Brian has the tone and the sensibility of a craftsman. He can run easily with the big dogs. Lets face it, Brian brought a lot of tricks to Vai and his generation
@oddoddwest97 My first concert ever was Satriani 1995 or so, when his self-titled album came out (he's on the cover I believe with a hat and chin-length hair), and out walked Joe on stage HEAD SHAVED BALD. So I guess I saw one of his first public appearances in that situation. Didn't matter he kicked ass on stage. I've seen him at least 6 times and I'VE YET TO SEE HIM PERFORM "MIGHTY TURTLE HEAD!" DAMMIT!
@loldacz I believe you are right. I was there that night. i had won a trip via VH-1 and we had a list of all the musicians who performed there for the week. I think you are right on the drummer.

Yeah you're right. He still has that 1970's hair. His hair is probably just as old as his guitar xD.
Btw, I've got a Guitar Hero vid of Stevie Vai's Tender Surrender. If you want to you can watch, if not, then you don't. I'm not forcing you to watch, I'd appreciate it if you'd watch my vids.
@josiahgust Yes I read that too. Brian and his dad built it from an old fireplace and I think he uses it to this day. Brian also almost didn't pursue music in the way that he did as he excelled at astronomy and had to choose between the two.

MAy 4ever!! <3 He really is miles further than vai and satriani. A really good musician doesn't play the hardest things in the world, he plays the best! He has no need to show off with his technical skills because he plays with such feeling and such love for the music that makes the solos sooo much more alive =) May 4ever!!
yeah... that is true..... maybe Brian May hasn´t got any bravado or jerk-off showoff style like any other overrated guitar heroes (which i respect) but his sound is truly original... on the other hand, you could listen a solo between Vai or Satriani and you couldn´t tell the difference. Eddie Van Halen has a similar playing but much more recognizeable.... Brian you may play slower but people love you and respect you...
I think I should mention something about Satriani on here. Satriani has the most Grammy Award nominations of any artist (15) without winning. That tells you something. Even though Satch hasn't won anything, he's is still a great guitar player. Awards are meaningless in music. It's nice for good music to be recognized, but sometimes it's not. And an artists' success shouldn't be measured by a Grammy, but by the music that he or she creates. Satriani, Vai, and May, are all great guitar players.
You're everyone's bitch for saying something so fucking stupid like that. Next time, be4 u post a comment... GET UR FACTS RIGHT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Learn how to spell before you start giving it large "cyber warrior." Vai was taught by Satriani FACT, May is original FACT. So (1) Learn how to spell and (2) Get YOUR facts right. Fucking cyber warriors I shit 'em.
Dude, I OBVIOUSLY know Vai was taught by Satriani, there was a comment before, that said Vai was Satriani's bitch, and their styles are COMPLETELY different, that's what I meant. And I know May, I never said he wasn't original. I love Queen and Brian May and respect them. My reply was to another dude...
Vai may be a more flashier player (fashion aside) but the songs Brian May and Queen wrote will be played decades from now whereas I cant say the same thing about Vai's music .
belarus84, brian may might be a famous musician, but have you ever even watched steve vai play a guitar??? you say that he plays with no emotion and further you say he cannot build a solo.... do you even know what a guitar is?? if steve vai is not THE MOST passionate guitar player in the world, then tell me who is???????? he is definitely not my favorite either man, but there is no one who plays as though the guitar was an extension of his own flesh and blood body like mr steve vai.
That's a very ignorant statement joshkerr10. Brian May creates the most melodic solos ever known to mankind. He can play fast and his phrasing is by far, imo, more listener friendly than steve vai's stuff. I rather hear a solo with a good melody than a blare of notes.
No, I'm not implying that at all. Steve Vai makes some great melodic stuff. However, every now and then he can sometimes be "too much of a good thing" If it came down to who would I rather listen to, it'd probably be May, however, if I'm in a more shredder type mood and I want to hear something over the top, then I'd pick Vai. It just depends on my mood. I think people should realize that there's no such thing as the best guitarist. We can only be as good as we make ourselves to be.
Anyway, Vai does shred, and doesn't play so melodicly (although he easily COULD), but the idea Vai wants you to get by his solos, is not that he is the fastest, nor the coolest, it's that he plays guitar in such a passionate way, he doesn't care of how the things he's playing sounds (melodically) , he just plays what he wants to, what he feels like playing... I STRONGLY respect May, don't tell me I don't know him, but I feel Brain May is'nt so revolutionary and outstanding as Vai... or Joe
Well. Revolutionary can mean different things. I consider both of them revolutionary. The reason why I consider May revolutionary is because of the songs he makes and the solos he creates. I mean, the solo for Bohemian Rhapsody is so melodic and so memorable that it is "revolutionary" along with many other guitar solos/riffs. Another thing about May is his guitar tone. He has one of the most original tones known to man. In those aspects, I consider him and his music with Queen revolutionary.
What you said about Steve Vai is absolutely correct. Steve Vai plays whatever way he wants to because that's what naturally comes out. I think what guitar players have to understand is that the way you play is not really something you can change. I mean, you can change by become better at the guitar, but to change the way you play is something harder to do. Keep the style you have.
listener friendly is a spot on phrase. I love Steve Vai and frequently listen to his music. But, Brian May does compose songs that are listened to by a broader audience. The majority of Steve Vai fans are guitar players or musicians themselves.
Please man! Steve Vai is nothing... He has incredible technique but nothing else. He can't write a good song, can't build a solo... Sad, because he's a good sort. But.... he's like Malmsteen... Speed, speed, speed without emotion. BRIAN MAY is much better!!! And he's a legend... Not only because of Queen.
Um. Have you listened to his music ... for the love of god, lotus feet.. I could go on and on... do some research. Brian May and Steve Vai are apples and oranges. But both fantastic.
being famous for 'being in queen' is quite a statement. It is like saying John Lennon was only famous for being in the beatles. Queen, was and is, hugh around the world. Everywhere. And Brian May can put queen back together with Paul Rodgers and sell out arenas... so, being Brian May is pretty good, I'd think.
Stage volume has nothing to do with it. Whoever mixed this video is to blame - everybody's amplifiers were miked up and were at concert volumes. It's the audio engineer that mixed it like this - Vai had nothing to do with it...
When you play with a distortion, the volume knob of the guitar changes the signal level, and that changes the distortion, not the main volume.. more signal, more distortion. A clear example is when you hear Brian May playing "clean" (in general but not in this video), he just turn down the guitar volume. Here Vai just needed a rich sound on that part of the song, so he raised up the guitar volume to max, and switched to bridge pickup (but this is another point :-)
He plays so f*ing loud, i cannot hear Brian. I hate these selfish stupid musicians. You can see Vai turning up his f*ing volume knob at 0:44 (very "discreetly")... bitch
Queen was a great band because every one of them knew when to play/sing louder and when to be in the background.
I used to admire Steve Vai, but this shows me what he really is made of: narcissism.
Long life to the king, Brian May!!! (the humble, greater one). And to Satch, the other hero.
You're "half right" in my opinion, because like you said, in Queen they knew when to be loud and when to be in the background. So maybe Brian thought he should be in the background in this one?
I respect your opinion, but the point is that from 0:44 on, Brian sounds quieter than background, and only around 1:20 we hear him clearly again.
One thing is to play "piano" and a very different one, to be eaten by another guy's volume. Any good sound engineer, either live or studio, knows that Vai is above every other instrument. And that's wrong, I mean, if you play in a band yourself, you know what I'm talking about.
Now, I don't think that Vai has any hearing problems, because he is an awesome guitarist. He probably lacks the basic ethics of playing with other guys: you cannot be the star all of the time, especially if a very respectable musician is playing at the same time.
What else can I say? They both play great, but Vai attended the Malmsteen school, where guitarists are taught to feel they float above the rest of the world - even their own drum player.
"Brian May, Steve Vai and Joe Satriani - Tie your mother down"
Check for yourself how loud each of these three (May, Vai, Satch) play. The difference is astounding... I'm beginning to believe that Vai truly can't hear himself... which a very common syndrome among most rock guitarists.
Anyway, check it. Sure you'll love how they play that heavy blues.
alright, vai is definitely not trying to keep May down or anything. hes not trying to drown him out or whatever. maybe May should just turn his damn volume up. Vai's pickups could just be a lot hotter, he likes em like that anyway. have you ever SEEN a G3 video?? you can quite clearly hear all three guitarists playing, and the bassists and even the fucking drummer...
oh yeah, this concert is from the Expo 'Sevilla in 92. it was like a G3 concert, inwhich the guy would play his own song with the other guys in the background. then they do jam songs in which May and Satch crank their guitars back up again. they each played songs go find them.
Steve vai is imo one of the best guitar players out there. I love his phrasing, I love hios tone and attitude on guitar. But what I really hate is that on every video of him on youtube playing with other guitarists, he just has to turn his amp so much louder than the other ones that you can barely hear anything but steve. stevie's spanking with FZ light be the only exception.
Who "wrote" that piece? It's terribly boring and pointless...

I STRONGLY respect May, don't tell me I don't know him, but I feel Brain May is'nt so revolutionary and outstanding as Vai... or Joe
StatiKtheBand 2 years ago

The majority of Steve Vai fans are guitar players or musicians themselves.

brian may cant live with vai.vai is light years ahead of brian may, brian may just famous for being in queen.

whats your problem, Brian May has written some amazing riffs and great songs for Queen and otherwise. more so than Vai.
MuppetThumper 2 years ago 4
nah sorry bud.brian may is noooooooowhere near as good as mr vai
ibanez777vbk 2 years ago
Not only because of Queen.
belarus84 2 years ago
well Vai is not at all like malmsteen, maybe you dont know him enough.
you're talking about emotion?
Listen to whispering a prayer and for the love of god, watch both videos on youtube and tell me it again. (watch it ;) )

10CentHead 2 years ago 2
When you play with a distortion, the volume knob of the guitar changes the signal level, and that changes the distortion, not the main volume.. more signal, more distortion. A clear example is when you hear Brian May playing "clean" (in general but not in this video), he just turn down the guitar volume. Here Vai just needed a rich sound on that part of the song, so he raised up the guitar volume to max, and switched to bridge pickup (but this is another point :-)

This is like the prototype G3

So this is Vai!
And to Satch, the other hero.
steppingONyou 3 years ago
You're "half right" in my opinion, because like you said, in Queen they knew when to be loud and when to be in the background. So maybe Brian thought he should be in the background in this one?
VintageMord 3 years ago
I respect your opinion, but the point is that from 0:44 on, Brian sounds quieter than background, and only around 1:20 we hear him clearly again.
One thing is to play "piano" and a very different one, to be eaten by another guy's volume. Any good sound engineer, either live or studio, knows that Vai is above every other instrument. And that's wrong, I mean, if you play in a band yourself, you know what I'm talking about.
steppingONyou 3 years ago
Now, I don't think that Vai has any hearing problems, because he is an awesome guitarist. He probably lacks the basic ethics of playing with other guys: you cannot be the star all of the time, especially if a very respectable musician is playing at the same time.
What else can I say? They both play great, but Vai attended the Malmsteen school, where guitarists are taught to feel they float above the rest of the world - even their own drum player.
Flawed musicianship.

Update-
By the way, dude, I just saw this video:
"Brian May, Steve Vai and Joe Satriani - Tie your mother down"
Check for yourself how loud each of these three (May, Vai, Satch) play. The difference is astounding... I'm beginning to believe that Vai truly can't hear himself... which a very common syndrome among most rock guitarists.
Anyway, check it. Sure you'll love how they play that heavy blues.
Good luck
steppingONyou 3 years ago
alright, vai is definitely not trying to keep May down or anything. hes not trying to drown him out or whatever. maybe May should just turn his damn volume up. Vai's pickups could just be a lot hotter, he likes em like that anyway. have you ever SEEN a G3 video?? you can quite clearly hear all three guitarists playing, and the bassists and even the fucking drummer...

oh yeah, this concert is from the Expo 'Sevilla in 92. it was like a G3 concert, inwhich the guy would play his own song with the other guys in the background. then they do jam songs in which May and Satch crank their guitars back up again. they each played songs go find them.

it doesn't really matter... I'd rather hear Vai than May any day lol....

I don't think Steve Vai would do that to Brian May.
I'm sure Brian May is one of Steve's idols.
I think you have just misunderstood.
