Well said" hooverhasit " well said ,This man along with "Chester " eased a spirit into my own soul that's hard to explain . A pure blessing , you'll hear me soon enough.
god bless you hubert. you were on my bucket list. i missed the biscuit and had a feeling i would not get another chance to see you for the first time in years. sadly i was right. fortunately you left behind a plethora of good music to sustain your fans in your absence.
Hubert just left us alone, he just died In december, but thanks to Mick Jagger and Keith Richard , they could afford the funeral's and we thanks them because we couldn't afford it, because he didn't die on sea but on land. And we will miss him so... The Bluesmen's of the seven sea's. And it would have kill us just to drop him overboard.
maybe somebody could ask who is the skeleton at the drums...well he's Levon Helm, a real musical master, The Band drummer and singer and formal member of the Hawks and Dylan's band in 1966 (during the Australian part of the famous booing tour '66)
@freejazztampa Sounds like David Johannsen. I know he played with Hubert fot a time. Johansen also sang (and still does) for the New York Dolls. he does in fact sing a good blues voice! check out his album David Johansen and the Harry Smiths for a bunch of old blues standards.
Howlin' Wolf's music is extremely difficult to transcribe and play. There's always two or three distinct parts harmonizing together, and everything is ridiculously syncopated.
@TripleCLUTCH hey man,I knew hubert in the 70,s and wolf paid him 200 bucks a show.I called wolf and set up a concert in St.Louis,he did me a favor and played the gig for 1200 and once the promoter had the paper he cut me out.I called Hubert in Chicago when Wolf died and he was pissed but watta ya do?But that,s what he paid hubert.$200 a show.
Sumlin is a master bluesman. He is also a real gentleman, very modest and unassuming.I was lucky enough to meet him last winter. He can still play his ass off, too! A National Treasure.
I met Mr Sumlin a month ago. It is the musical highlight of my life. He was a true gentalman. I know his nephew Gary Martin who is a great musician and entertainer. Gary's band the Heavenly Blues where playing and when Mr Sumlin entered the room the packed house gave him a standing ovation. Even though he was heading for the airport he made time to sign autographs and have pictures taken. I was in absolute awe of the man and felt like a little kid meeting his hero. Thanks for the music MR SUMLIN
Here on "Evil" Hubert gets that KILLER vibrato that was his trademark. What a sound this guy has! Raw, dirty and supernaturally chilling especially when he uses reverb as well.
Freaking amazing! Hubert is really a light house! His touch is unmatched and when he's inspired and in the groove he cannot be matched. Amazing! No wonder Wolf saw the talent in him.
goodfoo; That's so true. Also on "Tail Dragger" and a song called "Neighbors". Hubert's spooky guitar tone used to send chills up my spine ..his sound was years ahead of time. Matt 'Guitar' Murphy had a similar spooky sound when he was with Memphis Slim in the late 50s except Matt used a Gibson-ES 345. I think (?) Hubert used a Les Paul for those legendary Wolf records. I could be wrong though.
HenfieldWill; It could be a Goldtop Les Paul with P-90 pickups. P-90s, being single coil, sound abit like Strats. But there are early photos with him playing everything from Fenders to Kays to cheap Jap guitars. Whatever he plays he still acheives a unique sound.
just an american gem !!! in every sense of the word ! I'm sure Hubert wasn't perfect, but I am sure he has given this world much more than we could ever give him. We should all express our love for him while he is with us now, and not waiting til he's gone to recognize this true pioneer and gentle soul.
Hell I'd take Hubert's imprefections in my playing anyday! Hendrix is known to have sited Hubert as one of his influences. Sad that this great guitarist is only known by a few who really appreciate good music. The guy is a truly gem as you state!
Why only ten seconds of "Hidden Charms"? Hubert played the single greatest up-tempo blues guitar solo of all time on the original version of that song.
hubert is one of the greatest blues guitarists-musicians and he created one of the most unique guitar sounds ever. he is also a truly wonderful human being. everyone of the english blues guitarist who are now famous and rich were "schooled" by hubert. clapton especially took a lot of hubert's signature style and riffs. hubert is a treasure of black american culture. he is also almost totally overlooked and ignored which is unforgivable.
DITTO!!!!.....I've made it my lifes mission to cop(steal) all the licks and rythms of Hubert. Breaks my heart that this guy isn't a household name. Never met the guy but I love him just the same because of were his playing takes me.
Hubert has a much wider pallette of melodies and phrases than other blues guitarists like B.B.King, Buddy Holly etc., who keep repeating a few notes throughout the song.
Hubert is one of the real players....great touch, the real ones usually played with only their fingers, no picks-sure as hell no flatpickin' fools among them!
hey did u hear the interview with hurbert. he said he useto us a pick then wolf told him not to use it. Hubert kept using it and wolf fired him. Then he stoped using a pick and wolf took him back:I)
