My relative was a soviet soldier on finnish border in 80s, always got along with finns and they liked him.

Russians kept praising their immense resources throughout the Soviet era and what we saw were people living in kommunalkas, standing in line and working in rundown factories producing inferior quality products or military technology. Being a warehouse of natural resources is not enough. Russia "freed" us from Sweden in the sense that we kept on being the same as with Sweden in the Empire whereby our statehood developed.
