  • i noticed he always opens his mouth while playing, it's like he's talking to his guitar, or he's attempting to transpose the sound into words. it's clear that he plays passionately and his music really suits his personality, unlike many other guitarists that are only concerned about complex techniques and showing off.

  • I keep coming back to this.. love how Les plays this sparsely, with so much feeling.

  • What a post! Thanks for sharing

  • @anne5surf you're welcome - I like your "folsom prison blues!"

  • Thanks for watching. What She Said did an excellent job of it too, the band sounds great.

  • круто

  • Duke Robillard and I have a new Les Paul tribute CD releasing this week (there are a couple of videos of the songs on my channel). Duke was hugely influenced by Les, and sat in with him once. I can't imagine what a thrill that must have been!

  • man if it wasn't for him no bands we'd like would exist today....R.I.P

    p.s. bad ass guitarist....

  • Lazy river sticked in @ 2:50 :)

  • rip les... just found out today. i'm extremely depressed.

  • What an honor it would've been to share the stage with such a master! You will be missed!

  • Quite a party in Heaven right now...

  • Thanks for all You have left us.

In September I was going to NY to see and hear the master play. It will be still visiting the Iridium in his memory.

  • Les made the Twin axe attack possible which in my opinion sounds best with one playing a Fender strat, and another playing a Gibson Les Paul through no less than 4 Marshall half stacks. That sound is NOT able to be duplicated by ANYTHING ELSE. Rest in Peace Les!

  • That was just a slice of pure beautiful, man.

Thanks, Les, for everything. There's nobody who could have done even half as much.

  • Im not into jazz but when i went to New York i dont loose the Les Show at Fat Tuesday, and when one meet a true legend you will never forget the day.Viva Les Paul¡

  • beautiful song, Thank You Les, for all you've given us. We will miss you. Rest in peace.

If only once in my live time, I want to see the master play, So in September I fly from the Netherlands to NY and visit the Iridium :+)

I hope my dream comes true.

  • i'm turning 18 this november so next year i'm definatley going to see him.

i just hope he has good health and plays then :)

    he is the best!

  • unfortunatly, you cant see him when you turn 18 in november, les paul died today at 94.

  • congrats! I live on Staten Island, and Mandolin brothers is the only place i go, i just purchased an LP there yesterday, my first electric guitar =) I hope i get to see Les Paul play one day, ill make sure my dad and i go one day. Anyone know if you can meet him and get an autograph after the concert or something? I heard hes one of the kindest guys in the entire business.

  • That's a nice comment. I don't know if Les actually gets on here and reads the comments but maybe someone will pass that along to him. He must get that a lot.

  • Mr Les Paul you truly are of a Legend, sir.

You re good news, always, and no one has gone beyond your constance, determination and poetry yet... in all these years there's only one out of all the guitar players in the world who enabled all mankind to dream a bit on the notes of an electric guitar... you. Thank you, sir for you licks, riffs and beautiful inventions.

    Rocking Regards,

    A.

  • It's insane that we can watch the INVENTOR of the electric guitar play it himself.

  • does he teach lessons??

  • Not sure - I think he lives in New Jersey. I'm thinking he probably doesn't need the money!

  • Les Paul is a badass

  • Music owes so much to this man. If it wasn't for him no good bands would probably be around.

  • Anyone who thinks differently is just a slave to a trend or his own prison: Les Paul is the coolest guy on the planet.

  • Amazing at his age.

  • It's just great to see/hear Les playing on this 2 year old video. I remember well his music making with Mary back when I was a youngster of 5 in 1950 - they were a favorite on the sound system at the Officer's Club swimming pool in Corpus Christi TX where my Dad was stationed in US Navy at the time. I've enjoyed his music since then. The great part is that he's going strong at now 93! I and husband Paul (age 63 & 70) work at being around to keep enjoying life even longer than Les has to date :>)

  • Same here......Les and Mary were my favorites and we're about the same age........They were the BEST!

  • Les is the greatest !

  • WOW ......

  • The great Les Paul doing the great Bunny Berigan's "I Can't Get Started" ~ Daaaang! I wouldn't be surprized, in the least, if the two knew one another! Years ago I found a little hashhouse in Norfolk, Va with "ICGS" on the juke and every SUnday I'd listen while I ate my eggs & bacon. Play me a memory...

  • Les Paul is the most talented guitarist on the planet.

  • Uhh, no.

  • Not quite.

  • les i have three of your guitars they rock!!!!

  • Kids, stay off the drugs, and the booze and you too can have a full, meaningful life that touches many people.

  • BYAHHHH!!!!!!

  • gotta love Les!!

  • amazing man, amazing life, true legend and there will never be another like him.

  • ever met les john? neither have i. lol your right a legend. all music today orginated from stuff like that. especially when blues came out.

  • I actually met him this year in august he is SOOOO funny down to earth and I KISSED HIM ON THE LIPS LMAO A LIVING LEGEND!!! WOOHOO

  • im seeing him with my dad and the drummer for my band this summer i cant wait hes such an icon, i play a strat but ive wanted a les paul since i started and its not even that why hes in inspiration its the multitrack recording and everything witht aht, if it wasnt for him none of the artist today would have the records they have new and we wouldnt have great studio musicians like jimi paige and john fruscaintes famouse analog multitracking and overdubbing

  • here is a brief history.....in 1993 les paul had a reunion tour with all the great guitarists who won a les paul ( like slash, brian jones and jimmy page) during one of one of les pauls songs brian jones starts shredding and he was booed off the stage because he made les paul look bad.....sure i don't think les paul can shred but i don't think brian jones....can even do half the shit led paul can... i mean les paul can do the rhythem lead and vocals all at the same time..he is a hell of a player

  • Um, have you evear heard Les paul in his prime? The guy was one of THE fastest guitar playesr in the world... and no, I'm not talking about the sped up stuff that he did later on with Mary. I'm talking about the original Les Paul Trio recordings. The man was a killer on the guita- A KILLER. Do yourself a favor and pick up some of thoes early albums. Les is/ was as fast as guys like Mclaughlin, Pass and Coltrane.

  • Les in his prime was as a formidable guitar player, check out The Decca years set to hear somw awesome licks

  • Uhm... Brian Jones died in 1969...

  • did i say brian jones..... i met keith richards

  • so keith richards was "shredding"? lol

  • les paul 4 life!!!!!!!!!!!

  • A long way from 'How High the Moon' but great educated stuff. Guitar playing that's given me many years pleasure.

  • Les Paul, You are realy great.

  • Lester Polfus or Les Paul is electic guitar genius. God Bless You Mr. Les Paul.

  • The living legend. The Great Les Paul himself! This is absolutly wonderful!!

  • Talent has no age barriers, rock on Lester

  • Hail les paul!

  • even at 91 years old, still doing a good bit of sweep picking.

  • i saw this video of les paul a little while back.. he goes into a guitar shop and sits down beside this kid thats playing a les paul. he picks one up himself and just starts playing and it sounds amazing. the kid is in shock. so when hes done the kid asks "who are you?" and he just smiles and points to the head of the guitar and walks away.

  • Didn't they do that same idea with a beer commercial ? Except it was a bar musician instead of a little kid?

  • ive got no idea i just remember seeing this gibson add but it was like 3 minutes long.

  • if you find that vid again could ya send me the link?

  • ya for sure. ill post it up here if i ever see it again as well

  • The beer commercial I am referring to can be viewed if you search for 'Les Paul (the legend!) in cool "Coors" beer comercial '

  • haha yeah thats almost exactly like the one i remember, but he played like a whole song.

  • i les paul stil alive in this days?

  • Yes - he still plays at this same club every Monday night - 2 shows

  • ok upst8 nice to hear thanks for the info greets from holland;-)

  • i know i dont have the deserve to get a real lespaul, but how much it can cost to get the same guitar?

  • THere's a '72 on ebay right now. WIth 2 days left in the auction - it's up to $538.00 - but will probably end up going for much more.

Search eBay (US) for "Vintage 1972 Gibson Les Paul Recording Guitar +Case '72" or just search for "Les Paul Recording" and check closed auctions to see what they have sold for in the past. Looks like 1,000 to 2,000 on average.

  • Then there are the prototypes lying around his house, who knows how much those would go for.

  • i pray he lives over 100..love him to death

  • I urge everyone to make a pilgrimage to the Irridum to see this legend while you can! Its a great show, the place is a "joint" in the old tradition, but you wont be disappointed. Les Paul is a master showman, and loves to preform. Do it!

  • I'm planning on it next summer. If all goes well, the month after my 21st birthday I'll be taking a road trip to go see him then Chuck Berry at Blueberry Hill.

  • Up the Lazy River is certainly there. One of the great quitarists....

  • I hear "Up the Lazy River" in this song.

  • what a legend!

  • Damn.

  • I love his sound!! And I happen by chance to own a early 70s Recording!! Does anybody know what kind of strings he uses.. I am guessing they are flat wound.. does anybody know?

  • look online at like Musiciansfriend . com they have a set of Les Paul signature strings

  • man he's good. truly a living legend, gotta give it up 4 dis guy

  • My Hero

  • Hi upst8--the one I have is the precursor to the Recording Model, called the Les Paul Professional (circa '69), which had a slightly bigger Les Paul body, and which weighs in at 13 pounds(!!) of rock hard Mahoghany, with the same electronics as the Recording Model, except it takes an external impedance matching transformer.

The Recording Model has a more "ergonomically" contoured body, and the transformer built IN.

On the Recording Model literature, there's only 1 1/4" jack.

  • That particular guitar he's using is an early 70's "Les Paul Recording" equipped with low impedance stacked humbucking pickups. Inside this pickup is a blade magnet pole, rather than screw pole pieces. It's a clean playing guitar (which was why it didn't catch on with the headbangers), but what a tone...clean as crystal, with a frequency response unlike anything else!

  • The recording models had a three-prong xlr input jack next to the standard 1/4" one I think, right?

  • hey, i heard yesterda on the radio a guy was atlking about sports then later on he said les paul turns 92today and i thought he turned 92yesterday but i guess today he does.

  • Not while I was there he didn't.

  • they always have that red les paul at the iridium. does les ever use it?

  • I went to see this amazing man last night, god bless this man! I love this sarcastic bastard, and just having seen him put a smile on my face. seeing this guy as old as he is, still going at what he plainly loves with his trio, and honestly, his trio is amazing too!

  • Did he pose for a picture with people in the audience and then flip off the photographer? I think he does that a lot.

  • its not his fingers... its his elbow.. its permanently set in place cuz he got into a car accident...

they said it would have to be in the same place forever so he had it set where it is so he could still play guitar...

he cant srum anymore or do a lot of the things that made hin amazing and that he was really good at, but he is still god with only one elbow that moves.. that's BA right there...

    OBEY THE PAUL!

  • He does have arthritis in both hands - you can see his fingers don't bend much. He still played incredibly after the elbow was set in place - all those TV shows from the 50's were after the accident (in 1948). Check out some of the clips from his TV show - there's tons of them on here. You can see he was shredding before there was a name for i!

  • Man, thank you for this video! Seeing Les Paul play brought tears to my eyes. This is the closest I´ll ever get to seeing him play. Thank you.

  • Just get yourself to New York City sometime - he's there every Monday night at 1650 Broadway @ 51st Street. 2 shows - 8 and 10! (It's a little far from Brasil, but hey...)

  • Thank you Les Paul! Wow.

  • Les Paul owns all of us guitar players.

  • He really loves the music he's playing

  • Great post upst8. I hope to see him before he "retires"... at what maybe? 100? Fantastic.

  • So smooth and relaxed. i have heard that he can only use 2 of his fingers because of arthritis, if so, he does a damm good job with the 2 he have left!

  • thats lovely man, nice and relaxed!

  • Who's the lady on bass?

  • Nicki Parrott - google her name - she has a great website. Her sister's a jazz musician, too.
