I live about an hour from Cambodia. The S21 and the Killing Fields are so depressing. Pol Pot and the KR murdered almost a quarter of the population. Most of the population are 21 and below as a result. They tried to do with curencies by paying everyone in rice, dressing and looking the same by having identical haircuts. now they are some of the nicest people you could meet. Awful what the last generation suffered. Today is the trial of one of the KR henchmen who is pleading mercy

Well I guess its all a matter of what cirumstances people are in at the time. I know europeans have been cruel. I know all about Nazis, Vietnam war, Colonialism etc. But still just look at what China is doing today, N Korea, and Vietnam, Cambodia and Thailand probably still do their fair share. Burma, Laos, Phillipines etc. But I guess it is just a human trait, but to me it seems more present in Asiatics today. But that will change with time like Japan.???

South Vietname wasn't a legitimate government...they actually refused to hold elections in fear the communists would get into power - that's how the vietnam war started. North Vietnam ended up invading Cambodia and preventing further genocide in the 70's.
In fact, it was the cambodian coup, practically devised by the CIA, that lead to the collapse of the country through an incapable government, and ultimately lead to the KR's take over of the country and the beginning of the genocide.

I lost my father, sister and grandmother and grandfather, and other relatives. The Khmere Rouge came to take me that day, I was only 4 years, when at the same time the Vietnamese came, and the KR ran away. I live yet another day.
