stephen furlong worked as a conductor for the CPR as it operated on this line, he was too fat that he get stuck on the doors of the stainless steel passenger cars also when he rode on the switchers his wieght made the locomotives go out of control. Now since he is retired he just rides down the old tracks in shopping carts along with his wife jake furlong there they can relive the times when they took the train going down this old track
Tracks are still in place... but its been almost 10 years since it has seen a train. Canadian Pacific and the city of Vancouver have had ongoing court case battle about what to do with the land... I haven't heard any updates recently...
@mattyrob87 The city won the court case. Basically it means the city has the right to determine land use, and Vancouver has decided to retain the Arbutus line as a 'transport corridor'. Rumour has it that the line will eventually become a tram system that will link with the small section they relaid along the south of False Creek for the Olympics, but when or if this will ever happen remains to be seen.
Man, I used to live in Kitsilano and always thought it would have been neat to ride on the train right down to the Granville Island area. At one time that line extended across False Creek but they took down the crossing in the 1980's.
I remember one summer evening seeing a young boy in the locomotive cab with his Dad. What a great evening that must have been for him!
I purchased this DVD, brings back many memories from when I worked near the tracks. Anyone who loves trains and knows about the Arbutus Line,..MUST buy this DVD.
