My boyfriend's Basset does this. He bit my lip. I was just petting him and he snapped without growling. He has snapped at me about 5 times now, over nothing. That was the only time he bit me.
Yep, mine does exactly the same thing. I love him (his name is Dopey by the way) but god forbid that boy needs a good spank in the butt from time to time.
Please do something about this behavior now. Tell you why. I adopted a 7 year old Basset from a rescue which reacted similarly from the start. He hated to be disturbed when sleeping.
One day he was outside sleeping in the sun and a friend's 5 year old ran over to pet him. My friend had been warned . His boy had been warned. He had played with the dog for years! The boy got bit in the face. Not hard but fast...
The boy is fine now. It hardly shows now a year later...
I jumped about 3 inches out of my chair. Wow, thank godness a child didn't walk by. Basset's can be spooked while sleeping and they are very dominate over their food. But I don't think I would encourage this behaviour. I have a Basset too. They are the best.
HOLY CRAP. his back made me jump..guess i had the volume up to loud...whew.
the basset hound we had when i was younger was very sweet. but the one i have now was abused as a puppy, and has some dominance agression issues. hes bitten all of four of us in the house. only drawing blood once...but weve been working on it. or i have at least. because when its not with food hes snatched out of the trash, he is the sweetest, most beautiful basset. and i dont want to get rid of him.
He is really a very good dog. He has only drawn blood on me one time. I startled him while he was asleep and he bite me on the forehead. My head spewed blood, but it really was not so bad, just one canine tooth punctured me. I guess I should not have had me head so close to his while he was in a dead sleep. He really did not know what he was doing. It is not in a Basset's nature to bite. They are all bark and no bite.
The problem is that this is not good. This type of behavior may be acceptable to the owner of the dog, but it is one step away from a bite. If something happens and this dog has to go live with someone else, he could face euthanasia due to this behavior. Stop the pattern. When he gets in the chair, leash him up and go for a walk or something.
haha-- what is it about hounds that makes them not like the "monotone command"? i used to say, "i'm gonna take that cheeto" to my basset and she'd react the same way.
he looks just like my basset

My basset did the same to me once for exactly the same reason, basset's are very gentle dogs.

@DogsFourFun Let sleeping dogs lie, there is truth in that.

This is more like play behavior. I had the sweetest dog in the world and we would do similar things. It was playing.
