Bel canto means beautiful singing. Think of Verdi, belini, donzetti. It's a style that utilizes more control of air flow, more so than the American style which is more about bringing things forward. I've studied bel canto all my singing career. I'm lucky to have a teacher who studied with tebaldi.

@pianoman654 Over the years I've become accustomed to Handel being sung a certain way and this is not it. Years ago Handel was not sung this way; it's only been within the last few decades that the so called experts have decided anemic and wimpy is how Handel is to be sung. The context of the piece makes no difference to me; I want to hear a great voice in a great performance and that's it.

Wimpy, anemic, and boring. It's unfortunate that in the last 30 or 40 years this has become the standard way of singing Handel. Even John McCormack sang it with more balls than this.

My favorite tenor. I don't care much for singers from the Bel Canto tradition. I prefer German and British style tenors, where the onset of vibrato is gradual instead of sudden. John has some truly amazing interpretative skills. His trills are right on too.

@UncleTito72 in my opinion, not teaching/learning bel canto singing these days is terrible for vocal technique and health. i don't like the trend. it is interesting to note that the resurgence of bel canto singing in eastern european countries has proven successful, as those singers are rising up in droves.

Ainsley one of the best baroque tenors EVER. No one can sing Monteverdi's Orfeo like him. And here is marvelous, as usual.

John Mark Ainsley is fantastic. He and Richard Croft are my favorite tenors for Semele. Croft's DVD version of this aria has not made it to Youtube yet. They both have such a gorgeous darkish sound.

I love this guy's voice, which I just discovered a week ago -- on You Tube!! Who knew? I have to say, though, I felt there was way too much embellishment at the end for my taste. I felt it became a little self indulgent and took away from the simple beauty of this piece.
