I've watched this wonderful video at least ten times over the past few days. Beautifully done, and I just adore Dan's music! He was one of a kind that's for sure!
I have fond memories of listening to this album with my momma. This came out when I was eight and listened to it with her a lot. She always liked this song. I've always liked Lovers In A Dangerous Time. The only version I can find on YouTube is the Bare Naked Ladies cover. It's just not the same. I'm really fond of Anastasia's Eyes and Blind To The Truth. Wish I could find those on YT. I would love to get this for me and Momma. Thanks for posting. Brought back great memories. ;)
Great vid... thanks so much for posting! I really like the pictures you chose. The lyrics of this song are so compelling... even though my family history is very different from what is described here, it makes me feel more connected to my ancestors when I hear it.
Would you be willing to post the song "Blind to the Truth" from this same album? That song is messed up on my old cassette tape and I can't find it anywhere online.
Whenever I need a song about anything in my life, I just go to Dan's music. He wrote about EVERYTHING that pertains to ALL aspects of our life. I found this song today when I received an e-mail from a long lost cousin doing a family tree on my Italian side. Lo and behold, Dan has a song! Awesome! Once again, thank you Beggarsgame!
Thanks, Donna...one of my all time faves! He played this in Peoria the first time I heard it...wasn't recorded yet--he was just "trying it out" on us that night! Now, Dan is a "Forefather", too....
This song so reminds me of my Grandparents. They came here with almost nothing, but they worked hard and made a life. They made sure we all knew what a great country this is.
I've always loved this song. Both of my Grandfathers went through Ellis Island. They both worked very hard to become true Americans. I have a proud heritage.
Great song, my hobby is genealogy and I love history. This song really fits into my love of these two hobbies. There never be a song writer or voice like Dan. Wish we could have had him longer.
This song means a lot to me. Being of Scandinavian descent myself it has special meaning, but more so that it reminds us who we are and how we got here and all the sacrifices people made for us years before us to get us to where we are now. We take it all to much for granted. Least we forget the words of this song... "We all become forefathers by and by..."
Exotic, that may all be true, but you are woefully short-sighted if you don't realize how the poor are treated in other countries. Try some Latin American countries, the Near and Far East, and Africa. Complain about that because it is much, much worse once you learn about it. Have some gratitude that you are an American and don't be spoiled.

At frame 0:20 you can see how the passengers were mistreated. They were densely packed onto the ship. Their first taste of America in overcrowding and usury. They were likely charged for passage to the New Masonic Land of America. They were sleeping on the deck. The conditions on the ship were inhumane. This is their first hint that capitalism and the Free World aren't free. There's a high price to pay for being "American." Abuse is the way of the land.
I really enjoyed this song and the old photos. It's great to pay to tribute to the everyday men, women and children that left their lives behind to come to a new land in the hopes of finding freedom and a chance to prosper. Thanks to them for starting this great nation and I hope that we can keep it going.

Diverse,I enjoyed the video, but the PROPAGANDA at the end is just that! As a 56 yr. young raw foodist vegan, I will NEVER suffer from any dis-ease. I haven't had a sniffle in 11 years, and I drink, and sometimes smoke ciggies. YUK!!! lol Stop shoving DEAD ANIMAL CARCASSES into yer yaps, and you will also find unlimited health. ALL of these charities are CROOKED!!!
thx for an additional information about Dan himself; this is a quite new for me and may be it is an explanation of the source for not so American Dan's sadness and sentimentality, I mean the midnight sun.
Thank you so much for this...you did a beautiful job. This is one of my favorites. So many of Dan's songs are "my favorites" The pictures you used in your video make me think of my own family's journey from Ireland, Italy, and Holland. People came here, leagally, honestly, and worked hard their whole lives. Didn't mean to get political...thank you again this...Michele
Another wonderful song from Dan. The lyrics are beautiful; the video goes with the lyrics perfectly. Dan's unique voice cannot be mistaken. Thank you for posting this. I abslutely love it. Perfect!
As everyone else has said, this is beautifully done. Dan could always paint a musical picture - the photos here just emblish his art. A superb montage, BG.
the oil lamp and the grave yard scene with the crosses? thank you so much for all the videos, where we can go every day and get to see him perform and listen to his music. you are keeping him and his legacy alive and that is the greatest gift you can do for him, and for us Dan Fans. I miss him so much. He is in my thoughts every single day. I go to his web site and look at all the pictures of him especially the ones Jean has so lovingly posted there for us to see and read about.
This is much more moving with the faces--the emotions and struggles come alive and you really feel it. Just like Dan, you really know the language to talk to the heart, Donna. This says so much. Thanks again, for another effort to be cherished.
Thanks, Donna, for another great video! I love this song and the video is very well done. I'm wearing my pin too. That was a nice way to end the video.
Donna, this is one of my all time favorite Dan songs...well, they all are, but this one in particular. You've done such a wonderful, beautiful job and captured the essence so well. Thank you so much!
Wonderful job. I remember sitting in the audience during his stop in Dallas for Greetings From the West. Wish I could turn back time. I have my pin too!
it was such a wonderful and sad too video of people landing in america, with hope for a better life.the land of the free eh? dan you sang a wonderful song here and now i guess your singing with the angels,an angel on earth,an angel in heaven r.i.p.
