from kindergarten till anka left ottawa my dad was in every class with him . i think this song was a hit when anka was 15 , so grade 10 if i remeber correctly . my father also knows the lady this song is beleived to be about even though anka has never come out and admitted it .
One reason this version sounds so much different from later versions could be that it was recorded before he got his nose fixed: resonance and all that...
12 musical morons?! This is one of the greatest classics of ALL time! AFAIK, he wrote this (his first) song for his girlfriend of the time. This one always goes over big, when I do my guitar thing on the street.
For a super rendition of this classic you might want to check out a version by Frankie Lymon which is uploaded on Youtube. No doubt this is Anka's song but Lymon does an exeptional cover that was never released.
my dad showed this to me to my sister and i about 20 years ago. songs like these have a special place in my heart. and this is coming from someone who listens to trance and edm all day long :D
I swear the comments on golden oldies videos are the nicest places on Youtube, all the other areas seem to have nasty comments and stupid arguments but I don't think I've ever seen any on music from this era, strange :)
Paul Anka ia a Canadian Icon! Check out the youtube of Warren Dean Flandez' version on Cover Me Canada. He took this song and made it an intense, brooding lament!
@teddibearsworld Seriously? He wrote for Tom Jones and Frank Sinatra, the theme to "The Tonight's Show Starring Johnny Carson," and co-wrote Michael Jackson's "This Is It." Not exactly a one-hit kid.
There were other claims that it was actually a church girl or a high school friend who was the "Diana." So it might not have been a babysitter at all.
yo im only 19 but u could never tell because ive been listening to stuff like this since i was like 11, damn i love this kind of music, why cant present day songs sound like this lol so i can finally listen to the radio!
Did Anka get a nose job later in life? In all the photos of him when he was older, his nose seem to look funny. His nose here looks like a proper Arabian nose (actually he could pass for Latino like Ritchie Valens as well.) Whatever, he's a great talent.

I have Greek origins as well, the Mediterranean region is a great fusion of cultures.............love the food, heading to a Greek festival this weekend, craving some baklava!!!!!!
There is no way I could listen to today's music 20 or 30 years from now with the same sense of nostalgia that I do with this song and other songs of the '50s '60s, or 70's Some early '80s.
WELL.. i dont think you a twaaat.. you can be anything but that.. this music still holds vibes.. I was a square and told to keep away from teddy boys.. what fun we had during those teenage years.. i was in Australia during some of those years.. love Paul Anka and still do.
One of the many classics of a bygone era! The music of those days was definitely better. I mean, we are enjoying music 60 years old, would anyone be listening to today's music in 2070? I doubt it.
Hard to believe -- but it is true -- that Paul Anka WROTE "Diana," "Lonely Boy" and "Put Your Head on My Shoulder" -- all #1 hits -- when he was just a teenager. Later on, Paul Anka also wrote the theme song to "The Tonight Show With Johny Carson" and Tom Jone's biggest hit, "She's a Lady". HENRY.
I love this song so much!!!! I'm one of the 97' babies i'm 14 but i would rather listen to the 50's over this music today!! i love 50's been listening to it since i was 3! Me and my grandma would be dancing around in the living room!(:

U be 5-8 blonde and yeah, look good in the bikini, but that's not why I liked you. You have a warm heart. That's worth more than Gold
I Love this song omg, Ive only just found out about Paul anka!! I cant believe what ive been missing out on!!!! I really shouldnt have been borin in 1994 xD the music wernt THAT bad, but seriously, I would have rathered, rock and roll, music with emotion, vintage cars, lots of close fsmily, having street parties, and half penny sweets etc, nowadays you cant do nothing or have nothing, people have to ruin it!!
This reminds me of my dad he used to sing this song when i was a youg girl he had a very short life and died at the age of 48. but i can still picture him singing this song.
@officialdjrequezt Technically Eminem is not bullshit! He sings about his life and himself and his true feelings thats real music! just like 50's and 60's etc, I listen to ANY TYPE of music litrally, accept crappy rap that has no feeling to it and is about sex and girls, whereas one of the few rap artists such as eminem I like because he puts feeling into his lyrics. JUST Because you dont like it doesnt mean its not music, just like the people who dont like this kind of music (which is stupid)
@officialdjrequezt Uh huh, you wanna live in a time where you have to worry about a global nuclear war and racial oppression instead of a technologically advanced, racially equal society because of one good song you heard, dipshit. If you dont want to listen to today's music on the radio, listen to an oldie channel.
I feel that I was not born right decade! I like Paul Anka and the songs of yesteryear! Today's songs are no content as I miss the times of old! Once everything was innocent and beautiful I wish I was born at the time
Wow !! As often as I've heard this great song,I never realized the soul Paul added at the very end as the song is fading. It's no wonder that a classic melody like this & a fine singer like Paul Anka could still bring out hidden treasures to make me dig this gem even more. Thanks for posting !
Having grown up in the 50's and 60's I know what a magical time it was for music.I hear these old songs and remember the hot rods, wearing blue jeans that fit, combing your hair back to look like Elvis and the dates on Friday and Saturday night.Going to sock hops in the school gym and girls who looked like girls.Poodle skirts, the guys wearing the black leather motorcycle jackets, yes those were the days when being a teen were the best.Nothing in todays age can ever match them.

AL MIRAR ETA FOTO Y ESCUCHAR ESTA CANCION, ME ACORDE DE TI SAMUEL QUINATAR; ERAS UN TIERNO Y GRAN AMIGO EN AQUEL TIEMPO EN BURGES H.S. SOLO ESPERO QUE NO ME GUARDES RESENTIMIENTO POR HABER SIDO SOLO AMIGOS;LA EDA SI PESA AL PASAR LOS AñOS. QUIZAS NUNCA VEAS ESTO. siempre me acuerdo de ti, mi niño.
Masson Québec canada and raise in Ottawa he did is school in Ottawa , and it there he compose that song Diana to a girl in is class he was 14, he made few contest and wine in Ottawa when he was young , is oncle the great Don Costa give him is first chance recording is first single Diana and the flip side was down by the river side. a great guy I saw one day in Ottawa canada and everything whent good for him until today. a great canadian anQuébecois.
The 50's and 60's were magical. I only wish I had known how special they were at the time. Not that I didn't have a great time and some really great memories, which the music brings flooding back, cause I did. It would be nice if my son and his kids could experience them.
I pray for the time travel machine to be invented and available to all.

swampwiz 6 months ago
@swampwiz No nose job but Paul Anka is 15 in that pic. He is from Greek origins. Like most of the Mediterraneans he bears our genes ... Our nose grows a bit longer than common. Big nose like they say is also an indication for a respectable reproduction tool. lol . Paul Anka is close to Latin descent being from the same sea as we are and our cultures have fusioned in the past.. Wow we found 5 Haters...I guess a woman named Diana dumped him/her...this is a really nice song..Oh Please stay by me Diana.
I am 28 now and I hated when my uncle played oldies till 4 am, but now I am so addicted to oldies, lol and other than the Shirelles- Solider Boy, this is one of my most favorite songs…

The 50's and 60's were magical. I only wish I had known how special they were at the time. Not that I didn't have a great time and some really great memories, which the music brings flooding back, cause I did. It would be nice if my son and his kids could experience them.
I pray for the time travel machine to be invented and available to all.
