A patent is not a magical legal construct that allows a company to hide knowledge of how to create electric vehicles from the whole world. It's actually the opposite. And there has been no legal challenges from any oil companies towards companies creating electric vehicles. There is simply nothing so essential that goes into making an electric vehicle that could be patented and be successfully defended in the courts. The biggest problem for EVs has been the batteries and charging/refueling.
But the EV problem is slowly being improved as technology (from laptops and ipods no less) has made batteries powerful and cheap enough for long distance EV driving. That's why you are seeing more and more hybrid vehicles as well as emerging pure electric vehicle companies like Tesla Motors.

The core ideas of capitalism are found everywhere on star trek. Everyone is free to keep their individual achiements (economic and social). It's just that the society has evolved to the point where many people will freely give their help to others (freely, not forecefully). People are individually free and are free to be selfish but many choose not to be. Sounds a bit like where America is heading today. Ironically, by forcing people into a socialistic economic mindset, communist societies actually create pretty ruthless people who will do just that (people often do what they're not allowed to do -- especially adults). A patent is not a magical legal construct that allows a company to hide knowledge of how to create electric vehicles from the whole world. It's actually the opposite. And there has been no legal challenges from any oil companies towards companies creating electric vehicles. There is simply nothing so essential that goes into making an electric vehicle that could be patented and be successfully defended in the courts. The biggest problem for EVs has been the batteries and charging/refueling.

The themes were not only was he a communist, but he was anti-Trotsky, because Brainy always messed things up whenever he got power. I don't know whether Peyo was a commie or not, but I do know he's Belgian and the original cartoon was Les Schtroumpfs in French.
