My Grandad passed away recently and when we got some of his stuff we discovered a love letter he wrote to my Grandma in 1949. He had written these lyrics out for her and said the name in it should have been May as it was exactly how he felt about her. Why is love no longer like that? Beautiful.
His voice has stayed with me too. I remembered seeing 'Sanders of the river' when I was young, I was struck by the patronising storyline, but more particularly by Paul Robeson's beautiful voice. The memory will stay with me for ever. I hope someone can add the other song I love from the film ' My little black dove' which is a lullaby.
When I was about 3 years old my mum use to sell ice cream in the cinema. When she couldnt find a baby sitter she use to sit me in the back row and do her work. The first 2 movies I remember seeing were Rock Around The Clock with Bill Haley and another with Paul Robeson in a canoe playing an African singing!!! This would of been about 1956. This voice has stayed with me ever since.
It was 'Sanders of the River' a film which today is so politically uncorrect, it's shameful. Paul himself was pushed into doing it as, at the time black singers could only to take what they were given! However his dignity shined through and his voice transcends the patronising storyline. I believe that his beautiful voice is perfection.

My beloved Paul had such a sympathetic voice; he is still in my heart and will there be forever.
