@GainingBananas guinea pigs are very sensitive to drafts, so a little wind, or cold tiles, is enough to make them sick, I have 6 guinea pigs and know exactly how it is, and a little shade from the sun is shining does not mean that these creatures do not have cold.

@Rainything I owned 2 guinea pigs for about 6 years until they both died a few months apart. I kept them outside in a wire hutch that was elevated off the ground, but not protected from wind etc. They were safe from creatures that may have wanted to harm them, but not from the wind or cold, and in the worst weather they would get water in their hutch. They lasted 6 years like that, when the average lifespan is about 4 years. Pretty sure a bit of running about every now and then is fine.

I'm no expert, but the guinea pigs looked pretty healthy. And he gave them a nudge to get them started, then steped forwards and whistled them along. He could have slapped them or made kicking/threatening motions.

I think it could be a fun sport in North America if it is handled properly. Like Superdogs and similar sports for other animals. Though in all likely hood being that these are small animals it wouldn't take long for someone in a back alley to spoil the sport for everyone :(

These guinea pigs were most likely slaughtered soon after this race. I know they are food in this country but I still feel terrible about it. That is why I became a vegetarian.

@detestsleep In this country, they are nottt kept for pets, they are kept for making money like this (have you ever seen hound racing facilities? not pretty) or they will be eaten later in life. You don't need to train a guinea pig to hide. This is what will go through a guinea pig's head at a time like this "Scary, loud thing= run= hide= go into only hiding place available" You can't make money off of small bets on the pigs when you care for them well; the costs will outdo the profits.

So if you wanted to produce an equivalent amount of guinea pig (3lbs) to and average cow (1400 lbs) you would need to rear 467 guinea pigs and they would likely eat more food than the cow. Guniea pigs on the other hand is animals that likes to hide. In the wild they run around in high grass etc. In captivity owners give them a little house or any other form for shelter, as its in a guniea pigs nature to hide from danger.
