I appreciate all of your hard work on these videos. It's eye-opening to see you discuss the kinesiology, biomechanics, and intent of each punch, kick, etc. Not only are you saying that proper positioning is strategic in a fight as well as more effective. Thanks again, and keep up the good work. I plan to get your DVDs.
It's great that you know how to get athletes to keep their hands up. I seen moron coaches yell "Keep your hands up" and they think that the more they yell the faster it would help.
Do you think the reason we drop our hands when we kick is because it lowers the centre of gravity and makes it easier to balance? Keeping the arms up probably requires more balance, that's why it would surprise people. I wonder if kicking with hands overhead, or maybe hugging a medicine ball, might help with that?
Quick question. When I throw a front kick, my supporting leg's foot turns outward and doesn't point forward. How do I correct this? Or is this supposed to happen? Say my kicking leg is the left. Illustrating the direction each foot points:
My kick: |/
So in other words, my right foot tends to point slightly outwards instead of staying straight.
Exactly right. It's good that your heel turns in as you twist around the ball of your foot. That allows you to engage your hip more and adds more thrust. .....ElasticSteel...what Martial Arts do you study?

You rarely see a fighter who can keep his hands in the right place most of the time.

Very often hands are used to initiate the force transfer from the trunk to the leg, by using the arms to guide the movement of the trunk.
At the same time arms often counter balance the kick.
Shoulder strengthening plays an important role in controlling the position of the arms.

There is nothing wrong with the supporting leg being turned out. If anything it adds to distance and force transfer through the body.
Elasticsteel 3 years ago
That's an even better idea, didn't think of that.

ElasticSteel is based on Kinesiology and Biomechanics of the kick, rather then on any specific martial arts style.
