@RedCl0ud22 Red released a camera that doesnt work properly. ask anyone whos actually IN the industyr. my epic still makes enough money renting out, so no sweat. but quality-wise and in terms of the beauty beauty of the image. alexa kills it... theres a reason why the entire commercial industry chose the Alexa over the RED. All 3 of my alexas are always bouncing around some anonymous content, smuggler, hungryman jobs while the epic is on a 3D music video.
@paperisdelicious Do you know what you're talking about? I definitely disagree with that. I don't know about you, but my understanding is that we are comparing who controls the movie business. Google "List of films shot in digital" and click on the second link. It should be a Wikipedia page with the same title. Read it and weep, buddy...although the Arri Alexa gave a decent effort, it's still in a far away 2nd place. I'm curious to see your response.
@RedCl0ud22 No problem. when I say commercial industry, I mean - commercials. I've been fortunate enough to have a steady job pace in the commercial world. All the following commercials are alexa: all the metro PCS, T-mobile, Verizon, Chevy, Toyota, Pepsi (most), Coke (most), Payless, Mercedes, Walmart, Ameritrade, Progressive Insurance, NFL (most), CA lotto commercials (all), - also 90210 took my cameras, hangover2 took one, the mick jagger "miracle worker" MV, incubus MV.. just to name a few
@paperisdelicious In the last 10 months, 95% of my commercial jobs (I mean real jobs, union jobs, national, not regional, spots are all alexa). I've had 6 Epic jobs, and 2 RED MX Jobs (again, real jobs, union ones). Gotta also wonder why the only director of photography to have two of his movies up for academy award for best cinematography at the same time chose the alexa after a full in depth test with all the available cameras. In the film industry we talk about alexa/epic as an obvious choice
@paperisdelicious That's a pretty nice list. Unfortunately, I can't find a list of commercials shot on RED, although they do have a long list of movies and television shows shot on RED. I remember there being a long list of commercials in a presentation that I saw Ted (the main public guy of RED) give. I just think you're a little confused, and underestimate RED. If the Alexa was the "obvious" choice, then why would all those movies on that Wiki list be shot with the RED Epic or the RED One???
@RedCl0ud22 Red MX/Epic are fantastic cameras, but to a certain extent. I can name the television shows shot on red. The only one I've worked on is pretty little liars which uses 3 red MXs (one of which are mine, housed at keslow cameras). It's hard to say I'm a little confused if I work in the industry, own each of these cameras, and regularly use these cameras, while meeting new sets of professionals from job to job with the same opinion. The reason why red holds the theatrical feature...
@RedCl0ud22 ...(cont.) market is because of the resolution. The image beauty/quality/latitude/skin tone on the alexa blows the epic away, but the resolution doesnt hold on a 30ft screen. Thus they resort to the resolution from a RED. This still doesnt take into account that red cameras regularly disobey, overheat in moderate temps, and act up randomly. Red has a reputation for releasing things before its fully ready/working. Either way, they're both fantastic tools/investments- just different.
@SonyHC3 Yeah but the RED Epic doesn't downsize the quality at all. As far as I know, this Sony camera downsizes that 8k resolution to a 4k resolution of usable pixels. Plus, the RED Epic has a 5k sensor. But this isn't a fair discussion because the new RED Epic-X is shipping along with the Epic-M and One of course, and this Sony camera won't be out for awhile...Red is just way ahead of the game. :)
@RedCl0ud22 (pt3) Believe me dude, I dont gain any commission telling you this. But from all those jobs i mentioned from my resume, its a bunch of camera geeks that dont know each other from job to job.. this is all we talk about. It's a 'really' strong general consensus on each job rgd how we feel on RED vs Alexa & I'm dissing myself as a 2xRED owner too. They really know how to put on a show and create desirability. They're strong but have a long way to go if they want to keep up.
@paperisdelicious Ok, ok, you've proven your credibility...I'm actually just a high-schooler with no experience with movie cameras other than the RED Epic and RED One. Lol. BUT, I must say, I watched a reel of RED Epic footage on a 40 foot screen with a 4k projector, and it was absolutely incredible!
Well come on, Jim only started this project like 6 years ago! Everything is a work in progress, and they're always trying to release new builds to fix problems. (Continued...)
I really liked this video as it showed an array of equipment used in film production. I'd say more was spent on rigs, cranes etc than on cameras. I would like to learn more about the F65 and have a blat on it some-day.
this type of camera is not for the independent film maker who's willing to buy equipment, so there's no brain wash what so ever. This tool is design for the big studios, you name them, but an independent film maker can maybe rent it for a music video or commercial etc.
its definitely out of my budget...but if one of my clients has the budget, why not rent it and shoot for the fun of it : )
How much does he get to brainwash us ? I guess a lot of money ! Also, no matter how great your camera is...you always lose down the pipeline. It is called MTF (Modulation Transfer Function)...Google it to fully understand what i am talking about. I guess my point is; DO NOT SPEND A FORTUNE ON THE CAPTATION PROCESS instad, be creative and tell great story...the audience will apreciate it and will eventually forgive the not so amazing bit depth and color space of your medium.
So this is what it feels like to watch pirated films..

@paperisdelicious Well that sucks. Looks like someone should have done some more research before buying one of those beasts.
