Oh how I loved Wagon Train!! I had a crush on Michael Burns. I grew up on all those old westerns when TV was clean and decent for all the family! I sure miss those days! My kids and g-kids can't understand or appreciate these shows and tease me about my "cowboys" But that's ok, they just don't know what they missed and still are missing!!
@paulnkiki Bond died of a heart attack on November 5, 1960 in Dallas, TX while on a personal apperance tour, so that was during the 1960-61 season of Wagon Train.
Heavens to Murgatroid! I always love hearing this classic TV Western theme! THANKS for posting it! Since it was written by the late great Jerome Moross, who wrote the music for the epic 50's movie Western "The Big Country", I'm not at all suprised by how good this TV theme is...to me, it even has the same "epic" and "sweeping" feel to it! You've MADE my day & my weekend! :)
Wagon Train. One of the best series I have ever watched. EVER!
Ward Bond was one of the best actors of all time. Though to be honest, I don't know as many of his movies as I'd like. SOmething I'm going to have to work on in the near future.
WAGON TRAIN the greatest tv westerns with the best WARD BOND my childhood hero, John Waynes buddy. tragic loss. Right lets see WARD BOND clips from WG. We need more heros like this man who died in 60. Last episode was with John wayne doin a cameo. Im a tv film historisn. i knew 900 plus actors &show buz folks. have my own website on old films&stars of yesteryear. WAGON TRAIN in color & with WARD BOND superb grand televidion. i should know. BOND remains my hero for eternity. Thanks Folks.TOMK
Rawhide and Wanted: Dead or Alive and many other westerns are on DVD. If you have Encore Westerns, you can watch episodes of Maverick, The Rifleman, Cheyenne and Gene Autry.
@timboss56 The reason TV today is crap is they won't pay the production costs of these older TV series. They fill the airtime with stuff that's cheapest to make - using the general public all the time, studio talk shows, stuff about cooking. There was a Golden Age for television - and it's LONG gone.
@Bouncybon: you are absolutely correct in that aspect. While todays "stars" of marginal acting quality rake in over one million dollars PER EPISODE, and the cost of everything is super-inflated, the production company and network have little money for "dumb stuff" such as good writing, a musical introduction & soundtrack, good sets, etc. Back then, TV stars were experienced movie and stage actors, the writers were incredible, and the budgets accomodated quality productions.
@timboss56 You can get all the episodes off of netflix watch instantly. I watched this when I was a kid, and then about 2 months ago found it on net flix and I've been adicted to it ever since. WOW how our society has degraded since the 50s and 60s, you really see it in from watching this.
Anybody ever seen or posted a shot of the Video with John Wayne in Wagon Train. It is mentioned in his biography that he appeared with his best friend (Ward Bond) in an episode of Wagon Train. (Maybe the last episode) He played General Sherman (a take off of the character he played in how the west was won)...his credits on the show were listed as Morris...instead of Wayne...
Thank you Encore Westerns!

Picking up season 1 and 2 in just a few minutes. I had the sent "site to store" at WM.
And yes . . our society has become pure crap in just a few decades, which is easily seen by watching this magnificent series.

They are showing the early episodes of "Wagon Train" on Encore Westerns cable movie channel in the afternoons starting monday.
And to answer the Ward Bond question, he was the original star, but he died before the 1960-1961 season I believe.

I wonder why, Starz, the western channel, doesn't show the Wagon Train series, Wells Fargo, Rawhide, etc.
Great t.v. westerns.
I grew up w/them & still enjoy them today!
Wish Hollywood would make a comeback w/ good western movies.

I agree, the originals with Ward Bond were the best but the most beloved character throughout was played with perfection by Frank McGrath.
