What an amazing band......great musicians ( esp. Peter Cetera, Terry Kath & Lee-trombone) and the best looking group of men I have ever seen-each and everyone of them...gorgeous and talented !!!! love them !!!
@TheLar1969 If a live version is exactly like the studio version, then suspect lip-syncing! Seriously, what would be the point of performing exactly like the studio version?
I remember this special. During one of the music breaks, they showed a few members of the band firing off a .45 auto pistol near the woods. Kath may have been one of them; since he loved guns. We all know how that ended years later.
Maybe I'm losing my mind, but I swear I had a version of Chicago's "Call on Me" that had that great drum solo at the end going on by itself for a couple of minutes (might have even been on 8-track!). Anyone have info or a recollection of a version of this song that went for about six minutes?
Thanks for posting. I was in high school in the Washington D.C. area when this aired. I had been looking forward to it for about a week, but the local TV station on another channel aired at the same time some special on Watergate. My mom was obsessed with Nixon & his cronies, had to watch it, so I never got to this this til now. I am pissed off at her all over again!
@thefirefighter2011: IIRC, it was a Friday night and if it was August, 1974, my guess is that it pre-empted The Brady Bunch and The Partridge Family, but I COULD be wrong.
And so we have the comments/rantings, of thefringefilms and murderousbastard83. Did they watch the same video? Did they hear the same song? Now it becomes evident why we have both like and dislike buttons!
Boy, does THIS bring back memories! I was 10 years old when this was broadcast on ABC and I remember watching it--it was August, 1974, and I was just about to go into 6th grade.
Anyone who talks poorly about this song can literally go fuck themselves! Lee Loughnane wrote a great song. They didn't go downhill until they got rid of Guercio and Kath shot himself.
If I had to endure Peter Cetera turning my once amazing band into a commercial crudfest I would put a gun to my head as well. This song is purely disposable ball-less pop rubbish. The guitar is utterly negligible here. Without Kath, Chicago was never the same.....ever. It's always best to leave the mambas, sambas, rhumbas, and bassa novas to Santana please....
First saw them when they came to the University of Florida in the mid 70s (can't remember if it was 75 or 76). I've loved them from before then of course, but jumped at the chance to see them live.
Thank you for posting this video. Chicago was my favorite band from 1973, when I first heard of them until 1978 when Terry Kath died. I went to more than a dozen concerts and enjoyed each one. After he died I went to one more at the Greek theater (which was where I first saw them) and it just wasn't the same for me. I have still enjoyed all the music since then but really miss the first years. Thanks again for the Caribou Ranch video!
Wow, this song is one of my 'faves' ... from one of my long-time 'fave' classic bands. I'm from Chicago, and I remember when they called themselves CTA (Chicago Transit Authority) ... I think with just their first album. Anyway, I love this song ... many thanks for finding this, Cidalia :)
Wow! I'm afraid most people don't remember, and then there are those who will never know, what a talented and great bass player Peter Cetera was at this time. Too bad (sigh).
This was Chicago at its PEAK in the mid 70's. I was a huge fan of theirs and still listen to them from time to time. Specially the first 7 albums (not including the 4th live album). Call On Me has to be the feel good song of all time. Thank you for posting!!
I was lucky enough to see Chicago in late 1977 with the original lineup just before Terry Kath died. It was my first concert and I've seen pretty much every major act since then but this still ranks as the best concert I've ever seen. Danny Seraphin is one of the most underrated drummers out there. David Foster ruined this band.
Surprisingly good recording for an outdoor performance. I'll bet that fresh mountain air helped them re-charge their batteries after all the touring they did in those days.
I Really want to know what happened with that man who plays the drums ( NOT Danny Seraphin ) The man of Brazil, I see he plays with so much style , he was a important member in the group. He gave a important touch and style to the sound,
( Just chek the minute 3:12 to the end and you will see
@lennwinston4077 Laudir de Oliveira is my friend, and he's here in Brazil, playing a lot with several local artists, live and recording, and he's fine, thanks for asking! He has indeed a lot of style and he brought fresh air to the band in the 70's, I totally agree! That's why they put him as an official member after his first recording with them in 1973. He left the band in 1981, and came back to Brazil for good in 1991. Thanks for watching!

I remember watching this TV special on ABC when I was 13 years old back in 1974....I long for good music like that being created and produced today but unfortunately that will never happen....There is just too many "flavor of the month" songs being recorded now..
I agree Chicago got too sappy and passive by 1976 and 1977. A lot of Music did after 1975 besides just the group Chicago did. Classic Rock was and still is the Greatest Music that ever existed on Planet Earth.
@bjggjb The 1960s and early 1970s Elvis. When he was the still thin yet more Mature looking by then. I would especially rip that Black Leather Jumpsuit of of him he wore in the '68 TV Special. All that nice hot sweat dripping off of him with his chest showing and his black hair all slicked up smooth. OMG.
@JamelleFunk770717 cuz they're not enlightened i guess. i love hard rock but these guys are my fav. it's okay to love all forms of rock n roll. i live and breath it when i'm not at work being all serious. thank god for utube.
If Terry Kath was not pleased about the direction Chicago was headed in the mid-seventies, you have to wonder what he would have thought about a mullet-headed Peter Cetera doing sappy ballads with the likes of Amy Grant and Cher in the eighties. I'll take late '60's-mid-70's Chicago any day, thank you very much.
Can you believe this is live. The sound is incredible. These guys were genius. What has music become these days. Lets hope there are some underground bands out there yet to be discovered playing real music. God help us!
My heart is beating very rapidly with excitement watching and hearing this video. I feel like I am right there with them at the ranch. Thanks for posting this all time classic gem.
Early Chicago( the seventies, with the brass and big band sound) were such a joy--- A sunny summer day, the top down on a ragtop, cruisin' and jammin'.
The Rockies in the summertime. . . nothing like it. This must have been a glorified video filmed of the group by CBS. Back then, only the super-groups got this type of treatment, and they were one of CBSs cash cows. An innocent and lost time. Thanks for posting this.
Great group that unfortunately became solely a soft rock ballad pop group. It was Chicago's horns that made them special. Amazing to think of all the great groups that used horns - Blood Sweat and Tears, Earth Wind and Fire, Bill Chase, KC and the Sunshine Band, and not the least Tower of Power - where have they all gone?
This is why I have the up most disregard for the Rock and roll Hall of fame.. Chicago isn't even a thought in there nominees for induction! They rather be politically correct and induct Grand Master Flash, Run DMC and the annoying slut Modonna .. Hey RRHOF GO FUCK YOURSELF!
what great analogies! to me the seventies are just like that. couldn't have put it better myself. i would add ice cream sundaes at the mom n pop variety store (chic's).
the trombone is the reason. yes, they all play, but the uniqueness is that omnipresent in-your-face trombone sound. every tune you've ever heard them do you probably remember the trombone part...
uuu, que rolononon, con la maestria de los 8 musicos que tenian chicago en esa gloriosa época:cetera, lamm, parazaider, lougnane, seraphine, pankow,de oliveira y sin olvidar al inolvidable terry kath (q.e.p.d)
Heard them first in '69', saw them first in 71, last saw them 9/2/09 with ew&f. Must have seen them 10-12 times in between. Saw this when it orginally aired. They were the best then and are still the best.
This band was so damn tight, so impressive in its abilities, that's it just staggering to watch and listen -- even 35 years later. I wasn't even around when this concert took place, but I've been alive for all the pre-packaged slop that's out on the circuit now and in recent years. These guys here simply brought their instruments, voices, and passion -- and kicked ass. No lip sync crap. No recorded background music blaring out. No special effects. It's all real and right there. Amazing.
Chicagoin all their glory alloriginal members and laudir at the caribou ... those were the days feel bad for those who never got to see them at their greatness
I was just 6 years old in the summer of 1974...... My parents owned a horse farm in Medford, NJ...... Call on Me...... what a phenomenal summer!!!!! Chicago, you were the spirit of my early childhood....... '75 and beyond..... Thank you for the best years of my life, brothers...............
disco4ever loves this great Chicago tune, Cetera absolutely rocks!! Hey Steve, all the best to you for the 09/10 school year. When feeling stress, just play this song, all will be well....... Love D4ever!!!!
Wow! Thank you, Idalia, for sharing this video! It seems like a soundcheck or rehearsal! I love this footage, the rehearsals, all the behind the scenes and the making of. Thank you, Idalia!
Thank you idaliacastro for sharing this video with us! I've been following this group of talented musicians since my older brother first turned me onto them in 1969 when I was 8 years old. The very first song he played was "Fancy Colours" and then 25 or 6 to 4. From those very first two songs, I became a Chicago fan for LIFE!
The story on the ranch was extra special to me as well. Thanks again!

Today's music cannot even hold a candle to the great music of Chicago and the 70's.

Why do the Chigago horns sound so unique to that band?
marvy1118 2 years ago 4
the trombone is the reason. yes, they all play, but the uniqueness is that omnipresent in-your-face trombone sound. every tune you've ever heard them do you probably remember the trombone part...
trumpdawg23 2 years ago 4
I agree, trumpdawg32. James Pankow's sound is so big and so open. His horn must have a huge bore.

uuu, que rolononon, con la maestria de los 8 musicos que tenian chicago en esa gloriosa época:cetera, lamm, parazaider, lougnane, seraphine, pankow,de oliveira y sin olvidar al inolvidable terry kath (q.e.p.d)
lopezvillaverde 2 years ago
Heard them first in '69', saw them first in 71, last saw them 9/2/09 with ew&f. Must have seen them 10-12 times in between. Saw this when it orginally aired. They were the best then and are still the best.

crewmom, I envy you like you couldn't believe..... Chicago was the epitome of the best times of my life as a very young child in the early '70's.....

What a great version! Better than the studio!
drkam6 2 years ago
It almost seems that the studio version was blended with the live version at the end......
bds1167 2 years ago
Was this truly live or a studio version blended with the live version at the end?????
bds1167 2 years ago
It's all live. The remix is entirely different. The vocals are different. Every beat of Seraphine on the drums is on realtime. This version rocks!

Amazing.

Yes! This is one of my fav songs from Chicago. That Latin touch to this song is so great! You just don't get the musicianship like this today. :-(
