  • Tech engine, sound effects, artistic style and polygonal models were there. Level design was not

  • Fat guy slides down stairs 10:33

  • At that time I had a GeForce 2 MX with 64MB memory (that sucked) and you needed something like GeForce 3 Ti500 just to run this in whatever acceptable level of details. Anybody here old enough to know what GeForce 2 and 3 were?

  • @soberek I do very well.

  • I rather like this more than the retail.

  • amazing stuff

  • This still looks amazing for a ten-year old alpha!

The main changes between this and the final version seem to be mainly the atmosphere. It's a shame that the sounds in this alpha were not used in the final game. There was some dispute with Trent Reznor (also did Quake sounds).

There's a lot of nice set-pieces in this alpha too, which nicely break up the monotony.

  • @Obli20v this is because Doom 3 with its id Tech 3 is usually considered the first of the modern games with its per-pixel lighting and shaders. After that..newer games just introduced more higher definition textures, more poligons, techniques for simulating the global illumination..for improving their realism.

  • Epic alpha version!

  • death animations, cool sounds- what happened to the final release ;(((

  • @Tralfamadorczyk the gen tecnology was not powerfull enought for many of the stuff that id had in project. id do engine that can run on the gen tecnology instead to just do engines with everything inside but that the 1% can play (yes I am referring to crytek...)

and they engines are always out standing...

  • much better than the original doom3... unfortunately. this one had better athmosphere and was kinda misterious.

  • @Tralfamadorczyk the only real "improvement" to the doom3 effective games is the flashlight with the gun.

  • This was really space-age stuff way back when.

(Played this much more than the full game.)

  • "I know how to make this scarier!" "Lets make everything dark as fuck and down grade the graphics and sounds!" "The gamers will be terrified of the crappy final release with how bad it looks compared to this version of which we should have went with!"

  • @v1d30judg3r "Lets make everything dark as fuck and down grade the graphics and sounds!"

wait what? the doom3 graphics are nearly unbeaten even today...

  • this game used to shit me up big time

  • wait!!!: ignore my first comment, i was thinking about another video!! SORRY!!!!!

  • tip: dont make your vids so long of they are only titled about one thing

  • hahahhaha nice

  • Some of the animations on the weapons are better, the weapon sound effects are better, enemies don't disappear, the environment is better lit, and those fatalities are amazing. Other than that the final version is better.

  • @10samm10 the weapons are more or less the same, and the sounds are actually horrible (the pistol have the sound of doom2...) the enemies dissapearing (and the physics error in the final release) comes from the fact that the game would be too heavy to being played...remeber that all lights are in real time in doom3...even the flames of the imp in the final version...

  • It's definitely worse than the final. sounds are meh. Some parts of the levels are in the game, but improved. But I miss the scenes with the pinky and the hellknight 'fatality' ending.

  • what is doom 3 alpha O.o? i was playing to old school doom and wanted to watch doom 3 gameplay. so i find "classic doom 3" "doom 3 res(i can't spell that work lol) of evil" and now this O.o i'm so confused

  • @ganonslyaer98 doom3 alpha is the alpha build of the engine(so the first iteration of the working engine.)

many of the thing in here are still in the final game but in different way or improved(the flame of the imp for example:in the final release have a better effect and cast a realtime light.)

  • @1r0zz well that mcals more sence lol, thanks for explaning

  • @ganonslyaer98 glad that I have been helpful.

  • The Imp attack sound has the Hell Knights from Doom 2's sounds in it. :P

  • @TheRoboticFerret many of the sounds comes from the old doom and quake: probably id still did not rec the new sounds.

  • Beta and Alpha versions are always way better than the final releases. It's sad.

  • @Grenadier1939 This looks more better than official relase look at weapons enemies levels animations ai looks more better like Official

  • These sound like the FX that Trent Reznor did before he dropped out of the project :(

  • 10:32 For some reason that's extremely hilarious xD

  • 10:35 Physics.

  • WOAH! the death aanitmation is WAY BETTER!

  • i prefer this to actual doom 3

  • Great job, I like how the characters move like zombies :P

  • This looks better than the finished product.

  • Just explain me at which point of the project, id got the amazing ideas of giving shitty sounds for the machinegun, making the game so dark at the point that you cant even see the details, a shotgun that cant kill anything 2 feet away from you, and monsters that turns into gay ashes after death. And why not include executions like the one in the end of the video? Seriously, this looks WAY better than the final product. The real Doom 3 sucks hard compared to this.

  • @SGtMarkIV With the exception of the execution at the end of the video, you can use Perfected Doom 3 to fix all of the other problems.

  • worst animations in game industry since pac-man...

  • it's funny how the marine that you play as isn't scared shitless

  • The zombies are so fast

  • I like how the shotgun looks in this than in the final game, it looks more like the shotgun from original doom.

  • This is the only chance of playing duke nukem 2001 cuz this runs on the same graphics and physics engine

  • @wyatt190 Where the hell did you get that from?

  • @Marnetmar666 go search up dnf 2003 beta

  • @wyatt190

DNF never ran on the Doom 3 engine.

  • the ending was epic lol. to be honest the grapichs looks worser than the actuall DOOM3. but it looks like the monsters are more alive and responding. i dont recall the hellknight could ever pick you up after killing you like this

  • @muzimuzi "worser"?

  • @superdude9856 well yes they are almost the same but i checked close and the textures on the alpah version are more smeared then on the original. but the monsters do look more "alive" if thats what you mean

  • @muzimuzi What I mean is that "worser" isn't a word. :)

  • @superdude9856 right... its worse i thought worser would be worse big time hah

  • @muzimuzi the hellknight scene at the end it is obviously a cinematic...

  • @1r0zz yes but how do u know for sure they didnt plan on putting it on the reall game? btw im not sure it is since i played the alpah and checked that part myself. he still does that to you after he kills u down there no matter your location

  • @muzimuzi probably was a scripted animation for the dead animation that would be personalized for every enemy, but scrapped because probably bugged or just boring...it's cool to see it once or twice but every time you die can be boring or frusrtating. or it was just something that did not make up to the final release...

  • @muzimuzi Play it, the graphics are actually better aside the glitches. And the effects were better.

  • @SatanFang The question is, why did they make it WORSE for the FULL game?

  • @hardstyle905 With Rage they made the graphics so bad to the point that it was nothing but a blur, Quake 3 is from 1999 and has 10 times better graphics.

  • I want to play this BADLY. X_X

  • This is Real Alpha Version ?

  • @SmokeRww Yes. There was a website where you could downlaod it from but I cant remember what it was

  • They still made the maps too tight....

  • @DASPEN666Devil never found that a problem. like the dark levels...

  • @1r0zz Not the darkness or not the tightness its just that they should have made open levels like in doom 1

  • Doctor Lawrence Gordon's foot at 05:46

    :-D

  • i like the game they released but there are some things here they should have kept

  • @spartan3924 I agree, like being able to see what's actually going on would have been great for the final version!

  • they had to keep the shotgun model

  • Why the hell is this more Doom like then what they actually released?

Had this been released in 2002, this would of been awesome.

  • I remember playing this on a TI 4200SE, then buying an FX 5900 Ultra on launch day. Good times!

  • Oh man thanks so much for uploading this! I never actually seen and played Alpha version... this is awesome :)

  • This looks so bad, it feels like everything is in slow motion and the corridors/areas are poorly designed and also smaller than the ones in the final game. Thank god it got significantly changed later on.

  • @GUInterface i like it a lot

  • That ending was for press, IIRC version first introduced to public was pretty much similar to this leaked alpha.

Anyway really amazing how much polish did they done from this alpha to final. This really feels somewhat slow and ugly.

  • "Only one man stands between Hell and Earth."

    ".. Huh?"

:| Well, that would be my reaction too, to be fair.

  • remember playing this on my Geforce 2 Ti - that was SICK!!! I couldn't belive that my card actually can handle graphics like this, even without bump mapping etc.

  • this looks AMAZING for 2002

  • Makes you wish the game had come out in this form, rather than having some bullshit "story" etc, they should have stuck to what they done best: mindless shooting. No dialogue.

  • @johnrthome

Lol fuck off, doom 3 was a great game and many including me loved the story.

This is just an alpha and i remember playing it, it was bugged as hell obviously and a ton of placeholders.

Unless you walked and behaved in a certain way it wouldnt feel anything like this video.

Sadly doom4 is gonna be what you asked for, another doom2..

  • @johnrthome excuse me? fuck off cunt face, doom 3 was a great game with a great storyline. if you hate the storyline then you hate doom and doom 2 since it's basically the same storyline. and i think the retail is much better, it was much more scarier and made me shit my pants. this was just boring, the only thing better were some of the sounds and weapon models.

  • @johnrthome if retail version turned out like the alpha and the alpha turned out like the retail you'd be saying "i like the scarier version better".

  • Comment removed

  • wow that death at the end was really cool. they should of had that in the actual game. every monster has their own unique kill every time u die.

  • A lot of things are better in this version, but some are inferior. The zombies and guns definitely sound much better, but the animations are worse than the final product imo.

  • I like of the smoke of the gun, the actual version dont have it. :(

  • @ForsakenEagle This is the Beta Version. A Version from internal use of the id Software. This leaked before the Doom3 avaliable. You can play it Download from the Internet. You can find it. If I find, I will put the link here and in my blog. ;)

  • this must become doom 4

  • i dont understand...... Alpha looks so fucking awesome, the reloads and guns look great, and the monsters sound awesome on their own, why the change?

  • @G33KN3rd Because at the time this alpha ran really low fps like 0-20's. Many complained about performance so I guess Doom3 was redesigned with smaller and narrower areas and overall quality was reduced in every department. I remember at the time testing this alpha out. It was the scariest pc gaming experience at the time especially sound-wise. Sadly, we will never see the first version of Doom3 due to this leak.

  • @stormyandcold well if I were ID Software, I would've waiting a bit till computers got a bit stronger like today.

  • @G33KN3rd They would have been bankrupt years ago though if they took that approach. They have another chance to get it right with Doom 4 which will be shown when Rage is finally released.

  • @G33KN3rd New Sounds I think. Like the Gun in the reload. The sounds of Doom3 is very good to.

The changes of the creatures and avatars are good (because in the new version the creatures have more good graphics and moviments). This version, of Beta, is very slow (I remember of play it in a good computer at this age, in the 2003). Now our computers make it run very good and fast. Because it the last version is more fast, because is more simple and have some better new graphics.

  • i love how the commando says MORTAL! and then he dies like 2 seconds after

  • The pinky busting through the pipes should have been in the full game, why the hell didn't the full game get physics like that? that looked pretty realistic.

  • @DarkShadowRage2 They *did* add that part in the game, a pinky busting through the wall/pipes... It was so crazy. I'll never forget it; playing with my buddy in the middle of the night. It's when you see the pentagrams on the walls with the distant screaming.

Otherwise I agree, it seems the boxes etc. all had more realistic/floaty physics, looks a lot better and immersive.

The physics of the final/retail version of Doom 3 felt a little too "static", like everything weighted like a million tons.

  • @DarkShadowRage2 It's not physics there. That's done all via script.

  • Look closely, the sequence of that z-sector being transformed into a zombie at 1:57 is actually what you see on that big screen when you find that "i-built-his-cage" scientist on retail version of Doom 3.

  • This looks real corny and no where near as lengthy as the final version Doom 3 intro. But I did like the narration and stuff a little. :\

  • 9:03 hell knight death sound

  • cool intro

  • Is there a way to import alpha's shotgun model and animation to the final release of Doom 3? It's SO MUCH better than the release Doom 3 version.

Alpha honestly had some awesome cutscenes, why the hell isn't the bathroom scene in the final product?

  • How drunk are these people?

  • Commando is calling you mortal?:O

  • I have enjoyed more alpha than full game :/

  • I remember what a hype that game had before release, much talk about mind blowing visual effects, such as dynamic lighing. At that time all were waiting for GeForce 3, a new revolutionary monster that was supposed to fully manage game.

And yeah, unfortunately final game wasn't that good :(

  • too bad they downgraded the final version. hell, if they downgraded doom 3 one more time, it would have the graphics of pong.

  • Too many cutscenes

  • Anyone had any luck with getting this to work on Windows 7?

  • @TheCraziestMonkey Doom 3 works on Windows 7, yh.

  • @ukloi123 I'm fully aware of that.

I mean has anyone gotten the alpha version to work?

  • @TheCraziestMonkey Oh, idk. :(

  • @ukloi123 That's a shame. I hope that someday someone finds out how to get this working so I can experience this nostalgic gem once more.

  • @TheCraziestMonkey That would be nice, yh. :)

  • The shotgun looks miles better then what they went with in the end.

  • I can remember where there was really great stuff in the alpha... Monsters that rip you into pieces and bite of your head and you saw all this live in 1st person view. It was real horror... But nothing of this made it to the final game :(

  • @slaindevil yeah id really pulled the ol bait and switch on us. I haven't forgiven them since and neither have many other fans

  • @a1rh3add waaaaaaaah

  • I remember downloading this back in 2003, I had a Geforce 2 so I couldn't run it haha

  • Problem with original Doom 3 is that characters don't have a feel of being the "true" characters at all, because they miss weight. They disappear because of engine incapabilities and it hurts gameplay a lot. This is how things should have stayed.

  • I can't imagine how amazing this would've looked when it was released.

    Jesus it STILL looks awesome.

  • the only bit this demonstration needed was the rotating ID logo

  • Comment removed

  • Great, the code for the door on second level is 924 !!! :D

  • @SHAWSIE64 this is what the 2003 version of dnf was going to look like

  • hey how did you get this running? i cant get it to run under windows 7 :(

  • @an1m4l it should work automatically like it did for me. if not try right clicking the game and go to properties to set it in compability mode, then choose win xp.

  • @KnicksNY7 Thanks, i tried that already and it doesnt work sadly. I got it running on an old XP pc i have but the FPS was so shit it was like 15fps!! Would love to get it running on W7 but just cant get it working. Maybe an ATI issue

  • @an1m4l btw what version of Doom 3 do you have? Retail,Steam, etc?

  • @KnicksNY7 got a retail version i bought on release day in 2004! But that wouldnt affect the beta at all right?

  • ive had a bizarre glitch in doom 3 for years, i never knew what caused it, but in the very first level, the first guy standing in front of you with a PDA says "for years, man has looked to science for answers" from this intro, instead of his real dialogue!! I always wondered wtf that was from.

  • this is so low end now :D

  • Not by any means. They used id tech 4 to make Brink, and they're currently using it to make Prey 2.

  • @Marnetmar666

doom 3, how it plain looks.... not the method how games are done after it, bro.

  • 4:3 wooo!

  • Doomguy talked!!!

  • @4:58

Lol there go that brain on the floor from the DOOM series

  • lol u cant kill the zombies... REALISTYC

  • @FanatecSystem Learn how to spell.

  • @AP0CALYPTIC4 i am not from america dude -.-

  • @FanatecSystem Oh then sorry, dude,

  • @AP0CALYPTIC4 no problem ;)

  • I like the old Doom III Logo

  • On 10:33 very funny ass-ladder ride. :)

  • do u need doom 3 to run it??

  • Amazing... I remember downloading this leak a long time ago (and prompted me to just download it again). It was a lot scarier than the actual game due to the toned down violence in the final. And why did they change the Pinky bathroom scene in the final (That scene freaked me out!)? Ive downloaded the beta however cannot seem to get it running in windows 7 64 bit edition as the application gives an error after loading the files and initially staring the game. Do you know of any fix for this?

  • @abystus - Where did you download it?

    Thanks

  • Oh wow! I never even realized there was an alpha... They seriously changed a lot compared to the retail version; the retail version is tame in comparison! Much more scarier.

Anyone know where I can download this from? I've checked all around Google, but nada... It would be much appreciated. :)

  • I can't believe they cut the bathroom scene from the full game. That part was talked about in almost every single PC magazine when Doom 3 was first revealed.

  • You can actually still download this alpha... I did.

Let me say, this is better then the actual game.

It was more scarier than the actual Doom 3.

Most importantly, it felt like a Doom game.

AND YOU CAN STILL DOWNLOAD IT JUST GO TO GOOGLE AND SEARCH IT

  • So far ahead of its time in '02.

  • the alpha still has a special place in my heart, the sounds, the unforgettable cutscenes and scary as hell. I'm watching this while im wearing the doom 3 tshirt. By the way, how did you manage to get it running in such great fps ? i remember it ran like shit back then

  • Some animations are strange...

    But it looks fun nevertheless.

  • i remember the day it was filtered over internet, funny XDCC days

  • if the game came out in 2002 it would have been mad good

  • I took off work when this game came out.

  • holy shit, this is awesome, even better than the actual game

  • The firing sounds are mych better in this version.

  • @demollyon Yeah all those unmodified stock sound effects you hear in literally every form of media adds a whole lot to the game. Doom 3's firing sounds left a lot to be desired but anything is better than what's in this video

  • were can i get this i must play it

  • Whats with the beta/alpha games being better than the finished ones?

Doom 3 and Half Life 2 to name a few.

  • i play this game all the time

  • If Doom 3 was never leaked, this what we would be playing!!!

  • @Deader87

Yeah, Doom 3 was scheduled to be released in 2002/2003, but then a fucking asshole leaked it and then id Software changed the game. This one seems way more scarier than the retail, same with Quake III Arena. Quake III Arena was scheduled to be released in mid-March, 1999 but some asshole leaked the Quake III arena IHV at ATi.

  • @LivingdeadMetal Yep, when I make a game inspired by this I will make it more like the Alpha not the retail. Luckily we have mods to change that!!!

  • yeah doom 3 is the best fps of all time

  • I wish the shotgun be in the actual game

  • 11:08 SHIT!!!! I WISH THAT HAD BEEN INCLUDED IN THE FINISHED GAME!

  • lol, I remember trying to play this in 2002-2003 only my shitty PC couldn't handle it at more than 2 FPS :<

    Good times.
