i think all the haters in here need to grow up personally i like older american cars. but im not going to rag someone for their interest in a swedish, japanese, chinese, or german car. all cars where not created equally but if you take care of about any car they will take care of you. there are exceptions to the rule but for the most part maintenance is key.
@BadNews031 Thanks alot! Its good to get some comments from the motherland. The car is running much better this summer. Look at my other videos. The wagon just ran 11.46 a couple weeks ago
@ken377lx .... that car is awsome =D i have a dad who had volvo since his younger days =) he began whit volvo 140 when i had his driver licence as 18 year old in 1975... then he drive 145 and after that a volvo 240 =D and later 740 and later on 940 =D these cars are so awsome and still the best =) the old ones rules the road =D but now the japan has bougth volvo company and today ive seen the newer ones... they arent good and they have changed... then again... i like the old ones =D
@eagleeyes170 that its fully electronicaly controlled ignition, like on newer saabs, and for example 3,8 gm v6(atleast som of them) have coilpacks instead of a distributor it work much better if youre trying to get the most horsepower you can:D
It has custom forged pistons, and a Cometic headgasket (packning). Its a little noisy when cold in part because of the loose fitting pistons. The motor is about 8.5:1 compression.
@madjimms Yes. Also some people just use B230FT pistons. They are already a low compression turbo type piston that is reasonably strong. They have survived up to about 400hp in my friends car. But you have to be really careful with the tuning. He eventually busted all of the ring lands with a minute slip on the tune. Forged racing pistons can take alot more abuse.
man thats a bundle load. my dad has been a volvo mechanic for 25 years. he told me that my volvo had that b23 block in it with 16 valve heads. he knows a few tricks i can do to bump up the hp.
My most favorite Volvo ( out of the 10 or 11 I've owned ) was my 1982 240 DL. Of course I bought it about four years ago... Same engine, but tweaked ot the hilt... total power was 345 WHP.. YES **W**H**P**.
The previous owner managed that with about $9k. Motor went for 375k miles until an 80 yr old woman in a Buick decided that red was the new green.
I replaced it with a 1996 850.
Every Volvo I've had has been n awesome car. Only the 240 had electrical problem, which were easy fixes.:-)
Indeed so. I owned an 86 240 DL for about 6 years, kept it mostly stock... but upgraded.... if that makes sense.
An F250 T-boned me at about 60mph, there was a fatality in my car, and serious injury in the rear ( the F250 came through the windows ). I broke some ribs and punctured a lung. Stupid Ford had a frame-mounted one foot thick steel bumper with rammer... five tons behind that @ 60mph.. you're losing. Then the idiot jacked the truck up about six inches...missing the bars the doors...
The strut tower brace is from Cherry Turbos. It was also sold through IPD for alot of years. Try them. I think they still have something available. There is another brace that you can't see on the bottom of the k frame that stiffens the bottom suspension points. Its probably more important than the top one really. Also from Cherry Turbos.
Its a B23 shortblock with aftermarket forged rods and pistons, and a 16v head from the junkyard. The big turbo makes it all go with lots of fuel from a megasquirt efi setup.
YES, every old volvo needs this engine. So weird that this video gets so much traffic. I have many better videos of the car in action that never get visited. This one is just lame.
First of all mrnatron you cant be that good and even know what the hell u are talking about Ive worked for Volvo as a Technician not a mechanic for 12 years and never seen electrical problems besides the coating coming of the wires in the 80's models big deal at least they never killed all of nature with oil burning worn out rings like the japs of the 80's i dont know what u drive but dont put down one hell of a car and have more respect for yourself are u a tech or a greasmonkey?
Their electrical system is fine, they just had a problem with the engine harness insulation burning off of the cars made in the mid 80's. After that was fixed there was no problems whatsoever with the electrical system. And by the way, a show car is a show car whether it's expensive or not. VW Bugs are showed and restored all the time and they are one of the cheapest cars ever made.I don't care if you abuse your cars, just don't tell people they're stupid for wanting to keep their Volvo nice.

I'm more than happy to provide you with more info about my 850. It replaced a '93 850 that I wrecked during a blizzard while driving back to school (I live in VT). My current 850 was a 2-owner car and the 2nd owner treated it as if it were a delicate Lamborghini. He never drove the car in rain or snow, and I continue that practice to this day. It is not my daily driver, but rather I use a '99 S70 on a day-to-day basis. And that car has but a mere 91k on it.

@ken377lx How much do custom turbo pistons cost in USD?
madjimms 1 year ago
@madjimms
Piston makers will build a set to order for about $400 - $700 for a set of 4. That should include pins and rings too.
ken377lx 1 year ago
@ken377lx Can lowering compression be done by modifying original pistons, or will that not work?
