Well I hate when people complain about a player that uses a pick. Well I gonna give you a heads up. I play with both a pick and with my fingers because it depends on which song you play. But with metallica songs it sounds way better when you use a pick. And its one thing that make it sound better, and that is that you can have a solid-flow-rytm-track. Thats why all recordings with jason on bass sounds way better soundwise. Just listen Mexico from 93 and then on mexico from 2009.

When Cliff died it was so sad. When Metallica accepted Jason into the band so did I as a fan and I quickly learned to love Metallica even more with Jason as THE bass player. Only after Jason quit and it was revealed in Some Kind of Monster did we learn that Metallica never fully accepted Jason and now when I watch old vids I see the "3 guys and Jason" knowing that they may have treated him like shit. Curse you Metallica for tarnishing my awesome memories. Jason Rules.
cliff is a very good bass player but I am sure that he is overrated because he's dead like many musicians who gets bigger everyday because of their deaths, if jason had died a couple years after joining metallica, It would have happened the same.
@zamg0d1 : Cliff is overrated in SOME parts and Jason is underrated in most parts. I really like Jason but I like Robert, too. I'd seen him in 2004 and even back then he seemed natural belonging to Metallica. Check out (if you haven't yet) his performance of Battery in SKOM.

Cliff had something in him that is very rare, i mean he loved experimenting doing crazy things, things that are considered forbidden for a bass guitar. Nevertheless he also goes on to say that Jason's bass on AJFA was more than satisfactory. Also the band themselves says that with rob they sound more complete and tight

@zamg0d1 read "Enter Night" the documentary on Metallica, Mick Wall who has spent ample time with metallica on a personal basis says himself Jason could never be as good Cliff. Cliff had something in him that is very rare, i mean he loved experimenting doing crazy things, things that are considered forbidden for a bass guitar. Nevertheless he also goes on to say that Jason's bass on AJFA was more than satisfactory. Also the band themselves says that with rob they sound more complete and tight

@zamg0d1 "If Jason didn't joined, they wouldn't be here today" comeon...3 first albums are epicly good and Cliff was one of the makers so don't call him overrated...he was kind of a If pioneer, i don't say Jason is bad, both are/where different and very good bass players and i love them both for what they have done with Metallica.

@zamg0d1In a way, you're right.Supposing Cliff would have left the band without dying or something, and if Jason died, I'm pretty sure everyone would rather like Jason than Cliff, not because he would have left Metallica, but because Jason would be dead. This is just a theory, and I know that the only thing that separated Cliff from Metallica is death.
Besides, I completly agree with you; Jason brought much style and imagination for Metallica, and just like James, Metallica sucked a lot from him

This sounds absolutely amazing. Metallica is the only band I like. People tell me to listen to other genres and they get annoyed when I listen to or play metallica all the time. But to me no other band has the soul that metallica did and still does.

Man... I play bass with my fingers, but that doesn't exactly make me better than Jason. Who cares about how someone is more comfortable playing the bass one way or another, its the creativity and how your style fits as a musician that makes you a good player. Cliff had his style by the knuckle which is why we know him as one of the greats. Now stop fucking talking bollocks and go find a Cliff Burton video if thats all your going to go on about.
