I think that the game has more meaning if Meryl dies because Snake realizes that he could maybe care for someone else, as we know Snake doesn't really develop a relationship with Meryl over the series (especially in Mgs 4) so it really doesn't matter because their "romance" really has no hold of the story, where Meryl's death taught Snake that he could've cared for someone other than himself.
