  • an.... inspiring video Andy! Sorry, couldn't resist! :)

to be honest I've had people say nice things about me (always good to hear of course) but about the only time I can remember someone saying I inspired them was an ex girlfriend, although we split she left me a note saying that meeting me had really helped her to try and be a better person... not sure that counts as 'inspiring her' but it must be close.

  • To get a note like that from an ex girlfriend is really something. Notes from ex girlfriends are usually far less complimentary than that! :)

  • It's amazing how spending many hours on here can have a profound influence on your life. I was walking in the woods just the other day...

  • I've just watched your video Andy.

    What a coincidence! :)

  • This was all really interesting to me. I'm just starting to YT, and I almost never get any comments or ratings on my own vids. While I'm kind of curious who is watching I do not agree with Google's idea that vids which generate a lot of comments are better because they generated interest. IMHO, most of the vids which generate a lot of comments are pretty base and the commentary just degenerates after "first." If people are watching and sharing, they are interested....oops, out of letters. Bye.

  • Thanks. Glad you enjoyed it.

As i've said to somebody else in these comments. Anybody starting out on YouTube now must find it a little hard & pretty mind blowing too.

I've been here since 2006, so have a head start on a lot of people.

Your point about the videos with the most comments not being the best videos is very relevant. That's something that annoys a lot of us.

Why do some videos get all those views & comments?

    Enjoy your YouTube experience :)

  • Thanks so much! I'll be checking out your vids more in the future, I'm sure ^5.

  • I'm having a "crisis of faith" right now and I think it does have to do with influence and "why bother, who cares"?

I do try to make and effort and encourage people and let them know they've influenced me. Six months I told my doctor "just to let you know, in case no one does, you've changed and improved my life tremendously" because of HOW he helped me get my health back this past 18 months. His face lit up and I realized no one tells doctors that very often, it's taken for granted.

  • I've noticed your Tweets have seemed a little down with YT.

I know that feeling. but, as i said in that video, i still intend being here. Even if it can be very frustrating at times, which it often is.

Loved that story about your Doctor. That just shows the effect that a bit of recognition can have. Well done for saying that to him. it obviously made his day :)

  • It's true that I'm down on my channel but I'm not on YT itself really. I'm realizing that being gone so long, I missed a lot. I wouldn't give up my channel. It is starting from scratch and not just way behind though, so I need to readjust my thinking on that.

The partnerships opened up and people started going for them right before I became ill. It seems that the "infighting" was worse than I thought and did more damage than I knew or people haven't healed very well from it.

  • In my mind, anyone who has an active channel, post videos fairly regularly (I don't consider once a month regular unless it's fully produced) and shows signs of life should get the chance to be a partner regardless of views, etc.

Honestly, between YT and some of the partners, I think it ruined the chances for other people and how the rest of us work around that and still achieve...I'm not sure yet.

It's certainly not about the money but more channel features and recognition.

  • I must admit, i don't envy anyone who is starting out now. Especially the way us "ordinary" vloggers & video makers are treated by YT. Getting noticed is far harder these days. Having said that, i still regularly get new subscribers. So somebody is finding my videos.

I think the Partnership program should be opened up too. I was lucky & was invited in by YT. The only benefit for me is freedom in the length of videos & the channel banners etc. I do like that.

As for the money..... what money? :)

  • The money is part of the initial issue I think, that's when I recognized a lot of people have no sense of business. I wrote for a website for years and got Adsense revenue for my section pages. With thousands of hits a day, the money was spare change. So I thought it was rather naive for a lot of people to think this was a road to a living.

I was cautious for that reason when I was invited early on and didn't accept. It appears that chance is gone forever.

  • Really it is about the benefit of autoplay, channel design, etc because those elements add a great deal to the value of your channel. If you view your channel, as many of us do, as a place to upload videos and additionally use the embed code on other sites...when people "click through" to your full channel you want them to see the best.

My videos are posted on blogs mainly in Arizona and I get more hits than YT actually shows because Insight is off count for non-partner. YT's loss at this point

  • I've often thought about setting up my own website, but have never got around to it. Partly because i don't have the skills to build it.

If i did, i guess the Adsense/click through side of things would be more relevant.

Also, i'm not business person. Obvioulsy if you are a personal website etc makes far more sense.

I'd love to know if anybody really does make a living from YouTube. Even if they do, it can hardly be a stable income. Unless it leads on to something else outside of course :)

  • Probably the only traffic my site draws is from other places. It provides me with enjoyment and serves an unintended purpose I'm pleased about. The value for me, with the employment situation for mid-age people in the US being what it is, is is a sort of confirmation that I'm web savvy and technically current...a major problem for a lot of 45-62 year olds here.

On that note, it was a shock to me to recently find out that other website blogs were picking up my videos. That started all this!

  • ...on a YT channel alone I don't think even the top partners make a living solely on that. It's multiple streams of revenue from different sites, product endorsements, appearances, etc. combined.

  • Googling your YouTube username can be quite an eye opener can't it? Especially if you allow embedding & syndication on your videos.

Everyone should do that every once in a while :)

  • I think there are several reasons we watch and sub to certain people. Some entertain, others make you think, others inform and teach - and still others inspire. Some even (such as yourself) combine several elements. That's what makes this medium so great. :)

  • I subscribe to various people for those same reasons Danny.

Variety is the spice of life (& YouTube) :)

  • I think it's the good side of internet anonymity. Online we are more open in our praise & say good things we normally wouldn't in real life. The same goes with our conversations & the people we befriend online-here we start conversations, give help, advise, praise & encourage total strangers but most of us wouldn't dream of doing the same with someone we saw on the street-and really, would it be so bad if we did? I noticed I'm starting to be more open with my compliments & how I treat IRL people.

  • I think you're right about the anonymity side of it. it's far harder to actually say these things to somebodies face. The same applies with the hate comments here on YT. They wouldn't dare say some of those things direct to the person. People hide behind that anonymity :)

  • A few people I trained have been inspired to leave the profession!

  • Leaving the profession may not always be a bad thing :)

  • I think we are all inspirational in one way or another. I helped train a lot of staff younger than myself in my previous job and even went for a few drinks with them to increase their confidence and bring some cameraderie into the job. It was always a great feeling to be told how you had inspired them, not only for the job, but in the way you treat others.

To me, we are all equal, only the pay grades differ.

  • Love that end quote. So very true.

I'm sure most of us have been inspired by a teacher, or trainer at sometime in our past :)

  • Hey, you've inspired us. Before we burn down a house across town or hold up a liquor store we watch one of your videos. It's part of our ritual.

So is the life sized poster of you in our supreme leaders basement. Part of our secret rite of initiation is reciting large portions of video number 247. We await your next command oh great and wise AMoose.

  • Aah, video number 247. I always knew that was a good one ;)

  • I've had a few ppl tell me that i have inspired them.Though it's usually after seening them again after a very very long time.

On here though most everyone i watch in the community inspires me at one time or another.

I would have probley only ever watched video's,but i was inspired to make a introduction video response to someone i was watching.

And then i never looked back and glad i didn't.

  • That's great.

As you suggest. I'm inspired, in one way or another, by a whole load of people here on YT. A lot of my video ideas come from other people, via comments etc.

Without that inspiration, i would not make nearly as many videos :)

  • I suppose if it happens frequently enough, you could take it for granted. But, yes, it's happened to me at various times in various ways, and it's always wonderful to read/hear. It's validation and encouragement that everyone could use at one time or another.

  • Also, being told too often might make you a little big headed as well?

There are so many people out there who just don't realise that they have helped, or inspired others in some way. it's a great pity that they may never know that :)

  • The background is gorgeous! This was such an inspirational vlog in it's self talking about inspiration. I'm thinking lol Five stars as always. You inspire a lot of thinking in this noggin and you know I like that : )

  • Thanks.

it's always good to get people thinking. Maybe that's my calling? :)

  • Yes - I suppose I do need to make a response to this... A great topic and one of those things we don't think about often enough.

  • I'm looking forward to seeing that reponse & hearing your story Ken :)

  • Consider your self an "uncle" of the internet :) Someone who we look up too.

  • "Uncle Andy" sounds ok to me. Thanks :)
