I do not mind a pianist's body language. As a pianist myself, I sometimes do that. The reason why is because sometimes making music is hard to not move around and make faces when you are going through a difficult passage or playing a part where you love the most... I don't know... I think this pianist has substance in his playing... which is increasing rare among pianists today... I like him... and I think he is a great pianist... with a combination of intellect, humor, strength, and emotions.

a great pianist, a rare find.. with temperament and commitment to the composer and his intent.. not to mention having a flawless technique in service of the music!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
This is a completely lack of respect towards Chopin. He should be aware of his unprofessional way of playing, because he has a reputation to mantain. He is putting himself before the composer and creates something horrible, even if he plays ´´all the keys and fast´´. That doesnt make you a pianist or an artist, that makes you an amateur.
@FedeKris Nope. It's music, so he can express it however he wants - whichever way he desires to and he'll be right every time. You too. Me also, and everyone else. Cheers and long live music, just because it sounds good.
@FedeKris: Yes, but I go as far to say that he is a modern version of Cortot and perhaps the only complete "Romantic" today; like Cortot, there definitely is this wild, MAD element of his playing. This is NOT to say that I like it, however
did this really get that many dislikes because of how much people can't stand that he's completely toying with a piece that has tortured and frustrated to no end all those dislikers?
Cyprien is the best chopin player without a doubt. He can express chopin better than everyone else. You should really watch the whole dvd of memorian of chopin..
After Argerich this man is the most interesting pianists .What he says and how is always so surprising.Maybe all great techniqued artists could do this but they never have his imagination.everything is new with him.I'd walk n the snow to hear him.Wish he toured more often or made records! He was fabulous n the 80's wheni first became aware of him.Outshone almost everyone!!!
i just don't follow where your argument's going...are you suggesting that all contemporary (and future) pianists should just pack up, submit, and concede to the immortals of the past?
you quite interestingly mention cziffra's name to your collection of piano heroes (and rightfully so) but then again i'm sure you already knew that your most disliked katsaris was criffra's protege, right? :)
@makis4ever12345 If you consider Martha Argerich a class BELOW Horowitz then that gives me a clear idea of your musical/pianistic knowledge. Opinion is neither right nor wrong, true, but it does give a lot of insight about a person! Richter's idea of having the lights off meant the point is to NOT consider the means of production, but the music itself. If you listen to this Katsaris performance WITHOUT watching and still don't like, then ok..but charlatan? i would love to hear you play! :)
...my favorite kick was listening to this sonata vs. the image of the goose-stepping stormtroopers on the streets of Warsaw, from the Polanski film...it was, for me, the "stormtrooper sonata"...but now Mr.Katsaris has spoiled all this for me...he is quite a spoilsport, isn't he?..
the sentiments of horowitz and richter may be valid, but katsaris, argerich, gould, etc. became the generation that has poked major holes in these theories. no matter how carefully one follows the score, it is virtually impossible to replicate any composer's music in its "purest" form. even richter (indeed, the greatest!) understood that audiences went to see/hear HIM play as much as (or more than) the music to be performed! few strayed further from the score than horowitz!
i imagine he sells out a lot of his shows because he's a wizard who dominates the piano. if you were a true MUSIC appreciator, you would listen to what he does (not how he does it)... but the bonus is that live you get to see how much fun he has communicating with the music, his audience, the piano, and being a formidable entertainer (which is ultimately what being a musician is).
This man has a perverted halo - over himself, and over this piece. This is the work of the serpent - the highlighting of the accents on the left-hand are sick... according to somebody, the left hand is not supposed to be accented; it makes circles.
He is so fun to watch! Some people may hate on facial expression while playing music, but I honestly have nothing against it. It gives us a window into the pianist's world. And at the end, he practically played the last note while standing up. He was like "i. am. DONE!" haha made me laugh really hard! Funny guy!
...turns out Chopin was more of a "metal" man than generally supposed...the pianist's eyes turn demonic and the lower jaw moves sideways...Black Sabbath of a movement after all...
Somehow, I knew that Lang Lang would appear somewhere in the comments. I am just sitting over here shaking my damn head. People who make facial expressions are just being unique and showing their feelings. Music is as much an emotional experience as it is a technical experience and people should stop hating on pianists for the fact that they are giving us a glimpse of what is going on in their world and how they feel the music. It enhances the message...
phenomonal performance....and I really liked the genuine emotion shown in the facial expressions....great music is primarily an emotional experience after all....
@100of1000 If chopin was alive probably would say the same about this performance. Katsaris is exeptional genious. The world has not yet known this completely
It's a pity that the camera operator seemed to be focusing so much time on recording Cyprien Katsaris's facial expressions. I suppose some "purists" and
"pedagogues" will find things to fault in this performance, but I continue to find it the most interesting of all the performances of this movement I've come across. Katsaris never fails to bring out various voices that are generally are not brought out--if even noticed--by most other pianists. This is a pianist and performance to treasure.
I believe hes eating spaghetti napolitana with ketchup till around 1.30 and then he enjoys a mediterranean salad with few slices of cheese. At around 3.00 he eats the dessert which is a chocolate cake. After all these he chews a gum and finishes his AMAZING performance.
Ah, those crafty inner voices; unconventional, surely, but certainly fresh. I love watching this guy shake "erudite" internet musicologists and theorists up.
NO !
Great "Tempo Rubato" in Mr. Katsaris' playing in this last movement . Few pianists do this with Chopin's music which Chopin himself always did when he played. So saying Mr. Katsaris is playing this last movement in a "distorted way," as was said by "AkaMouTinn" is just plain ignorant of playing classical piano music.
@MoebiusTripper Oh really? And you heard Chopin do it this way? All we know of Chopin's rubato is what others have said about it. Not only are there no recordings, but the oldest person alive now could never even have met anyone who actually heard him play. So the only judgment that can be made is the difference between rubato, and *tasteless Liberace-like rubato" and this clearly falls into the latter category. It's like ham acting - silly and, yes, distorted.
@gtimny I knew you were going to say this. But I have read Chopin's own collected writings and he mentions playing his music using "Tempo Rubato." It is only "distorted" if one uses it in an exaggerated way. If one does not use it, then one will sound like any other pianist. It gives the music personality...A good example is the great Polish pianist, Padrewski. I will admit he took too much liberty with Tempo Rubato, but who is going to say to his face that he is playing Chopin wrong?
@AkaMouTinn I do now who I called an idiot! He is a great pianist this indeed (which can be concluded from your defensive attitude) but his playing of this particular movement can be described as, let say, "distorted".
@Selecter8 Perhaps you can provide us with your insight as to what is "distorted" about this particular interpretation. Without substantiation, your critique is meaningless.
@scout6686 oh you are korean, so am i. actually, i didn't ask what does that sentence mean. i am asking why did you say that. i was raised in an english speaking country so obviously, i can at least speak basic english. by the way, your grammar is perhaps wrong, nor can 95% of the people looking at his page, dirty asian. (where is your are and s? looking at this page, are dirty asians.)
@scout6686 i don't see a reason why my english is bad? can you explain? i even got first prize in debate in singapore. the sentence you wrote doesn't make sense so that is why i wrote what does it mean by? look at your sentence? 95% of the people looking at this page dirty asians.. the sentence totally doesn't make sense
what a truly brilliant performance yet again by maestro katsaris! this man is truly brilliant and it's unbelievable that he possesses an uncanny mixture of virtuosity and musicality, lol
but i have to ask..... what on earth did he play for the encore (at the very end of the clip after all his curtain calls)??? is there a video clip of that floating around anywhere?
And finally at 4:16 his expression shows how satisfied he is with his performance, a fact that makes the cadenza sound so effortless, as the PERFECT end to a PERFECT journey. Thus making the audience stunned from admiration through "erotic" attraction almost equal to having Chopin sitting next to him. "Eros" is a greek word which is not and cannot be translated into english. Its what makes us lean towards the divine. Chopin IS divine and katsaris shows it because he CAN.
he does alot of interesting things here

@scout6686You were not able to learn human nature at a university.
But you seem to have been able to learn words to curse a person.

scout6686 1 year ago
@scout6686 oh you are korean, so am i. actually, i didn't ask what does that sentence mean. i am asking why did you say that. i was raised in an english speaking country so obviously, i can at least speak basic english. by the way, your grammar is perhaps wrong, nor can 95% of the people looking at his page, dirty asian. (where is your are and s? looking at this page, are dirty asians.)
sumimimi0 1 year ago

On robi chyba śmieszniejsze miny niż LangLang
He has much more funny face expresion than LangLang
obserwatar 1 year ago

And finally at 4:16 his expression shows how satisfied he is with his performance, a fact that makes the cadenza sound so effortless, as the PERFECT end to a PERFECT journey. Thus making the audience stunned from admiration through "erotic" attraction almost equal to having Chopin sitting next to him. "Eros" is a greek word which is not and cannot be translated into english. Its what makes us lean towards the divine. Chopin IS divine and katsaris shows it because he CAN.
