Yes, these are amazingly good sounding preamps. There's a great cult following for them and several mods available too. Mine is stock and I actually paid about $400 for it (more than I should have paid, but I really wanted one and bought the next one that came up on ebay). I love the tone this thing gives, even with a solid-state power amp!
The MP-1 did not cost the same as a car from that period.
Go to the ADA MP-1 page on adadepot dot com. There are links to guitar magazine articles from 1988 reviewing the MP-1 (glowingly!).
The MSRP is given as $699.95.
People still sell these for as much as $200 or even more. It has amazing value retention compared to other gear in the same original price range from the same year.
There are quite a few around; if they were more rare, they would fetch more.
