  • Great movie moment. Loved this scene when I first saw it as a little girl and still love it now ,maybe even more. But as a woman who also loves to work with wood, hammer, saw and axe I am glad to live in a dífferent time and place.

  • @brisco42 Thanks for the tip. What little I heard of Zhivago & Lawrence was so impressive that now I have to watch them both to truly appreciate the music.

  • One of many great scenes in Witness but this, this is the best along with the kiss in the film. A brilliant movie. Hitchcock would have even said I could have not made it any better.

  • I could listen to this soundtrack all day long

  • this becomes a "classical" - most brilliant soundtrack - up to now the best film music I 've ever heard - heaven !

  • These people are onto something. Live simply and within your means.Don't get carried away with possessions.Help each other. The world would be a better place if we took a leaf out of the Amish book every now and then.

  • @samskeeter1Good Post! Wouldn't you love to live in a community where people lived peacefully, helped each other and had rules to live their lives by without too much clutter...I would, I think most of us would live happier more forfilled lives.

  • @lndac02 They probably live longer as well. Yes we could learn A LOT from the Amish.

  • @brisco42 They do it to live forever, not just a bit longer...

  • @tburzio That is a very good perspective on the Amish. Thank you I never thought of that.

  • This was my favorite scene. And the music is beautiful!

  • @rexbo2000 Same composer that did Lawrence of Arabia and Doctor Zhivago. You probably knew that already but if you did not, well worth your time to check out both soundtracks especially Zhivago.

  • What a magnificient soundtrack!!!

  • A fine barn but t'is no pool, English

  • @billsfansw The Simpsons. Very nice!

  • That's ME in the first wagon with the long weed in my mouth, on the right...THAT was a FUN shoot! -Ethan Tudor W.

  • apparently the Amish aren't allowed to have videos made of them, so the people we see here are actually Mennonites

  • Lucky the health and safety guy didn't drive by - he would have served a notice.

  • This is G-d ppl, the ones who hold amerika up, for them this G-d 4saking contry still up.

    what make amish diferents is

    JESUSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS

    THE KING OF THE JEWS.

  • I betcha that one chick in the blue got gang raped

  • i like Amish!

  • psh, i have a way nicer hat than those guys.

  • why have they translated the amish as well! , it definitly loses something

  • One of my favourite scenes in a movie. Absolutely beautiful!

  • das is doch mal teamwork =P

  • The Amish put all the socially acceptable religions to shame, especially those that crashed into buildings 11 September 2001.

    Cheers!

  • WTF ARE THEY SAYING

  • great music... its perfect.

  • Hints at the double meaning of "Witness."

  • mhhab total lust bilder tauschen und chatn bin so einsam brauche dringend beschäftigung

  • Di boue awwa e scheeni Schier!

In Europa honn mir imma winischa gudde Hondwerka! They are another type of Amish, they are Hollywood-Amish people!

  • Deren erzgebirgsch,jenseits....

MERCI !

  • I miss this corporate feeling of the Amish people in our (modern) society today.

I admire these modesty and helpfulness. Why less people consider those values as unimportant? :(

  • I don't want him neutral I want him dead.

  • Warum?

  • Be careful out there among the English.

  • great movie in any language,German goes very well with this film, and Ms. McGillis is beautiful!

  • I studied some German in high school and thought it odd the actors were speaking High German rather than Pennsylfaanisch Deitch. Then I realized this is the Greman language version of the movie. That explains Amish people speaking in High German!

  • That's right actually in the original version their kind of German sounds like a Russian German accent, Pennsylfaanisch Deitch you call it?!

That background music is awesome, could watch the scene over and over again just because of the music!

  • Yes. They're speaking High English. We Germans call it Hochdeutsch, but there's no German-Russian acent. I konw it, cause I'm living in Germany, but learn english only at school.

  • @1novemberkind1 There is no such thing as High English. The Amish speak a language they call "High German". That is the exact translation of "Hochdeutsch"

  • I know that there's no High English.

We're talking from the same thing.I wrote English, but I ment German. It was a mistake of myself ;-)

  • I thought they spoke some dialect of Schwabish. Why would they have any kind of a Russian accent unless they came from Talinningrad?

  • Comment removed

  • @seancoxen Lol, that only eplains that movies in germany are snyched in high german, nothing more and nothing less. All the movies in germany, that are synched sound like this!

  • yeah what if you dont speak english?

Not everyone has it that easy like you

  • english is not my native language either, i'm from the netherlands.

    but I do learn english

  • yeah so do I but there are people who have just little to no english knowledge (about to thirds of the population), iI dont know, maybe it´s more important to the netherlands than to the germans

  • why do you expect us to learn english if you obviously dont speak enough german to understand movies in our language, why do u even watch this if you dont like it

  • Music from a 15th century cathedral....

    Beautiful!

  • wow those movie stars can do everything

  • A great scene from a brilliant film - and the music is just magnificent.

  • Thank you for posting this!

This beautiful scene is my favorite non-violent moment in the film-and the music is hauntingly beautiful, just lovely. :-) ♫

  • The music is of a monumental beauty!

It is the kind of music which could be best played inside one of the 13th century cathedrals in France or Germany.

Even when not being raised in a Christian manner, like me,being in such a cathedral makes one humble and respect the maker of our universe.

  • Alexander Godunov & Viggo Mortensen make the handsomest Amish men I've ever seen ! Carpentry is the Sexiest job, isn't it ? It's the leather tool belts & the lean bare forearms ! I LOVED THIS MOVIE !

  • As I child I had NO IDEA Viggo Mortensen was in this film! Wow! And yes he and Alexander were two gorgeous Amish men in this film-beautifully cast.

    R.I.P. Alexander

  • Amish, great people!

  • I love the Amish!

  • I love the Amish too-I grew up in Philadelphia and they have always been a part of my life. :-)

  • Yes, that would be great!

  • Does anyone have the video without the voices? Just the music?

  • yes, search in youtube "building the barn- Maurice Jarre

  • In the end Daniel, and not John, got the girl

  • The repeated motif reminds me of Pachelbel's Canon.

  • One of my favourite bits of music. Perfectly matches the scene

  • I think in many ways this scene is the heart and soul of the movie.

  • Great movie

    humane and inspiring

  • Amen to that :)

Theres something about this scene, so brilliant but so simple, the music suits it perfectly.

Harrison Fords best performance easily !

  • Heitzudags hen Mir eppes verlore, wo findt Ma die Unschultichkeit? Alles Neies iss nett Gut.

  • Genausso red ma bei os oh.

  • "Dutch" is an old American misunderstanding of the name.. They were, and are, Deutsch.

  • Or Swiss. Huldrych Zwingli, the reformer who started the Anabaptist movement, came from Zurich. Menno Simons, who founded the Mennonite sect, actually did come from Holland, but he drew most of his followers from across the Scheldt.

Some of my own ancestors were Mennonites, who emigrated from Bern to Bucks County in the mid-eighteenth century. My great-great-great-grandfather left the church to fight in the Civil War -- bloodletting even for a just cause being a big no-no.

  • "Dutch" was an old misunderstanding by the English too. :)

  • Can anyone tell me what this piece of music is called thats played over the barn raising scene?

  • It is called:Building the barn.(!)

    Composer:Maurice Jarre.

  • Amish women are so hot!

  • Such people really still life today ! Yesterday I was in a church like this and invited to lunch by a family with 14 children. Such people also really live in Germany. But German newspapers make bad news and bad reputation about these people ! But remember : This media-news is only "politics" and a big lie ! We have done something wrong in the education of our children in Germany !

  • this is my favorite scene from the film. I bought the soundtrack for the accompanying piece and wore out the tape

  • I still have the tape and play it a lot. Amazing soundtrack, lookinf for it on CD.

  • The true magic of a simple down to earth life, happiness is not related to big cars, big jobs,or big titles on business cards!

    Great music!

  • That is a beautiful comment, and so true. The Amish are the only ones who realize what it means to be fully human instead of fakely human.

  • Um......and living your entire life under rules so strict that you can't wear yellow or expose the top of your head really means you're living a human experience to the fullest?!?

  • Well, you would have to understand what "human" means to understand what I said. Sorry.

  • Fully human? What does that mean?

  • That's kind of like the guy saying "Smart? What does that mean?" Either you know it or you don't. Obviously many people here are part of Generation Cell Phone and therefore can't be helped along the path. There is hope, though, so don't give up.

  • Or maybe your definition of "fully human" just makes no sense.

  • @Paulelly15 people dont have to step back 200 years to enjoy a simple and happy life.

  • @Paulelly15 That is so so true. The Amish could show us a thing or two.How to get on with and cooperate with your neighbours for one.And what can be achieved by a group of people working together

    Echt KLASSE Film!! 5*
