Abraham was the son of an Egyptian Priest who tried to do the same thing when Abraham was a boy. His father attempted to kill him as a sacrifice to the Egyptian Gods (aka Satan). Abraham was very old when he finally had his son Isaac. It was a great trial of his faith to wait so long for a son to pass on his name and priesthood.

I think it was a difficult way to be taught this doctrine and concept but I know God intended the message to sink deep into Abraham's heart. The first things were the words of God. A testimony or spiritual witness. They actually talked with God, had dreams and visions, and saw the future. We have those writings today to learn from and to help us prepare and learn the ways of God. The book is a mere convenience. Really all should know God as Moses did.

@mitchTwitch - But not all are worthy to speak directly with God. Even the people of Moses couldn't stand for Moses to be gone too long before they went back to idol worship and wickedness. Moses gave them the ten commandments but intended to give them a higher law to live by. Their descendants had to wait until the time of Christ for that higher law and most rejected it then too. Yet the call went out first unto the Jew and then to the Gentile when missionary work began.

@mitchTwitch - Jesus Christ also gave us the Higher Law that is found in the Sermon on the Mount. Interesting is the fact that Moses got the Old lesser Law from on top a mount as well. Our relationship with God shows whether we live the higher law or lesser law. The lesser law was based on punishments for disobedience and had a few guidelines. The Higher law is more personal based with no punishments besides disfellowship for severe disobedience. We live by the Spirit instead of by rules.
