As a young boy in the early sixties Craig and his fantastic vehicle were like super heroes to me. I ve just finished reading Speed Duel and learned how many other brave men sought the land speed record, some at the cost of their own lives, at the same time Craig did. Stirring stuff, and we will never see a similar competition ever again.
I remember watching the clips of this on the national news back then. Those were BIG numbers back then!! You can still visit the actual car at the Chicago Museum of Science and Industry...pretty cool.
The Beach Boys wrote a song about this called "Spirit of America"
