Punk isn't about how you dress, but if someone DOES dress like a punk it doesn't mean that they're a poser. I've also met PLENTY of punks who DON'T dress that way. It's all about the music and wanting to make a change. Dress however you want, who gives a shit if someone thinks you're a poser, after all punk is about not caring what others think. You're only half right. Metal started in the late 60s, punk started in the mid 70s. However, much of the metal we know today came from a punk influence. Virtually all of modern metal is influenced by thrash metal, which was heavy metal infused with punk. Also, an interesting fact for you, Judas Priest was part of the new wave of British heavy metal which had a more punk rock D.I.Y. approach to the music.

@richardxs Yep, punk's attitude and music, not Docs, leather jacket or mohawk... :) You can show that you are punk through all of those things, when you were them you are recognized as a punk, but they don't make you one, 'cus Dr. Martens are pretty much commercial and leather jackets can be freakin' expansive and your mohawk is probably done in professional studio for 200 dollars or so :)

So I guess the bands like Bad Brains were never a hardcore band because they have their own pair of shose and happen to be on Mtv now. Agnostic Front was never a punk because they have also been on Mtv. Hell even Discharge has been on MTV before.
