  • he does alot of interesting things here

  • This is the best version!!!

  • what a bad ass

  • 1:20 is video editing golden moment.

This is a wonderful performance. It seems so effortless for Katsaris.

  • @makis4ever12345 maki can you take your "witty" comments out of here please because people care more about katsaris than your impotent skills on music. And let me explain it to you in greek since your nation is bankrupt the same as your comments are. Ta kouvadakia sou kai se alli paralia. maskara.

  • esibizionista XD

  • I do not mind a pianist's body language. As a pianist myself, I sometimes do that. The reason why is because sometimes making music is hard to not move around and make faces when you are going through a difficult passage or playing a part where you love the most... I don't know... I think this pianist has substance in his playing... which is increasing rare among pianists today... I like him... and I think he is a great pianist... with a combination of intellect, humor, strength, and emotions.

  • Best interpretation of this is Glenn Gould.

  • @Dan474834 Gould??? You are kidding,right?

  • @callasnuts It's called sarcasm lol...

  • Yuck

  • Katsaris makes it look so easy! Beautifully played.

  • a great pianist, a rare find.. with temperament and commitment to the composer and his intent.. not to mention having a flawless technique in service of the music!

  • Comment removed

  • Il ressemble à Beethoven hahahahahaha!!!!!!!!!!!

  • On dirait du Boulez ............ !!!!!

  • i realllllly love him

  • lol his face is so dramatic

  • Comment removed

  • @FedeKris Nope. It's music, so he can express it however he wants - whichever way he desires to and he'll be right every time. You too. Me also, and everyone else. Cheers and long live music, just because it sounds good.

  • @FedeKris: Yes, but I go as far to say that he is a modern version of Cortot and perhaps the only complete "Romantic" today; like Cortot, there definitely is this wild, MAD element of his playing. This is NOT to say that I like it, however

  • This is very new and personal. Very good to know.

  • 3:26 וYou will pay dearly after the concert

  • did this really get that many dislikes because of how much people can't stand that he's completely toying with a piece that has tortured and frustrated to no end all those dislikers?

  • @trtnec yup. he is even toying with rachmaninof 3rd :) he drives people crazy

  • I watched it 100th times and still enjoying me

  • Cyprien is the best chopin player without a doubt. He can express chopin better than everyone else. You should really watch the whole dvd of memorian of chopin..

  • Cocaine is one hell of a drug!...

  • @3:26 it looks like hes about to kill somebody lol...

  • Grande Katsaris...Grandioso!!!!

  • if he didn't play so well, he could have been a scientist

  • After Argerich this man is the most interesting pianists .What he says and how is always so surprising.Maybe all great techniqued artists could do this but they never have his imagination.everything is new with him.I'd walk n the snow to hear him.Wish he toured more often or made records! He was fabulous n the 80's wheni first became aware of him.Outshone almost everyone!!!

  • @makis4ever12345 - i would love to hear you play! let me know when - i always enjoy supporting my fellow musicians and good luck with the studies :)

  • Respond to this video... @makis4ever12345

i just don't follow where your argument's going...are you suggesting that all contemporary (and future) pianists should just pack up, submit, and concede to the immortals of the past?

you quite interestingly mention cziffra's name to your collection of piano heroes (and rightfully so) but then again i'm sure you already knew that your most disliked katsaris was criffra's protege, right? :)

  • @makis4ever12345 If you consider Martha Argerich a class BELOW Horowitz then that gives me a clear idea of your musical/pianistic knowledge. Opinion is neither right nor wrong, true, but it does give a lot of insight about a person! Richter's idea of having the lights off meant the point is to NOT consider the means of production, but the music itself. If you listen to this Katsaris performance WITHOUT watching and still don't like, then ok..but charlatan? i would love to hear you play! :)

  • ...my favorite kick was listening to this sonata vs. the image of the goose-stepping stormtroopers on the streets of Warsaw, from the Polanski film...it was, for me, the "stormtrooper sonata"...but now Mr.Katsaris has spoiled all this for me...he is quite a spoilsport, isn't he?..

  • @makis4ever12345

the sentiments of horowitz and richter may be valid, but katsaris, argerich, gould, etc. became the generation that has poked major holes in these theories. no matter how carefully one follows the score, it is virtually impossible to replicate any composer's music in its "purest" form. even richter (indeed, the greatest!) understood that audiences went to see/hear HIM play as much as (or more than) the music to be performed! few strayed further from the score than horowitz!

  • @makis4ever12345

i imagine he sells out a lot of his shows because he's a wizard who dominates the piano. if you were a true MUSIC appreciator, you would listen to what he does (not how he does it)... but the bonus is that live you get to see how much fun he has communicating with the music, his audience, the piano, and being a formidable entertainer (which is ultimately what being a musician is).

  • kinda looks like bruce willis xD with hair tho XD

  • he's over-romanticizing it. no fire

  • he's french !

  • ahahahahaha he is the man!!

  • This man has a perverted halo - over himself, and over this piece. This is the work of the serpent - the highlighting of the accents on the left-hand are sick... according to somebody, the left hand is not supposed to be accented; it makes circles.

  • He is so fun to watch! Some people may hate on facial expression while playing music, but I honestly have nothing against it. It gives us a window into the pianist's world. And at the end, he practically played the last note while standing up. He was like "i. am. DONE!" haha made me laugh really hard! Funny guy!

  • 1:20 - 1:22 LOL

  • look at his face while hes playing ,,funny

  • ...turns out Chopin was more of a "metal" man than generally supposed...the pianist's eyes turn demonic and the lower jaw moves sideways...Black Sabbath of a movement after all...

  • I wish i can play this music...

  • @ 3:26, he saw Justin Bieber in the audience

  • @hohohee1 q buiiiina jajajajaja

  • @hohohee1 Take your biber jokes and fuck off.

  • @Vesivian take your small cock and fuck me

  • @hohohee1 sorry, i'm not gay unlike you.

  • @hohohee1 Cracks me up

  • @hohohee1 lol

  • Somehow, I knew that Lang Lang would appear somewhere in the comments. I am just sitting over here shaking my damn head. People who make facial expressions are just being unique and showing their feelings. Music is as much an emotional experience as it is a technical experience and people should stop hating on pianists for the fact that they are giving us a glimpse of what is going on in their world and how they feel the music. It enhances the message...

  • @modelstatue honestly, they couldn't get into it if they didn't just let go and make whatever faces they wanted

  • phenomonal performance....and I really liked the genuine emotion shown in the facial expressions....great music is primarily an emotional experience after all....

  • Carnegie hall if I'm not mistaken?

  • @antione101 Paleis der schone kunsten its in belgium

  • that was a very interpretive and personal performance with great technique

  • 2:53 - genial emphasis on left hand. Still the best performance of Chopin Sonata (on the Earth)

  • @100of1000 If chopin was alive probably would say the same about this performance. Katsaris is exeptional genious. The world has not yet known this completely

  • If U know japanese anime "Star of Giants(Kyojin no Hoshi - 巨人の星)" U must watch this movie. zyjZ0tk3Aw8

  • This guy's hair = Beethoven meets Gene Simmons

  • what is he gazing at?

  • 4:35 I love how he stands up with the foot on the pedal

  • at 3:25 he's saying IMA KILLYA, extremely good interpretation haven't heard any I like more.

  • he's gly

  • where is he staring at?

  • I wonder how those people in the concert hall don't laugh at his face :D But this interpretation is one of my favorites!!!

  • Some of his faces truly are priceless.

  • Comment removed

  • This is amazing! Thanks. Is this at Carnegie Hall?

  • @pianogus Yup

  • It's a pity that the camera operator seemed to be focusing so much time on recording Cyprien Katsaris's facial expressions. I suppose some "purists" and

"pedagogues" will find things to fault in this performance, but I continue to find it the most interesting of all the performances of this movement I've come across. Katsaris never fails to bring out various voices that are generally are not brought out--if even noticed--by most other pianists. This is a pianist and performance to treasure.

  • I didn't know crusty the clown played piano... Haha, jokes aside, this is excellent

  • 0:12 Rohypnol placement face.

  • 3:26 - 3:29 XD

  • he looks like he cant believe what his hands are doing!

  • Ok he looks like a funny guy but he plays amazing piano! I would like to play like him this sonate!

  • ahahaha, that is funny! he needs a mirror on the other end of that piano a

    hahahah

  • This guy is obviously the best clown next to Lang Lang - Awful !!!

  • The editing in atrocious.

  • he reminds me of andrew zimmerman from the food show.

  • lol I can't take this guy seriuosly

  • @scout6686: Neither can we take the audience seriously...

  • @gc65531941 I can play this hbu?

  • I believe hes eating spaghetti napolitana with ketchup till around 1.30 and then he enjoys a mediterranean salad with few slices of cheese. At around 3.00 he eats the dessert which is a chocolate cake. After all these he chews a gum and finishes his AMAZING performance.

    That's all folks!

  • He is a technician!!!

  • Ah, those crafty inner voices; unconventional, surely, but certainly fresh. I love watching this guy shake "erudite" internet musicologists and theorists up.

  • @Yourenigma

  • @PionieriSimone

NO !

  • Nice facial expression ! He will win in the world MR Bean competition !

  • Great "Tempo Rubato" in Mr. Katsaris' playing in this last movement . Few pianists do this with Chopin's music which Chopin himself always did when he played. So saying Mr. Katsaris is playing this last movement in a "distorted way," as was said by "AkaMouTinn" is just plain ignorant of playing classical piano music.

  • @MoebiusTripper Oh really? And you heard Chopin do it this way? All we know of Chopin's rubato is what others have said about it. Not only are there no recordings, but the oldest person alive now could never even have met anyone who actually heard him play. So the only judgment that can be made is the difference between rubato, and *tasteless Liberace-like rubato" and this clearly falls into the latter category. It's like ham acting - silly and, yes, distorted.

  • @gtimny I knew you were going to say this. But I have read Chopin's own collected writings and he mentions playing his music using "Tempo Rubato." It is only "distorted" if one uses it in an exaggerated way. If one does not use it, then one will sound like any other pianist. It gives the music personality...A good example is the great Polish pianist, Padrewski. I will admit he took too much liberty with Tempo Rubato, but who is going to say to his face that he is playing Chopin wrong?

  • I would love to see a recording of only his face while playing this piece.

  • A full-scale epic idiot

  • @Selecter8 if you knew who you called idiot the you would know that you are an idiot. But hence an idiot never knows he is one.

  • @AkaMouTinn I do now who I called an idiot! He is a great pianist this indeed (which can be concluded from your defensive attitude) but his playing of this particular movement can be described as, let say, "distorted".

  • @Selecter8 Perhaps you can provide us with your insight as to what is "distorted" about this particular interpretation. Without substantiation, your critique is meaningless.

  • like Pink Panther, detective Cruso.

  • Where does he stare ?

  • where can i find the sheet music for this?

  • @Guns8000

    IMSLP

  • A genius!

  • LMAO! What was up with the picture in picture of him making that goofy face?

I can't read Japanese and this guy is sending me mad mad private messages. I'm Korean maybe you can translate all that he's written?

  • @scout6686 oh you are korean, so am i. actually, i didn't ask what does that sentence mean. i am asking why did you say that. i was raised in an english speaking country so obviously, i can at least speak basic english. by the way, your grammar is perhaps wrong, nor can 95% of the people looking at his page, dirty asian. • Troppo simpatico...artista puro !!!!

    Bravissimo!!!

  • what a truly brilliant performance yet again by maestro katsaris! this man is truly brilliant and it's unbelievable that he possesses an uncanny mixture of virtuosity and musicality, lol

but i have to ask..... what on earth did he play for the encore (at the very end of the clip after all his curtain calls)??? is there a video clip of that floating around anywhere?

  • 1:19 the popup window :D :D

  • @yahuui LOL

  • Genio. Uno dei pochi rimasti.

    Simone Pionieri

  • What enthusiasm. What a performance!

  • It was been "Live in..." where did he play ? help me

  • @100of1000 carenegie hall :D or however you spell it.

  • Does anyone else think this pianist resembles Mr. Bean?

  • ke faccia da pirla!

  • lol nice hair(: and good playing, im learning this song; need all the hearing of it i can get.

  • terrible.

  • I've seen / heard him a lot through YouTube. Thanks! He's a master. He "sees" what he is playing.

  • On robi chyba śmieszniejsze miny niż LangLang

He has much more funny face expresion than LangLang

  • Excellent!!!

  • did any of u see the movie "it" about a clown called pennywise?...well u know whats my point

  • grandissimo!e basta

  • And finally at 4:16 his expression shows how satisfied he is with his performance, a fact that makes the cadenza sound so effortless, as the PERFECT end to a PERFECT journey. Thus making the audience stunned from admiration through "erotic" attraction almost equal to having Chopin sitting next to him. "Eros" is a greek word which is not and cannot be translated into english. Its what makes us lean towards the divine. Chopin IS divine and katsaris shows it because he CAN.
