@aerzengellus yes, quite a long shot from here, even with the wind behind you. The shoot will be held one again this year. I will take more photos and put a new video up for you! It is fun, because so many people are so serious, and we are not.
@indiebrazze why do ppl keep preaching this wrongly taught myth? i dont blame you as i was taught this also..however, watch some footage of some of the best archers in the world..absolutely 0 follow through :) once the arrow is gone its gone and it has left the bow b4 he moves his hand....holding it there longer is going to do nothing except make his arm tired xD
Good to see some people doing real archery, my videos on longbow and flatbow archery get shoved aside by pathetic compound archers showing how much money they have with all that cheating technology.
looks like fun, but if ure not careful to count the hits b4 u go and fetch the arrows, i bet u could shoot yourself in the back! Dont u have windy days there?
@lewran very nice sir,,is that a yew bow? well anyway its a real beauty,i just finished my elm long bow.thats what the welsh used..Nice shootin have a good day
@5tonyvvvv quite rare nowadays to have yew in a bow as it is hard to get. Most of the bows in these videos are made from a number of laminations of differnet woods.
Typically hickory for the face, an 'exotic' for the core (purpleheart, greenheart for example,) and osage,or yew for the belly. You can have combinations of all types and bowyers are always trying mixes of wood to try and get the sweetest performance. Not all combinations perform well.... some explode!
@lewran oh i know Yew is all gone..and way to expensive..there is some in USA..pacific northwest yew..Osage is the best i think, but all gone too..its a shame these woods take forever to grow
They're using the modern technique of drawing to the chin and sighting down the arrow instead of the 'proper' longbow technique of drawing to the ear, which takes an awful lot more practice to use effectively accurately.
I think the minimum pound draw in the US for bow hunting is either 40 or 45. Fred Eichler typically uses a 55 lb recurve and has taken everything up to either an Alaskan Brown Bear or a grizzly, absolutely sure which.
I'm currently doing a Bob Bannister mediaeval archery course indoors at Swindon College. He insists all archers draw to the ear, regardless of bow strength. We never have a problem, even the ladies draw to the ear. It's just a matter of style. Most of the training bows are 20 - 45 lbs.
And training bows are made to be pulled back any distance and not break. Most victorian style longbows like we use are usually 29 inch draw at the maximum. Warbows are typically anything up to 33 inches. Pull my bow to 33 and i will have an expensive pile of sticks.
I hope you never have a bow break at full draw on you. When you finish your course, and get yourself a 'medieval bow' and pull it all the way back.. but if it isn't at least 90lb draw weight you are kidding yourself.
do u really need horn tips, ive seen some that dont, and is it called the english longbow, wasnt it already invented,by ancient people, the egytiains used longbows too
The horn is there because if you have a string groove cut into the wood, it will wear. (so they say). Cannot comment on it really, I have bows with wooden groves and horn. Someone, somewhere has made a classification for shooting purposes so all people competing shoot the same thing I expect..
I shoot anything without a sight.....long / short / weak / strong / recurved / straight.
We class anything with counterbalances / rods/ sights on as cheating... (that should stir up a few comments)
It is interesting how technology is discovered and lost, I have seen Roman Scalpels and other surgical implements that stay sharper longer and are less likely to transfer disease than modern ones... Humorous at times how much we don't know. I was aware that Egyptians used "long bows", but wasn't their bow design/shape quite a bit different, or am I thinking of someone else?
so true, also the bow and atlatl spear, must have coexisted.these weapons must have been used together.when was the bow created?what came first the egg or chicken?we think of primitve people as dumb cavemen, but they were just as smart as us today.i dont think we came from ape like creatures.
also otiz the ice man used a 6 foot yew longbow 5,000 years before the english.ancient europeans must have used yew lonbows way before the english.oer maybe they brought the longbow to britian
if u can make a bow from scratch, stave to string, using plant fibers, whick ive read r stronger than sinews.metel smelting could be alot older than we think.the bow is a gift from the gods!
Absolutelly fantastic time with archery.... I wish to have that posibility here in my town....Thanks a lot por posting it.

Try to hold the bow in the shooting position for a few seconds after shooting, because otherwise the arrows dont hit the target that precisely :D

Does the dress code require white shirts or is that an archery thing?
Theriomalstrom 2 years ago
Yes, it is all a bit 'formal, white/green combination - trousers/shirt..
not what we usually wear here in sunny england - usually cold weather stuff and waterproofs!

It seems that is made of rope.
That's it??
Pwata 2 years ago
No, it is made of straw (dried grass) It is made by making a very long 'snake' of straw which is then wound around...
i will send you a link in a message if I can find a good picture...

Hello Mr. Lewran.
Please, could show how these targets with strings made of?
Here in Brazil we do not have, and I would like to make one.
Thank you.
Greetings from Brazil!!

Do you mean, how the targets are tied down?
Or the actual straw targets?
