haaaa. the fact that people are even mentioning "travis" and "peart" makes me laugh. everything has it's own place. get real. you guys will never play real music.
@paisteguy799 Krupa was in very bad health at this time. His energy level was not there. He had heart trouble as well as blood cancer, so I'd give him a little bit of a pass.
Dont start talking about modern drummers. Just dont. We can talk about peart and barker all day but if it werent for these two guys drumming wouldnt be what it is today. Sure neil and travis are skilled, but these guys are the INNOVATORS of drumming. So shut up and study your history. Oh and just adding Neil Peart is the best in the world. period.
Buddy had amazing technique and all the flash but I much prefer Gene's style. He sounded much more musical in my opinion, and more about the groove. Another drummer I would put in the class of Krupa would be Joe Morello...a true class act, never overplayed, and again, more about the groove.. .......Never will understand why so many drummers judge someone's playing soley on their speed. It''s what you DON:T play that often say's more musically than what you do. Gene proves it here very well!
Gene was a serious alcoholic and Buddy took much better care of himself which contributed to Gene's aging and loss of speed. Yes,Buddy always was a superior technician but to say Gene was just an old slow fool is an idiotic statement and shows a total lack of knowledge at how great Krupa was in his prime.
I feel the drums are one of the hardest instruments you can play but I real buddy made him look like a dumb ass who walked on stage not knowing what he was doing
Two different styles, and a level shared beyond the judgements of anyone here. Swansong?? A romantic allusion predicated on preferences, not performance. Sidenote...follow both of these gentlemens careers and their breakthroughs. They are not one 'better' than another. To show my leanings, I'll choose Lionel Hampton.
@joensab You're right. The first thought that came to mind when I saw this was how technically superior Buddy was to Gene. But after watching the video many more times, I realized that so much of Gene's mastery is what he didn't play - the space between notes that wasn't filled, just before dropping a splash cymbal or cracking a rimshot that, in retrospect, was perfect. Both great drummers, and even better musicians. That's the highest calling, I think.
I love it how most modern drummers think that more drums is better, bigger is better, and louder is better. But look at these guys. Two of the best drummers that have ever set foot on this Earth, and they are minimalist as far as gear. One rack tom, two floor toms, yet this is perfect. These two men (Rich more) have a gift. You can not beat these guys. They are the masters, the gods themselves.
@MasCampanaDrummer Don't be silly, it's moronic and ignorant to say Buddy is more gifted than Gene. I have gained more inspiration from listening to Gene's stuff over and over than Buddy's.
@catfacesandwich I've always been more of a Gene guy myself. You're right when you say that (sorry). Anyway, there is some revolutionary style in Rich's playing that we have never seen again.
Gene Krupa was not only a phenomenal drummer, he prompted Slingerland to develop toms with tunable top/bottom heads, which became standard parts of a drum kit. His collaboration with Armand Zildjian led to the development of the modern hi-hat stand, as well as to standardized names and applications for the ride, crash, splash, pang, and swish cymbals. Krupa was not just an amazing drummer--his innovation paved the road for every drummer that came after him.
@TalentInTheRaw Not quite sure how. But I guess everyone's entitled to they're opinion. Even if it is absolutely fucking retarded. Karen Carpenter was average at best. Which is why nearly nobody has heard of her. Except for girls looking for a female drummer to cling on to. Go with that bitch from Heart, whatever her name was. At least people would have heard of her.
@TalentInTheRaw Hmmmm?? What the hell does that mean?? Fill your pipe with some more crack and leave the comments to those that at least know a little of what the fuck they're talking about.
This proves only that Ringo Starr was the best. No, Buddy seemed too high-stress and had something to prove. I had much more fun watching Gene, who was was not trying to go too fast but to have fun and make it sound good. Gene was the better entertainer. Buddy had an axe to grind. After this, Buddy chewed out his band again maybe also.
It's true that Buddy usually held back a little in these drum battles with Gene as he respected him so much. But in this case on Sammy's show and on national TV he showed who was the greatest of all time, there was no comparison here between the two. Sammy went on to record an album with Buddy and his big band in this same year 1966.
SECURITY!!! Some skinny black guy from the audience just jumped in and started dancing along. Then he took off his shoes and gave them away! (LOL - yes, I am being sarcastic. I know he had a minor role as a priest in the Gum Ball Rally movie waaay back in the day).
@GeneralMillss Sorry dude, but every conversation about great drumming will start with Buddy Rich, Gene Krupa, and Jimmy Cobb. No disrespect intended ... but TB isn't even in the same category as these classics.
@GeneralMillss As far as faster, jazz guys have skill, but they only use one pedal, and most drummers can technically double their speed because most modern drummers (like me) use double pedals. But the fact that Krupa and Rich can play the snare a bunch and make it sound good .... well!
@GeneralMillss no matter if he uses a single pedal, he would never do what these old jazz drummers did. it is point less to make these comments no one else would be able to play buddy's fast technique or krupa's aproach, just totally impossible. travis and rich are totally different drummers so you can't compare them.
@mcintoshamps At least ONE person is able to do all this crazy Moeller stuff with hands and feet (foot). It's Buddy rich 2.0 ==> Sir Jojo Mayer, the improved version of Bernard "Buddy" Rich. This guy did the whole drumming community the biggest favour ever by revealing all this technical secrets on his DVD. And his foot skills are way more impressive than the hands.... Greez
@NachyoLulz5596 agreed. i only have one because it came with my drum set, but i never actually coordinated my left foot to use it (which is weird cuz im lefty). it just annoys me, the double pedal. i should really figure out how to use it :P
I love Keith Moon- always have and always will. I agree that folks can be brutal if you don't share the same views or tastes. The Who's music was never about a groove or anything- it was different than the norm.
@cast390 That wasn't a fail, that arm hesitation thing is what Krupa usually does when he breaks. If Buddy hadn't played through it, after Gene's triplets you would've heard his bass drum hit on beat one, and then silence for an even beat before the drums came back in, listen closely!
@cast390 Bonham and moon were two of the four greatest drummers ever, Gene krupa and buddy rich were the other two, if you dont appreciate them, you have no taste in music, deal with it
@cast390 now u are dissing keith moon? are you a drummer? i should hope not. these guys use the form they want, because back then there probably wasnt 'standards' for your form because these guys were some of the first greatest drummers. he just hesitated
@MrDoctorRocker Yes I am but that doesn't mean I have to like everything I see or hear, ever since I was a kid I never liked Moons playing, every who song is a constant drum fill,no groove ,Moon IMO is VERY overrated. Some idiots have even gone as far as comparing him to Bonham, and thats the problem with social networks everyone feels you have to like what they do,disagree and OMG lookout!
Gene was a legend himself and laid down some good patterns in this solo but come on. You watch Buddy and he's not even really trying. I mean the guy was truly a gift from God. I do not believe we'll ever see anything like him again.
To say one over the other is complete IGNORANCE, they were two totally different styles and speed does not mean better, they were both AMAZING and to those on here talking down on either of them, you wouldn't be listening to half of the music today without these legends. When it comes down to it you're just someone giving your opinion on a video site. which opinions are like assholes. EVERYONE has one. Other than that, shut up because unless you led a revolutionary band your words mean nothing.
His technique has been matched, sure not many people are better at crossovers or speed in his hands, but he his footwork isn't great at all, if you watch him in videos, whenever he's doing complicated things his left foot just goes.
Stop arguing who's better than who. Seriously. Gene INVENTED the drum solo. Gene is the giant who Buddy stood on. Buddy had a technique that goes unmatched even to this day. They're both giants of jazz and both deserve respect, just like they respected each other. Both of them did more for the drum set than many other drummers can say, so arguing who's better than who is pointless.
Don't be dumb, Rich just goes all out on his speed but Krupa's solo is so much better, listening wise and feelwise - showing he is an all-round better musician, Rich is overrated, he's wicked don't get me wrong but he's feet are pretty poor and all he does is show off his speed - which makes his solo boring.
Krupa proves how much better he truly is than Rich, and show's how technique and feel is way more important than speed - Rich is still amazing though.
One ingredient here that's always lacking in rock and other styles...a swing feel, an abundance of synchopation and sophistication. Hence the label swing music of course. Even soloing they endlessly complement one another, leaving space, and playing for the music.
notice how they were not actually trying to outdo each other but instead working together to create an awesome show for the audience. that is what the old timers called professionalism.
@GLEACH0001 I don't know.... It looked and sounded to me like Buddy was on a mission to destroy Gene. Buddy is pretty famous for not being that nice of a guy, owns the drums though.
@GLEACH0001 This is all in the name of loving music. We've all seen iconic guitarists try to "out play" each other. Play hard, or go home and damn the haters. If there was any competition, it was for the 'Who is Gonna Have More Fun' contest. If you believe most musicians didn't start off thinking, "I'm better than __," you're naive. We "old timers" hear young whipper-snappers like you trying to belittle our contribution to...whatever. While you're hating, we're creating. Schooled yet, sonny?
I also forgot to mention in my previous post that both of them appear to be having intense orgasms while they solo, doubtless because of their own vortex of cool.
I love this video. Buddy Rich always seemed to be a more technically skilled drummer but not as fun, while Krupa just has so much style in the way he plays. My vote has to go to Gene in this battle.
tis isnt bout hus better, its bout great drumming frens/legends cming together n entertaining....u dunt c modern drummers even wanna do dat nw...dats y u dunt gt shows like tis anymre...m i wrng???
your right man Travis Baker should not even be mentioned with names like Rich and Krupa. ... I heard Baker Try to play a drum solo and it was just about as bad as Keth moons solo with the fish in his drums.
Two of the three greatest drummers here; Joe Morello of course the other. Here Rich 'wins' because its a display of speed and technique. But Krupa had it all over him on the more musical elements, style, dynamics. To each his or her own of course, but for me Rich's speed overwhelms all the other elements and sounds unbalanced for that reason. In Krupa I hear beautiful music, in Rich I hear a magnificent technical exercise.
my left testicle hair could bitchslap travis barker around the set. i tried gene krupa. the amount of skill and one time almost made me lose control of bowels.
@hardballget Oh my god. Thank you for ruining my day for being that asshole who has to mention him on a god damn Buddy video. Here's a crazy thought. If people are sick of hearing about him then how come it is all the haters that talk about him on here? I'd rather hear nothing about him then waste my time reading a stupid comment that people say just to see if they can get thumbs upped on. Just drop him all together and the world will be a happier place!!
Hey I never called anyone an A-hole and I don not hate any person and was not and never will be interested in thumbs up. Have a nice day :D@benjewboynett

@cast390 Bonham and moon were two of the four greatest drummers ever, Gene krupa and buddy rich were the other two, if you dont appreciate them, you have no taste in music, deal with it
JEDrummer100 3 months ago
@cast390 now u are dissing keith moon? are you a drummer? i should hope not. these guys use the form they want, because back then there probably wasnt 'standards' for your form because these guys were some of the first greatest drummers. he just hesitated
MrDoctorRocker 5 months ago

Buddy Rich and Gene Krupa were good drummers but the best is Guy Nadon from Montreal.

RJiminez51 5 months ago
To say one over the other is complete IGNORANCE, they were two totally different styles and speed does not mean better, they were both AMAZING and to those on here talking down on either of them, you wouldn't be listening to half of the music today without these legends. When it comes down to it you're just someone giving your opinion on a video site. which opinions are like assholes. EVERYONE has one. Other than that, shut up because unless you led a revolutionary band your words mean nothing.

My father would love this. Watched Sammy at 7yrs. old perform. awesome video
GreenalienLinda 5 months ago
His technique has been matched, sure not many people are better at crossovers or speed in his hands, but he his footwork isn't great at all, if you watch him in videos, whenever he's doing complicated things his left foot just goes.
TheBigFreckle1 5 months ago

TheBigFreckle1 5 months ago
WTF ur stupid as fuck kid. Rich is obviosly better ur stupid r u watching the same video as me. dumb fuck
rudski3321 6 months ago
Krupa proves how much better he truly is than Rich, and show's how technique and feel is way more important than speed - Rich is still amazing though.

Got to see Rich about a year before he checked out.
Never got to see Krupa. :\

Poor Gene. Buddy eats him alive in this battle. Gene was far past his prime by this time, and Buddy was better than ever.
It is a joy to see them smiling and laughing at the end, though.

@longview3000 starts off as "Sing Sing Sing" and then goes into "Hawaiian War Chant". Not sure what the last bit is.

GLEACH0001 6 months ago 54
@GLEACH0001 Yep. None of that "This is my stage" shizz. And they both truly admired each other's playing.
hotdrumchick 6 months ago
@GLEACH0001 I don't know.... It looked and sounded to me like Buddy was on a mission to destroy Gene. Buddy is pretty famous for not being that nice of a guy, owns the drums though.

@GLEACH0001 -- Are you kidding me? Buddy was blowing Gene away here and he wasn't holding back. They were friends, but please!
djdevine59 4 months ago

Amityrockstarx 6 months ago
I love this video. Buddy Rich always seemed to be a more technically skilled drummer but not as fun, while Krupa just has so much style in the way he plays. My vote has to go to Gene in this battle.

your right man Travis Baker should not even be mentioned with names like Rich and Krupa. ... I heard Baker Try to play a drum solo and it was just about as bad as Keth moons solo with the fish in his drums.
harold9468 6 months ago 7
Two of the three greatest drummers here; Joe Morello of course the other. Here Rich 'wins' because its a display of speed and technique. But Krupa had it all over him on the more musical elements, style, dynamics. To each his or her own of course, but for me Rich's speed overwhelms all the other elements and sounds unbalanced for that reason. In Krupa I hear beautiful music, in Rich I hear a magnificent technical exercise.
