"Gypsy sound"? as so stupidly stated earlier. Well there are other racially derogatory terms that you could say. Al Di Meola Is a Genius. Mr. Gambale is good. If it was not for "Gypsy sound" there would not have evolved such a things as jazz and the Latin music. Flamenco can in terms that you would understand "kick your ass". Al Di Meolas' music is vibrant and not generic. He still looks the same. The other two Italian guitar heroes Satriani and Gambale are bald.
You really cant compare Al Dimeola with Frank. To me, Al's tone blows Franks tone away bar none end of story. Frank is a great player. But this video his tone is garbage. I dont care about harmonics if the tone is sloppy like this!
Frank plays figure 8's around Al DiMeola. I want to hear intervals and arpeggios in the lines. Al just plays scales up and down at a million miles an hour-YAWN!
Right. Al Was WAY before Gambale . DiMeola is one of Gambale's influences . DiMeola can substitute some very interesting scales and actually plays using intervals quite a bit . There is a version of DiMeola playing JJ Flash on You Tube. he rips.
@McMinnManiac - dimeola doesnt have a fraction of the harmonic knowledge that frank has and doesnt substitute. frank does. al uses the same 3-4 scales all the time cant play over real jazz changes without resorting to his gyspy sound all the time. his tunes are simple harmoncally. frank surpased al LONG ago. al is a novelty technique speed player and cant play real jazz. frank has the harmonic chops to go with his awesome speed+technique, but it's not all he has going for him, unlike with al.
I don't think you can call it struggling, but I admit I rather hear someone like Henderson with great tone and phrasing over a vamp like this, and that Frank shines more over chord progressions.
Man, the fusion fans are the worst! Man, you guys are funny as hell. I would like to put together a youtube fan jam session. All of these "know it all" guys would probably sound like crap!
This song is meant be easy listening and kind of dreamy, which in this short clip makes it seem boring. If you buy the album CAB2 you'll understand. There's a great theme in the beginning, and the rest i just easy listening soloing throughout the song. One of my all time favorites.
You're a tool even in your own retarded logic, MODES (plural) no more mystery, have a look at the changes in the solo to the opening song "high five", if the DVD was about playing modally that was a poor song choice.
Its not that he "struggles" with modes because I wish I could "struggle " like Frank does, it that his playing is geared more towards complex harmonic structure like all the great JazzRockFusion guys. Sixtyfour bars later you start letting your fingers do the walking...its the nature of the beast!
You're probably right, jazz is harmonic by nature and things like this lack any underlying harmony to work with, but it is still possible to make a vamp interesting ala Corea, hancock, Coltrane, Davis, and I think Frank lacks that ability.
He uses modes just fine! The problem is that he's not using them in the fashion that you perceive as "normal" or approve of! Your personal preferences stand in the way of your reasoning here. Modes are simply an improvisational tool. There is no rule that says you should be able to pick them out and readily identify them as a critical listener. There all sorts of possibilities beside the standard noob ass Rock application of modes isn't there?
You call this shit struggling? You must be accustom to listening to wankers that just play endless streams of 16th notes throughout their solos and play the same old dorian mode shit over again! There is a concept called "phrasing" you know! There is also this little symbol in music called a "rest"! Learn before you speak!
Let me rephrase, what I meant is "Frank struggles to make vamps sound interesting". D you really think this is on a par with the other 99% of his music? Stop being a fanboy and jumping at every critisism, Frank isn't god and I'm sure he's the first to admit it.
Great! You hit it on the head. It is the inability of players (I hesitate to call them musicians) to use "rests" that shows how limited their approach is. Imagine Wayne Shorter's playing without space.
Prandtastic has got the idea right....These guys have amazing skills which they ably display here, but the tune itself is really uninspired. Dat's all.
No thanks. This just isn't my cup of tea. Not saying it's awful or anything. Virgil, Frank and Bunny are all monster players, but this tune is seeeeriously limp.
I am kind of seeing what you are saying Mr. Wolf. This songs seems kind of flat and 2-D, not much depth. It seems redolent of a jam. I'm not saying it is bad or anything. It's kind of boring in terms of a song. But FG is blistering as usual and that is a sweet bass line. But it doesn't speak as much as it could. We'll just say it has potential.
Frank indeed is amazing, as always. But you just can't go wrong anytime you have Bunny and Virgil playing together. For me, those two just go way beyond...
Frank is truly amazing, I have seen numerous times with CCEB and with Rick and Ray at La Ve Lee Jazz Club in Studio City, California, can't get any better than this for guitar players. Keep on playin' Frank.
thanks bro for getting these monsters to visit. Just a glimpse of the magnificent Frank Gambale in full flight, I was there that night and these guys smoked the shit out of Hyderabad

Gambale is a fat scientologist. I guess All that I'm saying is his fingers are too fat to play the right notes all the time.
