly mystical and written poeticle enough to be clssified in their own cattigory

ACDC is awesome also! as RUSH! but the Beatles are the best of the all best!
juansemillon 2 years ago
ACDC is a commercial band, they play the same thing over and over again because it works (they sell out). The Beatles are good, but a bit different than Rush. Their lyrics seem to lack in meaning. Of course, not all, but their songs are simple. Rush's songs are complicated and smart. Like I said, the Beatles are good, but not the best.
DerryC69 2 years ago 37
Listen to the later Beatles work, in particular the White Album, Abbey Road and Let it Be. The songs there have lots of underlying meaning, granted though that their songs are not as complicated and poetic as Rush's songs. I like the Beatles in that they have a huge variety of work. Their early stuff is more popular, while their later stuff is more progressive, hard rock, but still popular. But yeah, obviously they are not the same, the Beatles also helped transform rock music in the 60s.
Rogueagmo 2 years ago 3
That's true. I think I only dislike the Beetle's more because everyone likes them only because everyone else does. Not having a mind bugs me more than anything.

blackdeath179 1 year ago
@DerryC69 No Beatles, there'd be no Rush. Beatles, though influenced by black music that preceeded them, lay the blueprints and foundations for all rock music. Therefore, The Beatles were great.

@bassmonkey1962 Recently visited Strawberry Fields in Central Park...it was heartbreaking. Just Imagine what could have been...PEACE
radioheadkids2 1 year ago
@bassmonkey1962 Do you know for a fact that there would be no Rush if there were no Beatles? Rush is a progressive band, they would have been there regardless. The Beatles were an awesome band, but their lyrics were not as inventive or sophisticated as Rush's were/is. They have some songs that are really good though. To each their own I guess.
DerryC69 1 year ago
@DerryC69 AC/DC is the best rock n roll band ever. Rush may be the greatest progressive rock band the world has ever seen. But for just pure, simple, bluesy, in your face rock and roll, AC/DC is second to no one. So they play the same riffs over and over, can anybody makes them rock like AC/DC? I think not. Let's see Geddy Lee die and then the band come out with their biggest album ever that same year with a different singer...
kjm0227 1 year ago
@kjm0227 That is true, AC/DC are simple, good rock and roll. I am just into the more complicated stuff with deeper meaning.
DerryC69 1 year ago
@DerryC69 Rush is definitely a great band, but wow.. no they are not close to as innovative and talented as the bands you mention .. You need to widen your horizon. There are loads of 'deep' and thoughtful musicians out there - if that's what you're seeking. Rush is one of them. But don't misunderstand this, Rush is very good. P.S. What are you talking about, when you say that AC/DC play the same thing over and over again? You're dead wrong. They play loud music, not stereotypical music.
AlbinoPolarBears 1 year ago
@AlbinoPolarBears They are way more innovative and talented than AC/DC, but the Beatles are different. The Beatles would have the same talent, but a bit less creativity, however, their creativity still beats many bands out there, especially for today's bands. The Beatles sang about love in many of their songs, so there was one main, common theme.
Listen to their music, their beats are the same. I am sure they would admit to it. They play loud music with the same beat.
DerryC69 1 year ago
@DerryC69 AC/DC is a good band... but they can't hold a candle to Rush. The Beatles... gotta love 'em.
gapingmaw20 1 year ago
@DerryC69 This is a dumb argument on it's own, The Beatles are amazing, yes they were simple at the beginning but The White Album ect. was amazing and deep, ACDC can sometimes be very commercial but they were great when Bon Scott was the front man, and Rush is The Holy Trinity they are amazing, they never competed or argued with each other, so why are all of you?

@TheMultiMystery just knocked the head on the nail dude why dont fellow fans stick together and talk about the good times man insted of sayin whos better beatles rock in they own way.. i mean the long and winding road blastin on a country lane xD ? now thats awsome
thinlizzyfan101 1 year ago
@DerryC69 You are right. The Beatles have good musical compositions. The problem is that many of their songs have lyrics that you can listen in Jonas Brothers songs. According to my opinion, a good rock must have a good musical composition and also a reflexive and deep lyric.
juanpus 1 year ago
@DerryC69 that's the point! without being that complex, the Beatles made also great music! Music is not to be the harder it can to be good. And you just CAN'T compare the Rush and the Beatles.
(but I prefer Rush ;))

@DerryC69 Ever heard of Floating Fourths? Its a technique in music that the Beatles INVENTED, and it was something even Beethoven couldn't come up with. Don't get me wrong, I'm a bigger RUSH fan than anything else, and I'm not a big Beatles fan. But they had complex shit going too...

@DerryC69 Rush themselves would disagree you, twit. Why don't you take a Long and Winding Road...
radioheadkids2 1 year ago
@DerryC69 Sorry but you just said something extremely misguided. Sure Rush are complicated and they do a good job at it; but complicated isn't always better than simple, and it's niave to think that way. Does being simple make Times They Are A Changin' any less of a masterpiece? One of my favorite Neil Young songs, Borrowed Tune is one simple verse repeated. Also, not all the Beatles songs "lack in meaning". Yesterday and Help may be some of the most meaningful songs ever to me.
MetroidFan621 1 year ago
@MetroidFan621 I was just talking about AC/DC, not Neil Young. Also, complicated does not mean better, look at Dream Theatre. All I am saying, and this is just MY opinion, Rush has better lyrics and musical talent then a lot of the bands, namely AC/DC in this instance. People all have different tastes, and I was just showing my different opinion.
DerryC69 8 months ago
@DerryC69 I totally agree with you, but The Beatles are the best, considering the nature of their career
Herringish 1 year ago
@DerryC69 Ddue, agreed Rush is much classier, but AC/DC were good hard rock, and fun to hear. Ofcourse not close to what Rush or Floyd or Zeppelin are, but definitely not sell outs man.
Well, my opinion anyways :)

Carthsgtr 10 months ago
@Carthsgtr don't even put blink 182 in the same category as rush, zeppelin, and the beatles. blink 182 doesn't have anything really special to offer(as far as i've listened to them). The beatles have good music in general but also great song writing for their time. Rush has great instrumentation and great lyrics as well. zeppelin had great instrumentation and had more impact than rush. blink 182 isn't bad but it reminds me of springsteen who writes good stuff but its nothing special
happyface4444 9 months ago
@happyface4444
Ever heard of a joke? Lol I like Blink, but I think it was pretty obvious that I wasn't being serious. I agree with you on Springsteen by the way.
Carthsgtr 9 months ago
@DerryC69 beatles have pretty complicated songs, especially for coming out of the era of elvis. not as complicated as rush, but still good for their time, a day in the life is pretty complex, as well as the abbey road medley. they are two different to compare. beatles also had great meaning in their songs julia, let it be, and revolution. if you are judging by how complicated the music is rush would beat the beatles, but king crimson would beat rush. i give the three of them a tie for first
happyface4444 10 months ago
@happyface4444 and @Carthsgtr I agree with @DerryC69 The Beatles are my favorite band but they really only started getting DEEP in the late 60's in the earlier 60's it was "I want to hold your hand" and "She Loves You" Rush's first hit Working man was 100% thought provoking. I believe Tool and The Beatles (maybe not blink 182 kinda weak to put with the prior) are defiantly GREAT bands but I'm gonna give this round to Rush
Kooscoose 9 months ago
@juansemillon WHAT? How are the Beatles the best? They played the same stuff over and over, and Paul McCartney couldn't write lyrics worth a damn, but his tunes were catchy. John Lennon wrote well, but his music was mediocre at best.
