Um what i think you all should know is that you don't attack with the sharp end of a katana, you use the back thats why it's blunt and when there is a opening you use the sharp end. Did the abused, cheap china steel junk, snapped and spring back to cut you yet? No sword is made to chop wood. Find softer material approximating flesh and bones. Very light green branches are safe. And get a axe for the wood chore.

@newtubetubetube Thats not true, a cheap katana(anything not tamahagane or L6) should not be used to cut wood, if you can cut wood with an axe, a real sword should be able to do it better and take less or no damage, its a sword.

I am loving all the abuse this guy is getting from "serious" martial artists....he is doing what any good samurai would do!! he is testing the blade possibly to destruction. I always buy swords in pairs, one to test, one for competition!...I suspect these abusive types don't even do any form of sword fighting, otherwise they would have more respect for the fact a blade can break...easily. All swords (asside from cheaply made immitations or wall hangers) are lethal and are made with a specific purpose and a style to match. A european broadsword used with a Japanese style will be inefficient, likewise with a katana and a european style. Some styles feel more natural to people than others. Some forms of combat work better in certain situations, so its not a matter of what sword is better. What style for what situation and what opposing weapon is a better arguement.

@SouthFloridaBiker I would say so. High carbon steel blades are required for any reliable cutting. Sharpness is a major factor in cutting, but lesser quality steels are more prone to damage and wont hold a sharp edge for very long. You can get a pretty decent quality sword for less than $300 that is hard enough to hold a very sharp edge, but durable enough to not take as much damage as, say, 1045 or 1060 steel. What sword are you looking at, specifically? I might know something about it.
