We actually enter the pool from the opposite side, as the tails are already on before submersion. We simply drop right in from the pool's edge. (To descend a ladder with a fishtail on would be rather tricky!)

When I was in high school and in excellent condition (old and out of shape now lol), It was nothing for me to swim the length of an olympic size pool and back underwater without coming up! I could hold my breath 2-1/2 minutes!
