The main reason that so many movies & series on T.V. are re-does or revivals or whatever is because of cynical Hollywood greed. It is part of the whole "High concept" notion. High concept doesn't mean like elevated concept. It actually means the opposite. A high concept movie is a movie which almost anyone can conceptualize. That is it is ass stupid. A moron will immediately understand it. An old established name like Star Trek will get instant high concept, & more people are likely to see it.

I'd put the average episode of the new Battlestar Galactica against anything new or old on TV. It's so unlike the campy 80s version, and I think one of the best sci fi series ever made. I'd put it in my top 5 with the original Star Trek and 1950s Twilight Zone. Granted, I hated the last episode where they find Earth, I thought the way they found it was bullshit.

He pretty well killed it for series purposes...but now he's doing what he did for Buffy; comic adaption. Also, I heard rumors that he wanted to do another movie with Summer Glau, but I don't know if that's anything more than wishful thinking.

Honestly, while Serenity was great...I didn't like it as much as the series, plotwise things just didn't seem to add up. Everything else was still spot-on, though.
