Remember, if you read the books, you can calculate master chiefs age when he begins the first fight on Halo, and after Halo prior to Halo 2, he is I think in his 30's, remember also that spartan 3's are younger because they are a new more inexpensive version, the 2's that remain besides master chief are his age, that's the reason why in halo reach, your spartan sounds in his or her 25 range while in halo 3 your spartan sounds older and stronger(to me).

Also Noble Six dies in the end of reach so if that was mastercheif there would be no Halo-Halo 3.

And the only major differences in the book and game are in the books only the Spartan-IIs help defend reach with the marines and ODSTs. Also in the books MC already had cortana and the pillar of autumn was in space already.
