It snows in New Mex too... Dont let the people make you think its just dirt. It rains and it even has vedars, pines, spruce and of course sacred cacti and other shrubs..Nothing compares..period. She made innovation reality.
Of course, I have know her work all of my adult life. And yet, each time I 'see' it,
I know I see it differently. What powerful abstractions of shapes, color. What landscapes...I so appreciate her for her candor and independence and making it
easier for women to become artists. Wherever you are, Georgia O'Keefe, I hope you are still creating...
This is a terrific video about her. Thanks for putting it on youtube. I really enjoyed it. I wish I could have known her. She was beautiful!!! What an amazing person. No wonder so many people love her art. This video was so incredibly special because of her age. She is an inspiration and I really appreciate the video.
Very good. As I was looking at some roses my husband asked me to photograph, something happened as I looked closer and closer through my lens. To my great surprise, Georgia's spirit came through.
This is a truly inspiratuional artist, walking talking, and a very able artist at 98. She is so significant, I am studying her for my GSCE art final piece. I love the skulls and flowers, and how she created them from "artificial flowers" and a "barrel of bones." Inspirational woman, rest in peace Georgia.
What an amazing woman...artist. A strong & free spirit. I just love her & her art. She reminds me of my 97 year old grandmother (still living, thank God). I have been to New Mexico. It's an amazing & wondrous place to visit. Don't think I could live there...but the sunsets fill the sky for miles & they are the most brilliantly colored, I think, in the world. Just beautiful!
I have so much respect for Georgia O'Keeffe. I admired her determination and love for her art works.
Such a brave woman .it takes courage in a harsh environment like that creating wonderful paintings the way she did. I love her work about Lauren’s tree. Looking at the sky from bottom of the tree, through branches..great view and unusual work.
I never knew she painted from artificial flowers .. I thought they were real, they look so natural and outstanding.
lol i hav to pretend to be her for a class project. its gonna b hard to capture her attitude but im still glad i got the part. PS watch the movie its new and really good
I remember seeing this video when I visited new Mexico in July 2009! It was a good video and I especially remember the music. I can close my eye and be back in the theater in new Mexico again! Great times..... Great times!
Thanks for posting this. Is amazing to see her speak, reflect and move around this beautiful landscape that surrounded her during the final chapter of her life.
Even at 92 she was extremely sharp. What an extraordinary woman.
If you read her letters and other writings, you'll find that she could also be quite a scrapper, and I say good for her. She says she tells people to stay away..Im exiled (self-imposed because of health) from my NM right now, but when i get back, the only way they will take me out is when they throw me in a pine box and stick me on a funeral pyre and throw my ashes off Sandia Crest or leave my body for thebirds to pick.
I've watched this video so many times. I find it relaxing. Georgia, you are an inspiration to so many women artists including myself. I love your spirit and may it live on.
vid of Georgia's actual words during this interview w/ her @ her 92 yrs! Enlightening - re this remarkable artist & woman ! When viewing this I find such similarites in her looks & her viewpoints on what makes up her genius rather similar to
those of Frank Lloyd Wright (an architectural genius of the same era) - tho O'Keefe never had the egotistic thought of her worth - while Wright excelled at thinking himself the best!
what the hell is your problem??? Georgia O'keffee broke down many barriers for female artists, and she has created many wonderful paintings. If you dont like her why are you watching this video?
so that I could tell every single middle-aged art wannabe how awful she actually is. For one she was quite obviously a closeted lesbian all of the critics agree and when asked about her work looking like vaginas (which all of it does) she said that it was the audience that had it wrong...what a stubborn skank. Personally I don't care for women artists that just paint flowers and landscapes, I care about the artist (gender not involved) that takes risks with their art.
Ok, thats fine, you dont like O'Keeffe but I still dont understand why you would go out of your way and watch a video on the women only to insult her artwork and her self. the things you say are true, she was obviously a lesbian or at least bi-sex. and theres no denying that some of her artwork looks like parts of the female anatomy, but many people belive she showed objects in different ways and why ruin it for them.
i don't know why people like her so much...she is unorignal and a bitch...awful human being. It doesn't constitute sas when you crticiize art like Rothko's that her small mind couldn't perceive.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
yeh really creative nothing like using flowers as symbols for life in paintings...oh wait that was done 500 years ago...she is not a real modern artist. My mind is not small the fact that she could place negative feelings on Mark Rothko's beautiful, deeper bodies of work just is a testment to how academicly brainwashed she was.
@chandru1103 i have to disagree. she was not academically brainwashed - quite the contrary. school actually prevented her from creating the works of art she is known for today. she even admitted, at one point, that she didn't see the point in painting - she felt people in the past did it better than she could. fortunately, she didn't give up. her work is completely original and her ability to turn ordinary objects into extraordinary pieces still astonishes me along with millions of others.
@chandru1103 to insult those who appreciate her work shows not only your arrogance but inability to appreciate innovative art. thomas kinkade is not my cup of tea, but i'm not going to insult those who appreciate his work
When she first moved from the East to Texas, to teach school, she wrote a friend, "Tonight, I walked into the sunset." She loved the Texas sky. She said the West was her and she was the West. So inspiring.
yes everything is different here, and amen, I hope too that no one else sees the enchantment here and I hope they all stay away too :) hehe...this lady has a spiritual eye that few have :)
She was so right, most people think of the Deserts of New Mexico as dry dead land, its so far from that, its the most Spiritual Beautiful land Ive ever seen. Truly, The Land of Enchantment :)
Georgia - such a sweet name, such a sweet lady ( in fact, it's the first time I got to see this wonderful artist in "live"). She reminds my so much of my late great grandma with her complexion, her look, her manners:) Wow! And I love her landscapes, her flowers with an incredible style, innovative and incomparable synthesis of abstraction, impression, spiritual experience, abstraction. Awesome! Thanks for posting!

I just came back from Santa Fe and went to the Georgia O'Keefe Museum, It was a magical place. She is an icon and a wonderful human. Thank you for this posting!
quantumsignature: Not sure about 'kind'! But, she was a one-of-a-kind person who travelled her own road, spoke her own mind, truly *lived* life to its fullest; and, along that way gave the world the incredible gift of art unsurpassed with such passion & beauty!
When you have a gift to share with the world it shows in so many ways. With Georgia she had a strong personnality and a clear sense of direction. The kindness I refer to is the art and the expression of life shared with others in the scope of her life.

artist & woman - and oft misunderstood, especially, her "flower" & "bones"
paintings! Georgia was/and is one of the greatest (imo & others) artists
of all time! And, she was headstrong & tenacious to the end of her life
at the age of 98 Yrs on 3/06/1998 - but, what a "TRUE" artist & spirit!
To kinda get to know this woman better - Jeffery Hogreff's "The Life Of
An American Legend" is a *must*!
