In 1933 when unemployment was at 25% the Roosevelt administration decided to pay farmers NOT to plant in order to raise prices. In the summer of 1933 the administration decided to cull 70% of all US piglets. They were storing and witholding grain at a time of food crisis! I'm sure it's inconceivable that the govt CAUSED part of the problem.

@ITakeAStand Don't get me wrong, I'm not a liberal or a conservative. I believe we all have a different view on different subjects so I don't label myself as any group. I think if you have a problem being taxed to death then sit down and look at everything you are being taxed for. In a perfect world nobody would have to pay taxes, but since this is reality I say we should eliminate the LEAST important taxes. I feel like helping another American is never a waste of money.

I have no problem paying taxes toward veterans, public housing, or hospitals and fire departments in my area. I only have a problem with insignificant and foolish projects that do not help the problem we ALL face at this very moment. There was community and church and tons of places people got help. NOW, just stand in line and get your govt check. @ismeme in fact, as I dig into this I am finding that during the depression very few died of starvation. In 1933 when unemployment was at 25% the Roosevelt administration decided to pay farmers NOT to plant in order to raise prices. In the summer of 1933 the administration decided to cull 70% of all US piglets. They were storing and witholding grain at a time of food crisis! I'm sure it's inconceivable that the govt CAUSED part of the problem.

Because there are plenty of articles out there about malnutrition prior to social programs and how this led to diseases like TB and increased deaths, especially among children, the elderly and disabled. @ismeme it goes on to say that TB affects protein metabolism and nutritional status. malnutrition doesn't CAUSE TB but TB can CAUSE malnutrition. And though I look and look I can't seem to find the dying in the streets in the USA. I have found that in 1929 the life expectancy was 57.1 and in 1932 rose to 63.3. I think you mistake linking communicable diseases to malnutrition.

Malnourished people have compromised cellular (T cell) immune systems, which means if exposed to TB they're more likely to develop the active disease.
