Oh dear another one of those people who use "Wiki" as a source of authority, tut tut. Here's the story as taken from some genuinely authoritive sources; She did indeed marry Thomas J Thorpe but, and I quote; "Her husband reportedly could not accept Tharpe's desire to perform, and the marriage did not last. When the marriage ended she kept his name, but changed its spelling to "Tharpe."" That is taken from; Notable Black American Women, Book 1, Gale, 1992.

Also check; Heilbut, Tony, The Gospel Sound: Good News and Bad Times, Simon and Schuster, 1971. Those sources go on to say that the change wasn't out of bitterness toward her ex husband but more a desire to "de-anglicise" Thorpe which both she and her producers didn't think sounded right for her sound and persona. So it seems to me that if you were genuinely interested in respecting her you would have used the name that she chose for herself not the disgarded name of an ex husband.

Lastly I accept that I misspelt her name by ommitting an "e" and adding an "s" but then I wasn't using it as an attempt to get people to waste their time and look at my lame video.
