Great playing. There's something about playing different types of stringed instruments that makes you get out of a rut... each technique feeds the other ones. Do you play bouzouki and/or 4 string banjo? Same tuning (banjo a 4th different) as the mandolin.

i've got a tokia thunderbird and its crap, way to much weight in the neck for playing while standing, if you let go the neck just drops to the floor, nice looking though

Gibson made the firebird guitar (of the same design) then made a bass out of it ;) (or was it the other way round.... im sure someone will correct me in an insulting way) .... and thats a common complaint with it because of the large headstock and generally heavy body.... generaly huge..... so thunderbirds are a bitch to play.... but they look Fu"king hardcore :P

First way was correct, Gibson made the Thunderbird with the look of the Firebird. It`s true, that they are screwed up a little because of the heavy headstock, but the neck dive of the Epiphone Thunderbird can be fixed bei resetting the strap pin towards the backside of the bass.

And I don`t think, that Thunderbirds are heavy, my Sandberg Bass weights 2kg more.

Hope it wasn`t insulting afterall ;)

It would sound more "authentic" if you used a bluegrass mandolin (the curly "F" style ones). There's quite a difference between those and folk mandos. But then thats a matter of (a) choice and (b) cost!
