  • Amazing

  • Please, please, please STOP mentioning Kelly fucking Clarkson in the same sentence as Patty Griffin. Kelly Clarkson is NOTHING. End of story. Patty is the real deal, and Kelly Trailer Park Clarkson should not even be allowed to listen to Patty's songs, let alone cover them.

  • Love Kelly and her voice too......but.....NOBODY can top Patty when it comes to this song. Her voice is awesome on this. :-D

  • I love Kelly and her version. It's so soulful and she just has the most beautiful tone. But, I have to admit Patty does it best -- so pure that it just pierces your heart.

  • Expect to hear this a lot soon. It's Crystal Bowersox's "victory song".

  • LOVE THIS SONG !!

  • awesome this is one of kelly clarksons fav artist s no wonder she is awesome

  • What's the name of the song, about buying her red shoes, it's a real rocker, from the "Sessions at 54", it used to be here on You Tube somewhere. I really miss it. It's a sad kind of song about being a woman, and attacked.. starts slow, then fast.

  • Flaming Red. =]

  • Patty's voice is just bursting with soul. You can practically see her heart beating on the outside. Amazing.

  • i love this woman

  • 1:35-2:18 is just spine-chillingly awesome.

  • gregarious24, listen to her sing this with S. Burke. it's at that same point in the song that she will give you chills too.

  • just beautiful

  • this is one of the most beautiful songs ever written.

  • hear hear!

  • Stunning.

  • omg, she looks like she's about to break in half, she is so skinny!!!

    good song, though

  • I love this song.

    It is beautiful!

  • Im in LOVE. Marry me Patty!!!!!!!

  • Seems like every song I listen to her sing makes me cry

  • this is currentlt my favorite song ever

i love both kelly and patty's versions cause they have that same emotion expressed differently

personally...kelly has the most beautiful voice i've ever heard and she puts so much emotion into the song with her powerful and soulful sound

but patty's voice is definitely amazing in a completely different way that sends just as many chills down my back everytime i hear it as kelly does

  • wow

  • This woman is amazing! Would like to see this release on radio!

  • My favorite performance by Patty of this song...and the first time I'd ever heard it. Magic.

  • great song again i will agree with the other comments i do really like kelly's version

  • she is awesome, too. good choice Kelly

  • Real talent.

  • she's a real artist. amazing.

  • I know this is Patty's song and it is beautifully written - but I prefer Kelly Clarkson's version..

    love the song though!

  • same here

  • and here.

  • For what it's worth, I think Kelly prefers Patty's version.

  • I think she does too. She always says she's afraid to cover songs she loves because she's afraid of ruining them (impossible).

  • ofcourse she does! i heard a story about kelly being at one of patty's concerts... she was in the front row with a baseball cap singing her heart out. this was 7 years ago!

  • Hmmmmm? I wonder what Kelly thinks.

  • this song is on Patty's newest album "Children Running Through" for those of you who want to buy it.

  • An awesome album.

  • Patty, you are a dear and precious and deeply talented angel from heaven. I love your voice, I love your songs, and I think your contribution to this world will live long after you are gone. You are a true artist.

  • was this song ever recorded?

  • i was wondering the same thing.. i would like to buy the cd or something

  • From a Distance was written by Julie Gold, 1st sung by Nanci Grifith & covered (badly) by Bette Midler.

  • skabdug, yep i stand corrected, Julie Gold did write it... damn CD notes. Researched and found songwriter Julie. Well spotted Batman !!

  • Bette Midler wrote "From A Distance" and was covered by Nanci Griffith. I don't think Patty recorded it.. she may have sang it as a cover.

  • Inspiring.

  • she didn't write "from a distance" -- hate to burst your bubble. it's a relief to me, honestly... that song's a little bit goofy

  • Dang, your right. She sang it,,,thats what it was. I remember going out and buying her album (it was actually a cassette tape, i feel so old) any way, did'nt like most of the songs, she does alot of hit and misses.

  • she wrote 'let him fly' too

  • I'd never heard the song, but just listened to it. Like the song

  • Bette Midler sang a song called "From a Distance,".I loved the song and found out Patti Griffen wrote it. Years later, I saw Kelly Clarkson sing "Up on the Mountain", looked up the song writer, and again, Patti. A couple of days ago, I was browsing through some Bette Midler videos and clicked on a duet with Bette and Dolly Parton. They were singing a cute song called "Moses", went to look up the song writer, guess who, Patti again.

  • I hope you went and listened to Patti's version of that song. I just listened to Dolly and Bette sing it and it was like they were all high or something - that song IS not supposed to be sung like that...horrid.

  • Patty did not write From A Distance. I am glad she didn't cause I've always thought that song was pretty bad. Patty wrote Moses which Bette Midler covered pretty badly. Moses is one of my favorite Patty songs. A Fag Hag song disguised as religious inspirational. Brilliant.

  • I saw her perform this live in Columbus..I was on the edge of my seat..incredible. I'm also a fan of Kelly Clarkson and I just have to say that to anyone who says Patty has no emotion in her voice..really listen to her. She is one of the most expressive singers I have ever heard/seen. Her voice and lyrics tell the story..there is no need for any added "flourishes". Kelly Clarkson was great..but it was a little too much. Simplicity is a lost art. Patty Griffin is incredible.

  • I was at that concert as well - I didn't want it to end.

  • uh, it's patty's song. kelly sang it once. kelly's great but you have to give patty 1000 times the credit because she actually composed this gorgeous song. it's like saying the dixie chicks did a better job on "let him fly" -- which would be absolutely ridiculous to say, they added nothing new to the song.

  • Not to mention that the video they did for that song was just plain stupid.

  • I just listened to it again. Patty version is pretty, and all... But to me it sounded so much better when Kelly came through with all the power and everything, and her being so called "off key"

  • Did you really say Kelly has not proven anything musically? That is probably one of the most ignorant things I have ever heard. The girl has natural talent. As for the other comments, yes Patty does have a sweeter, softer voice in the song, but you can hear all the emotion, and power Kelly puts in it as well which makes it to me a better version. Its a very powerful, meaningful song that should be sung with power, and a lot of meaning and conviction that Patty just does not do in the song.

  • I don't think that anyone can compare these two singers. Kelly has an amazing instrument, as does Patty. Kelly's interpretation is almost technically perfect. However, Patty's heart can be heard breaking during this song. As wonderful as Kelly does, she does not have the world weary emotion that Patty has to her voice. Love them both for what they each bring to this song. Listen to the message of the song and just enjoy how wonderfully both of these women deliver it.

  • You are drugged.

  • Kelly doesn't even come close. She can scream and has a lot of power but sometimes she is off key and false.

On her version of this song i wonder if she even knows what the song is about...

I think Patty outdoes her in every field.

  • Sure watever except u made a lapsus, im sure u meant

"I think "Kelly" outdoes her in every field" Haha, no bt seriously kelly sang this much better eventhough this is good too, u can always reply ill just come back =D

  • It will always remain a matter of taste, that's unavoidable with music. For me, Kelly kills the song by trying to hard and beeing off key sometimes, but then if others like it that way i dont have a problem with that... I just prefere Patty:-)

The lapsus here is that some people already see Kelly as a great singer while she hasn't proven anything musically.:-)

  • What does she need to prove? for me its already been done

  • I have never heard this women sing before this song. She has an amazing voice, but to me Kellys version of this song is a lot better because you can hear the conviction, and emotion she put into the song. And I liked how Kelly pushed the vocals in the middle of the song when she sung, "Somedays I look down, afraid I will fall" and everything after that.... But this women is amazing as well, just singing with no emotion or power to her voice like Kelly

  • I disagree with your point about Patty not giving any emotions. If you listen to her at 1:58 when she starts singing "sweet voice sweet voice" you can hear the emotions she put in there. but I do agree with you that Kelly has a lot of conviction in the way she sings it. Kelly's a more powerful/soulful singer, but Patty's voice is more soothing and beautiful. They're both amazing, but in different ways. LOVE THEM BOTH!

  • i wish there was a clearer version of this song. i really like her voice :)

  • Best singer/songwriter on the planet. End of Story. :)

  • Never ever heard of this singer before.. Shes not the best singer though shes good and no singers better than any.. But still her songwrtiting skills are great, this song is very touching

  • This song inspired me to write a letter to my sister, who took my sister and I in after our mother died. This song is so beautiful.

  • Wow. You packed quite a bit in that short comment. Powerful. A great testament to the power of music and love.

  • great performance! She is terrific!

  • she can sing and thats sweet song it for MLK i think but yeah its nice and i love her sweet voice...she gave me goosebumps.......thanks for the uplaod

  • ..what's MLK?

  • Martin Luther King--based on his sermon "I've Been To the Mountaintop"

  • that's what i assumed..thanks

  • damn this woman can sing.. i love this song and " heavenly day, .. umong others..lol beautiful

  • I can not stop playing this video. There is also another video on YouTube of Patty performing this song with a blues guitarist behind her. Both videos, and both versions totally mesmerize me. This song, and the incredible voice of Patti Griffin truly takes me to a Peaceful Vally.

  • that's probably Doug Lancio, her lead guitar player... the man is great.

  • I'm in love with this song. I heard Kelly Clarkson sing it on American Idol, and I searched for who else sang it. I had never heard of Patty Griffin before, but she has one of the most amazing voices I've ever heard.

  • Same here.

  • well honestly I'm not a fan of Clarkson and I wish they had said who had written and recorded the song on AI but if anyone finds out about Patty thanks to that, it's a good thing. She's one of the most underrated singer-songwriter alive and it's always fun to spread the joy

  • She's a great singer.

    And this is amazing..

But she looks like a meth addict..

    Oh well.

  • I agree with everything except the meth addict part. She's just a tiny woman. Still yet, it should be that much more amazing that such a powerful voice can come from such a small frame.

  • Look at Bianca Ryan.

She has one of the best voices I have heard in my LIFE, and she is tiny.

Actually now tha tI think about it the big voices seem to come from tiny women.. It's weird.

  • Aretha?

  • Edith Piaf was a tiny bird too... hence the name... but man when she let it rips... wow

  • That's really ignorant to say that Patty Griffin looks like a meth addict just because she is a thin person. Really ignorant, and not a very nice thing to say about her.

  • great artist

  • i couldn't stop my tears when i saw her perform this in LA

  • Saw Patty this weekend. Friggin amazing. Love the new cd but would have liked to hear more from Living With Ghosts. still amazing though and no cd does her live singing justice. The girl rips it up.

  • I love Patty and "Children Running Through" but I really do think I like this version better than the one on the cd. The piano on the cd is awesome, but this version is simple and phenominal.

  • Solomon Burke rips this song up too. Patty accompanies him on it too and man can you tell when she chimes in.

  • New album out tomorrow (Feb. 6)! She takes me out of now...

  • She gives me chills every time. Absolutely incredible.

  • february 7, 2007!! is the set release date for the record...

  • ooh!

  • OMG, this was an incredible performance! Ugh...no words. Love this song, love her, also can't wait for the new album..whenever that is!

  • This is amazing!! I saw her this year in Kentucky and I loved this song to pieces! It has also been called Peaceful Valley, i dont know what the actual name is...can't wait for the new CD!!

  • F A N T A S T I C ~~! Thank you for making this available.
