They are obviously exaggerating some of the controversies about how behavior analysts work with clients, but a behavior analyst wouldn't even agree that by saying "Stop it" they can overcome their problems. Contingencies must be managed/altered and only then is there a potential to change behavior. Applied behavior analysis can really help people and its techniques have been empirically validated for a multitude of disorders and everyday life problems.
You know, it's sort of disgusting that people actually think this is a good form of therapy to administer to people. You can't just tell someone with legitimate emotional problems to "Deal with it" and expect everything to just fix itself. Believing such a method is useful is an affront to everything Psychologists have worked at for almost a century.
Whenever I have thoughts that i don't like, I shout STOP THAT SHIT!!!! or SHUT THE FUCK!!!!!! in my head over and over again until it stops. It works guys. Take control of your own brain!!! You've got to say it with passion though!
There's truth to this. The reason you think you a problem is because you think you have a problem. If you stop thinking about it, you will cease to have the problem. But it's in the nature of the mind to dwell incessantly in problems because it gives life to that which is false in you. Awakening to your true nature will give you the eyes to see the truth of this.
Oh, the world would be so much better if people could just grasp this. Seriously. Imagine that -- a therapist encouraging personal responsibility, common sense, and just pure simple living rationally.
THE SAD THING IS most modern psychiatrists are JUST LIKE THIS, except they use antidepressants instead of the words STOP IT! They don't care about WHY people are depressed or anxious, that all falls under the "WE DON'T GO THERE".

@abst14 The sad part is, it's kind of true for some things. I was afraid of driving for the longest time, but when I had to do it, I basically had to take the first step and "stop it." Which I did by taking my Father with me on Sunday mornings to local parking lots, using the signs and lines in them to help me figure out how to space the car. We also took his big suburban so I was extra careful.
So maybe "Stop it!" has some real merit in the therapeutic circuit!

although that is mostly true, i have to agree that TOO MUCH cussing can ruin a show. im not offended by cussing at all, but people that over use them in every sentence over and over can get annoying after a while. the only thing is, there are few shows that actually do that (that i know of), its mostly people in real life...

@rbddul15 I always saw the joke was on the counselor. Whenever I share my psychiatric problems with family, they tell me to "Stop it." There's no power in that command, and that's what this skit is making fun of. Real problems usually have deep root causes, and require a lot of work to overcome...I don't think the skit was meant to imply this type of approach could actually work! :)

@MagatsutheCalamity - a lot of the low-level comedy on TV (especially in the UK) is terrible because they rely so much on swear words such as you used ;-)

@morganfjp - A lot of the low-level comedy on TV is terrible because it relies on making blunt observations and stupid noises and faces. Swearing does not detract from it, and has nothing to do with it. If your sensibilities are so fragile that you are offended by words that people told you to be offended by, then that's no-one's fault but yours, and actually rather pitiful.

although that is mostly true, i have to agree that TOO MUCH cussing can ruin a show. im not offended by cussing at all, but people that over use them in every sentence over and over can get annoying after a while. the only thing is, there are few shows that actually do that (that i know of), its mostly people in real life...

@rbddul15 I always saw the joke was on the counselor. Whenever I share my psychiatric problems with family, they tell me to "Stop it." There's no power in that command, and that's what this skit is making fun of. Real problems usually have deep root causes, and require a lot of work to overcome...I don't think the skit was meant to imply this type of approach could actually work! :)
