Im really proud of York Minster, the look, charm, and size of the place is mesmorising, and its humbling to know it will be standing long after I am gone, my 5 year old neice thought it was a princess palece, and its where all the good people live,
York is the See of the Archbishop of York. In addition to being a minster, it is, per se, a Cathedral... (All it would have needed was a Bishop - York goes one better!)
i) York has a Minster and as such it isn't a Cathedral. There's a weird thing about the definition of Minster v. Cathedral. A Minster is generally of the Collegiate Church genus.
ii) York is the second largest Mediaeval Gothic building after Chatres Cathedral in France.
Whilst we're being pedantic about the definition of Cathedral, here's another piece of pedantry. York Minster is the largest MEDIEVAL gothic cathedral in Northern Europe. Liverpool Anglican is supposedly bigger, and it's gothic, but not medieval. (It's nothing like as beautiful either!)

It's still a Cathedral, actually. 'Minster' refers to the fact that it used to be a Monastic church (like an Abbey). Westminster Abbey is an Abbey Church, and not a Cathedral at all.
I suspect the Ture Title is The Cathedral Minster of Saint Peter, York. It is a Cathedral because it has a Cathedra inside (the Bishops throne, or Archbishop for York) I think that an Abbey or Minster requires a Monastic background, but you should know the ruins of Saint Marys Abbey lie less then a stones throw from York Minster, Seems strange to have two Monastic Foundations within visual distance of each other...even if one is inside, and the other outside the Walls.
Yes it is. It has a Cathedra inside so the ArchBishop has a Throne to sit on. The Chair is what makes the building a Cathedral. Probably The Cathedral Minster of Saint Peter, York (Peter is who the Minster is Dedicated to...hence the Ikon of the Crossed Keys, which is a monogram reference to Christ giving Peter the Keys of Heaven)

looks like a mix of Ripon's and Durham's cathedrals.
same lay out in some ways.
Though pretty much all of them have the same cross layout.

I think the story about the organist falling to his death is almost certainly a fairy tale.

I never knew the difference! When is a Minster a Minster and a Cathedral a Cathedral? What about West Minster Abbey? Or is it Westminster Abbey?
