@hattieriding1 I agree, im 18 and i remember watching bits of it when i was little and i finally brought the DVD a few months back and watched it properly, i never ever knew that she died! Wished my mum told me! I was gutted!
@MidgetBuddie aww bless yeah im 18 too and watched it when i was little and then finally watched it properly 2 years, yeah same because that was the put off bit, as u now know its not really the happy ending always something bad happenes in these kind of films at the end x
@hattieriding1 Yes, that would have been great. Especially since she is probably the only person who would probably help Fagin in life, especially since in the song "Reviewing The Situation", Fagin sang that he would like to quit being a thief and get a job but felt he had nobody in life to help him and he knew nobody. However, maybe Nancy would have helped him get a job (at least in the Tavern where Nancy works as the Tavern singer where maybe Nancy could get Fagin a job as a bartender there)
i miss being nancy so much... at my old school, i was the oldest... now i'm the youngest and i'm in the ensemble again... and I miss getting to have parts like this. Ah well, work back up, i guess :p
I wish I had such a positive outlook on life. I mean, I have a pretty good life compared to hers. And yes, I do realise she is a fictional character...but u know what I mean!
haha the nancy and bet in this one act like my school production actors. they have to be best friends but bet was a small part and nancy secretly doesn't like her.... or maybe it's just me
@MrTonyInchpractice all the guys fell in love with nancy and all the girls fell in love with the artful doger :) now that I'm adult I can say I now find Bill Sykes completely hot :D
God, I watched this soooo much right before auditions for school play of Oliver. Oliver turned out kinda badly, so watching it now, a year later, is reminding me of when I didn't know what would happen and yeahhh... :(
does anyone think that this could be done again? I reckon hugh jackman would make an excellent bill sykes. especially with his background being in musicals.
Shani wallis didnt portray Nancy, she became the character, she eally brings me into the story with so much empathetic connection with her from her brilliant performance, without her, the movie would have still been okay, but she brought so much to it. Long live Shani Wallis
@JuanMacready Excuse me dear!!. It is an entirely British Film! with limited backing from the American dollar, including talent. And about as far from Hollwood as the average American.
A bit like the comment by JuanMcCready, I got the part of Sykes at the school production where my brother taught. I did not attend the school but I was all they had. He told me I was more like Dirk Bogard than Oliver Reed. Sykes is a psychopath and I think each one who played him from Lean's 1940s black & white (Robert Newton) to Polanski's (Jamie Foreman) including Reed captured the animal that was Sykes perfectly. I had to sing a solo as Sykes! I just could not see Reed doing that - did he?
When I was younger I was in this at a college and I always hung around with the guy who played Bill, he would give me piggyback rides :3 He was so nice
Your profile says you are 14 years old. About the right age to play Dodger but not to be positng videos of bikini girls plunging into swimming pools. Take it easy, sonny Jim.

I can't seem to find the Oom Pah Pah song anywhere on youtube, I mean the version from this movie (Or I could be blind or something). Can anyone help me out?
@pix042 Actually, I heard/read once that Dickens got the character of Nancy from a girl he worked in a factory with! His family was in bad debt, and in the poorhouse. He was a very young boy/teenager who worked in a shoe polish or (blacking in those days), and he walked to work with a girl like Nancy.
He based his character on her! He had an uncle who was a manager in the factory, and he would watch out for the boy. He needed the job to help get his family out of the poor house!
@loveoldsongs C. Dickens lived and worked among a lot of the characters he invented for his stories. Although many were wealthy, pretty people; a lot of them were from sad and seedy lifestyles and desperate situations! He drew them from everyday people he would see around him.
He would walk around and observe them as an adult. He'd see the boys working in poorhouses, people in bars, whole families living in the streets like many now!
i remeber going to the movies to see this flim when it 1st came out many years ago and i watch it form time to time now and its just as fresh as it was then
Nancy - listen - thats not actually a fine life, its probably more accurately described as a SHIT life......lets face it, ur a prostitute working for a crime lord who tempts children into a life of crime - furthermore ur with an aggressive alcoholic man who's solution to lifes problems is violence.
You should escape by ringing the Battered Womens Helpline...or alternatively go for the next XFactor auditions....
Obviously, Nancy, like all women (and men in relation to women) puts up with a rotten life out of love. I mean, she has life pretty tough, and yet, this is how she sees it! Everyone should be a bit like that!
