  • Groovin' tune...the boys at their best;

  • From August Burns Red all the way to Steely Dan, youtube is a great tool for musical fulfillment.

  • @xLeveler except August Burns Red isn't music...

  • @waltermcbobom Oh, right, sorry... And I guess homosexuals are straight.

  • @xLeveler wow, what an inapplicable comparison, try being a fake intellectual somewhere else, you're not fooling anyone emo kid.

  • @waltermcbobom Lol, calm down Mr. "Intellectual"! My comparison was pretty dang applicable. But speaking of inapplicable comparisons, I believe the 'Emo Kid and August Burns Red' one was quite mistaken. I'm far from emo... I listen to August Burns Red all the time and I'm still an all honor's student. I don't see what's so emo about it... Lol.

  • Does anyone know the name of the melody at 1:54? I'm so close to recognizing it but just can't name it! HELP!

  • @JamaisMEC

could be a quote from another fagen song on a solo album - nightfly, or from guitar jazz of that ilk?

I know zackly what you mean.

it sounds like late 50s very early 60s jazz.

kenny burrell? joe pass [was he guitar?] brain is stretched here.

google jazz guitar 50-60s, its a similar sound to kenny burrell and guy on tauhid by pharoah sanders that semi acoustic thing.

mind you, becker loves earlier jazz and doo wop so could be french grapelli maybe?

    aaargh!

  • at the beacon, tonight

  • Where's Denny Diaz?..he always banged the shit outta this one.

  • Always has the most gorgeous backup singers...homina homina

  • appearing at the minnesota state fair in about a week or two

  • Great soloing but to be honest no one could touch Denny and Skunk on the original recording. Probably almost my favourite guitar solos of all time. I almost ran off the road the first time I heard it as an 18yo it was that jaw dropping!

  • that's music baby

  • smokin!!what players!!

  • When i first heard this song, I thought he said sparkly your vagina

  • cool song to play in rock band

  • awesome song the very best, best the it band monumental

  • Shining your Depends?

  • John Herington is so fucking amazing!!!!

  • A Bodhisatva is a buddhist who has achieved nirvana and helps others to do the same.

  • @rgiblin6 it is a level of life condition, ichinen sanzen ......mercy too, for us all . i bow to you outta respect for your potential Buddhahood. So theBuddha's in da hood : we just don't realize it.Peace out living long and prospering.

  • I'm 13 years old, when they hear Justin Bieber in my classroom, I call them children. When I hear Steely Dan, they call me a boring old. I'm proud, man!

  • @TheFreakyFunzies I'm 17 years old and have been getting the same thing my entire life! I'm a proud Steely Dan fan, and I know exactly what you mean. Glad you enjoy the video and their music!

  • @drhey19 19 year old college student, I get shit on too cuz I'm not a fan of lil wayne or any of the other shit on the radio nowadays. Since Steely Dan's music is still appreciated after nearly 40 years, it just goes to show their music is timeless (only the greats last so long).

  • @drhey19

Been a big steely dan fan for 39 yrs...

I've gone from a snotty pre tenager to a 54 yr old and have the same passion for their music today ( as a guitarist) as I always have...

GREAT music knows no boundaries...Rock on dudes & dudettes!!

  • @TheFreakyFunzies

you know many people dont listen to the music like but thats whats makes music so special :)

if everybody would listen to music like this one then this style would be most popular and it wouldnt have any spirit at all :) btw i have the same problem :) Its just their opinion i dont give a daim :)

  • @TheFreakyFunzies

I was 13 when i first discovered Steely Dan....I was on a school trip in Auckland, New Zealand, and on the way back they played "Ricky Don't lose that Number"....I was like, omg, I LOVE this

Then, when I could afford my first stereo system, the first record I bought was "Steey Dan's greatest hits"

And my love affair with their music began:)

  • @TheFreakyFunzies don't let it faze you, same thing happened to me. Luckily I had a bass player and drummer who loved them, we did a few covers at the band concerts... they are all close minded, and I am enlightened pro musician now :)

  • @TheFreakyFunzies Steely Dan is REAL MUSIC. Relish the fact that you have a lifetime ahead of you to discover all the great music of the ages, now, thanks to YouTube and other sources, it's more available than at any time in human history. It's a glorious thing. Cheers.

  • @TheFreakyFunzies Thumbs up, kid!, this is one kick A! tune, if you can appreciate this level of music you are on a very especial league! I wish more kids were like you ;)

  • @toddmeister. Same here.

  • I can´t find any recent band that can play like this. Steely dan y the true royalty of music. Have you heard toto trying to play this song??.

  • Great Up... Thanks. Been a fan of theirs forever and ever... Anyone got a live version of (Bye Bye) Dallas or Berrytown???? from the days before Steely Dan when they were simply known as Walter Becker and Donald Fagen.... Great Tracks. Of course Berry Town later became Barrytown...

  • The backing voice singers are just lovely

  • what ONE person decided to dislike this video?

  • Regarding the drummer; I believe that's Steve Carlock, who is an exceptional drummer, but SD often chose a particular drummer for just a single song on an album. Gadd, Pocaro, Keltner, Gordon, Purdy..... Who can copy all of them? I remember when I discovered SD, I remember thinking, "I've finally discovered great music!"

  • Fanfuckingtastic!!!

  • still a great band

  • this band is as tight as a Japanese schoolgirl's ponytail. nice of Becker to let someone else have a guitar solo, generous of him.

  • That drummer's tone is pretty neat though he has a funny way of playing them. A bit too powerful for Dan's music, I think. Kinda works but...can't beat Gadd or Pocaro.

  • Great song to get my day started

  • Awesome what a great song with my coffee to get my fat ass moving

  • who's on guitar?

  • @HolyWarspunishmentdu Jon Herington. Who's been touring with them since 2000. He's an amazing player!

  • @drhey19

Super technical guitar player...my emotions take hold of me way too early in these tunes to manage to complete them on guitar...big disadvantage to being a bigger fan than a guitar player....anyone know how to overcome this?....it's been 30+ yrs and I still can't channel it?

  • Very good. The first lead guitarist loses me for a split second when he modulates his lead down. But that's why I'm here and he's on stage playing the hell out of his guitar. The other guitarist gets crazy on his guitar too. The whole band is good. Excellent.

  • @danielburess he throw in a lot of flatted 5ths on the run

  • excellent my fav SD song.

  • Very amazing. Smokin drummer... whew! Nice job guys. :)

  • you either get or or you don't, cause this band is a legend

  • damn this song is hard (every instrument)

  • Worth the time just see stunning Carolyn sing backup.

  • @Entertainmentwriter WHAT ONE IS THAT? that must be the one in the middle.

  • @THEPOCONOJOECHANNEL At 1:05 she in on the left. She has a great solo career.

  • Haw haw haw haw ... it ain't your drinkin that's got you stinkin, it's your stinkin thinkin that gots you drinkin ...

gonna sell my house in town

third and seventeen ... where have you gone, Fran Tarkenton? Look out -- Fagen fadin, seagull comin out of the sun ... so long and thanks for all the fish.

  • The first Guitar soloists guitar is so gorgeous.

  • @bigace511 I like monstrous guitars better. Something with some wear, like Frankenstein, or Willie Nelson's guitar, or claptons Blackie

  • Wow, I never thought I would say this, but the guitars in this song were really weak. Walt usually tears it up on leads but this time neither one of them had it happening. Both solos were totally stiff and way to sterile.

  • Butchered it.

  • Absolutely Brilliant, what talent !

  • Carolyn Leonheart (backing vocals singer) ..i'm in love with youuuuuuuuuu!!!!!

  • @jazzmanEE Sorry dude..I saw her 1st !!

  • one of my favourite steely dan songs... it's just so great \m/

  • Can someone tell me where to find the Bodhisattva bass tab?

  • Sorry, I wish I knew.

  • @ps3fanforever Chordie..or at least guitar tabs

  • @ps3fanforever Use your ears and tab it out! It's a very repetitive and simple bassline, and will be very helpful to your musical ear!

  • @ps3fanforever learn it by ear..

  • @ps3fanforever Where do you live? because I found bass tabs for it.

  • @ps3fanforever

No, but I can tell you where the real one is for six easy payments of 11.00 per month!

There are bonuses! Act now and get "propagandistic" reasons why the protocols are FORGERIES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • i like the record better cause it is more heavy. you cant hear the guitars as well. this is like a jazz version compared to the album

  • YEAH!! Parker Changes!! Amazing solo by Herington

  • He doesn't even sing the "VA" in bodhisattva. Just bodhesAT..

  • BECKEEEEEEEEEEEEEERRRRRRRRR

Oh yes, he still has it!

  • love the guitar solo

  • I still idolize the drummer and guitarist alot

  • The version of this song on the 'Alive in America' album is the best. It's probably my favorite song ever, the solo is much different (better in my opinion). It has so much more energy.

  • I was jsut thinking that

but this is still all good

  • You mean like 94 and versions like this one?

    watch?v=EeBPSSAG6Yw&feature=PlayList&p=1EC02C94E7915169&playnext=1&playnext_from=PL&index=15

  • wow...That solo is godlike! I went to bodhitsatva just listening to it.

  • I agree rlundquist, these guys are masters of the studio and always have been but seeing them live and still kicking it after almost 40 years will be incredible; DC in Nov!

  • I'll be there Sunday night too!

  • DENNY DIAS WHERE ARE YOU!!!!!!??????

  • Was Denny Dias the guy who replaced Terry Kath in Chicago?

  • No, I don't think Dias was ever a member of Chicago. Kath was replaced by the terrible (IMO) Donnie Dacus.

  • Thank you, I knew it somthing like that.

Dacus did suck, but how many guys could replace Terry.

  • Right on.

  • Stray Cats cover this too, a little faster. But the Dan's is the best. Saw this tour @ Red Rocks. A-freakin-mazing. Never the same concert - always fresh solos, harmonizations, bridges, players...

~ Another child of the '50s who's grooved on the Dan since the beginning

  • Mr. Fagen and Becker make it look so darn easy! Though I love the '70's lineup (Jeff Baxter, Danny Dias, etc) This one is also fabulous! Pretty backup singers too! Thanks guys!

  • what does Bodhisattva mean??

  • In Buddhism, Bodhisattva is an enlightened existance, or an enlightened human being.

  • my fucking god, walter becker's outro solo is out of this world..seriously kills it on this. great version!

  • @ForeverMan91 Amen to that! That is the first solo I've heard him play live.

  • @ForeverMan91

???? the other dude blows becker out of the water... (not to be confused with walter)

It would appear that Sir Walter is suffering from something, and struggles to keep at the forefront...

too bad age and God knows what is ailing him keep our greatest heroes from maintaining their greatness...

I struggle daily to achieve mediocrety as a guitarist....my fingers never could follow my mind and ears God bless our guitar heroes!!!...and I don't mean the cheesy rip off of the 2000's

  • These cats will be kicking my old guitar playing ass 'till I die.

It is a real pleasure to have lived in a lifetime where their music is appreciated

by us who listened asthey came up (52)

and young people who also can appreciate tthe music.

    Gives me hope.

  • Toto does a version of this song and it is spectacular!!!!!!!!!!

  • OHH NOOO YOU gotta play that solo like dennis did on the album

  • I just realized that I've been a Steely Dan devotee since I was 17 maybe longer? I'm now 51 - could it be that long? Since I live in Oz I've never had the chance to see them live - so these clips are manna from heaven for me. They are great live and in tems of their studio work would have to be on any thinking music lovers top 10 list - surely.

  • @toddmeister168 I hear ya todd. Me too.

  • Herrington does justice to the originals, despite their availability, or not. Neat twists, clever. Blame Don, all his fault. Looking forward to the Set List Tour, Boston, this year.

  • gotta respect becker tho. he absolutely crushes this outro solo.

  • bodhisattva Buddhist ideal(Sanskrit), Pali bodhisatta (one whose goal is awakening)

in Buddhism, one who seeks awakening (bodhi)—hence, an individual on the path to becoming a buddha.

  • becker and SD are absolute genius. Never get tired of hearing these guys

  • Did Walter forget how to play lesd?

  • He does seem to like using the half tone- whole

    tone quite a lot.

  • I dig it

  • HA HA, I was just thinking the same thing, lol

  • The essence of cool.

  • That semi-hollow guitar makes for a really good sound.

  • That guitar solo is so wonderful.

  • what effortless genius.

    enlightenment has its perks :-)

  • Get down Walter....

  • Bhodisatva...so be bop...

  • Carolyn Leonhart's expressiveness is fun to watch. And, you know, she sings too.

  • And is that black girl doing back-up luscious

    or what?

    My gosh she's beautiful!

  • I like the white one.

  • They're both hot. agreed! I love heringtons blatant hit on the root after certain runs negotiating the chromatic inside voice -leading part- if that makes sense. Sometimes he'll make the 'too obvious choice" and it sounds refreshing.

  • AGREED!

  • Herington KILLS on this! Thanks for posting.

  • OMG! They are even better than Toto in this song, really!

  • They wrote it!

Toto does a great version, but heringtons playing on this is just so creative. Descending

    chromatic triads!

  • Yes definitely try to see them! I just saw them, and even at 60 years old, Donald is amazing.

  • Nice. I've been looking for a live version of this one. Thanks Doc.

  • I have to see this band before I die...or Donald does!
