  • You are an idiot. DRM = Digital Right Management.

Also DRM is a joke honestly. Even in windows 7, I can crack without any issue any DVD, CD are laughable, and any DRM on games is a joke honestly.

Really? Apple Doesn't do DRM. Fucking retard. Itunes has some aggressive DRM, and same thing with Mac OS (though not as aggressive as Windows 7)

Shut your bias hole, and stop bitching about DRM, since it's joke and anyone with a brain can bypass it.

  • OHH, so I should just QUIT the OS that I've been using for YEARS for this crap!?

NEVER!!! WINDOWS FTW!!!! (except 4 Windows XP)

  • YOU ARE SHIT! GIVE ME YOUR ADRESS AND STEVE JOBS WILL RAPE YOU, BECAUSE YOU ARE A FLAUSE!

  • If you shouldn't get Windows 7 because of DRM you can make that same argument for Mac OS X. Windows maybe a bit more aggressive but Apple is just as complacent.

If DRM is a good reason not to buy Windows, the same applies for Mac OS X.

One is really not better than the other in this regard.

    It's like comparing dictatorships.

  • If you guys hate DRM, stop the piracy that won't get them to stop using it. "Man up", stop buying any and all DVD, Blu-ray, cancel iTunes accounts, cancel Netflix, and do NOT pirate. Stop going to theaters, no more buying CD's.

Within 2-3 months, they'd lose so many tens of billions they'd run to Congress and beg them to get rid of DRM, hell maybe even void the whole DMCA. As long as you don't pirate and tell them it's cause of their DRM and sick greed.

  • PC'S SUCK SO BAD ITS FUNNY!

  • lol itunes uses drm torrenting FTW

  • and you seem to have summed up zune you macfaggot.

  • and on top of tht apple is getting more agressive with drm than windows via app ans itunes also ipad

  • u just somed up zune not windows 7.

  • mah choise is ma... windows xp :D

  • I don't care. I say everyone needs to download and install limewire, windows mac or linux, download as much shit as your hard drives can handle and redistribute it. lets destroy microsoft and all its microshit inventions.

  • What i find scary is that microsoft is currently pursuing the development of so called nexus-aware computers. The result will computers that will only run the windows operating system and nothing else like say linux. Microsoft might get its way if the pc manufactures are too afraid to say no. Microsoft is starting to become a far more scarier control freak than apple.

  • I can understand if Microsoft wants to limit the use of illegal stuff.

  • A macfag complaining about DRM? The Hipocrisy Levels are off the chart.

Seriously, I could go on about iTunes store or the Apple TV DVR locks but you won't listen.

Protip: OS X also does all of those checks you've mentioned.

  • my friend gave me a cd and i ripped it for my mp3 player. thats legal right?

  • DRM is easy to get around and any "lock in" in windows is a joke compared to what apple does. And it has nothing to do with any open library. I mean think about, MS could essaly fix all the DRM hacks that are out there and block cracking software but they dont. MS has done a lot of things to making cracking almost anything trivial. I cant help but feel that all of the DRM on windows is just a way to get by with the companies that want it while NOT locking any one out with half a brain.

  • WINDOWS locking people in, fuck your an idiot.

  • lol

  • Im not into collecting music on the internet, it's low quality and too expensive. For me getting good music means spending a dollar on a good quality record album at the good will. :)

  • itunes plus is 256kb so it sounds pretty good but i know what you mean man. I miss the original sound of the LP.

  • Try taking a screenshot of a DVD on OSX faggot

  • that violates copyrights of the movie studio, apple cant allow it. you have to use 3rd party apps

  • thats my point, apple is restricting your ability to take a screenshot because hollywood says so, digital rights management.

  • @AppleSoldier exactly :) ..macs suck.. :) its called xp for a reason lmao

  • @georgeySmith69 u sure can!

  • well i don't see any DRM enforcation on my computer running vista, and i use media player all the time. the only real time i am really "assaulted" by DRM enforcation is by iTunes. You can't transfer music from one iTunes Library to another from what i understand, and if you can, enlighten me. Apple really is the most aggressive in my opinion

  • Yes you can, home sharing, CDS!!!!

  • my point was, there is no way you can get music from one library to another using the music from an ipod from one library.

  • That's part of Apple's FairPlay agreement. It has nothing to to with drm. As of January 2009, itunes MUSIC is drm free. But not their videos.

  • your videos are so bias. i have bought at least 200 songs from itunes and when i tried to put some on my new env 3 i couldn't because it wasn't an apple product. and itunes rips you of because you have to erase and sync if you want songs from your friends itunes and you still cant keep them if you go back to your itunes library becasue it will prompt you to erase and sync also. this was all before i found out how to get them free

  • Logan, you would need to convert any of the non-copyright iTunes songs to MP3 with Switch sound converter. I did a video on this called "Sound Loving codecs and a Thank you!" about 3 min into it. I hear your frustration, I've switched to buying from amazon, less restriction, MP3 @256kbps (sounds just as good as iTunes AAC) and should work on any media device.

  • thanks man already tried what you said and it works!!

  • Microsoft and DRM is digital communism

  • All DRM is digital communism, whether it be Microsoft's or Apple's.

  • Apple and Itunes is now DRM free.

  • It's only DRM free for music. I would never buy DRM'd movies or TV shows via Itunes.

  • There is software out there that convert your drm media to an unprotected format. I know people who have zune pass then remove the drm just so they can "really" own their music.

  • Neowin today:

"Hacker: Snow Leopard less secure than Windows"

  • Hi pc bitch,

all that hacker said is that snow leopard is lacking of an improved address space layout randomization. now apple can hire that hacker tomorrow and solve the problem. let me remember you that the same hacker said snow leopard would be more secure that windows with both ASLR and DEP and that you dont need an antivirus on a mac.

Let me remember that Linus Torvalds stated that Leopard was a "MUCH BETTER SYSTEM" than windows, too.

  • Blah, blah, blah...sigh

  • Blah, blah, blah... OWNED.

  • Apple also panders to the MPAA and RIAA as well.

Protected Media Path is also as much a part of OS X as well, just as it is with Windows. Itunes HD content will only play on a DRM PMP compliant monitor or TV on a Mac. This DRM is at the core level of OS X

Apple's DRM with Ipods been tied to a particular computer is totally unacceptable to me.

I likes freedom. Finding myself using Linux more and more.

    Agreed DRM sucks big time.

  • > This DRM is at the core level of OS X

Please provide citations to prove your assertion.

  • You want a citation? What do you think i am, a police officer or something?

Protected Media Path is implemented at the core level of any OS whose manufacturer chooses to implement it. This is done to prevent it been bypassed. If it wasn't at the kernel level, then it would be much easier to bypass using video drivers which didn't enforce the Protected Media Path security.

  • You made an assertion that Protective Media Path is part of OSX, and when challenged to prove it, you equivocate, and as such, have proven nothing.

  • I have to prove nothing. You can see for yourself that PMP is part of OS X. It's this simple, one buys or rents a HD TV show from Itunes on a Mac, the only way to play it on an external HD monitor or TV, is if that monitor or TV complies with HDCP. No HDCP = No HD playback. HDCP and PMP is implemented via the OS and drivers.

  • Ha ha, I get it Big Brother. From the book 1984

  • So basically your bashing on ms for wanting to make money?

  • Well I will stick to my Mac OS X and have my DRM then! I am not going to listen to the FSF's whining over the fact that Mac OS X or the iPhone "locks me in". Well I like being locked in, as long as my computer works, unlike Linux!

  • Hope you didn't get one of those Macs with an ATI card. If you did, Linux is your only hope to get it working. That or never updating.

  • Amusing, he whines about piracy but then whines some more about somethig thats meant to prevent it. Herp derp derp.

Im guessing though that if apple were to have this would be the best thing ever. Oh and congrats on reading it like its something you've actually written...

  • microsoft has 95% market share, and need to do things to protect there shit + others DRM doesnt affect my sharing.. SAVE the PIRATE BAY!

  • WTF, they do this to vista to

  • It's "Digital RIGHTS Management" idiot. Apple is no better than MS

    Stupid cracker.

  • Digital RESTRICTIONS Management is a much more accurate phrase to describe this nasty stuff. The consumer has NO rights at all with DRM, and its all about restricting what one can do with digital content. The only rights are with the big media companies which create and enforce this junk.

Calling it Digital Rights Management is all spin, smoke and mirrors.

  • The point of every company is to make money. Why wouldn't you want these restrictions if your a company.

I download movies, steal music, & any other programs I would otherwise have to pay for...

But I can't blame companies for trying to stop me and others from doing this. The point of any business is to MAKE MONEY

I don't see one valid argument that you made?

Please someone... Anyone... Feel free to clue me in

  • Okay then. The point of these videos are to "clue people in" on these practices. A lot of people would think that their computer wouldn't deliberately and arbitrarily restrict their media, as this sort of thing was previously illegal under Home Taping, prior to the DMCA. It also stands to reason that people should be allowed to make copies of their media - they bought it after all. I'm not talking about wide-scale distribution and profiteering, simply making backups and things like that.

  • @tgreer7802 i do that too :)

  • this article is from the FSF, lol

  • DRM wont survive trust me. since users are only interested in free medias as mp3 etc. therefore I don't like it too that microsoft does that, but it wont survive for a long time. cause people will see what it does. I have NO DRM video or soundfile at all. I wont use any DRM files ever.

  • Wow very nice that you actually put this article up here as is!! It is an important issue and the main reason why I would not touch Windows Vista and 7 regardless of whatever technological advancement they have, it just isn't the right thing to do.

  • oh whats dat?

    itunes?

limits the ammount of times you can download the music you have purchased?

    loolololololollolololoololololololololloolololololololol

  • Digital rights management??

  • nice vid could inprove on audio :D

  • This is pure fear mongering, shame on you emeek, i thought you were better then that, I've used vista and 7 (i do use mac as my main) and i've never had this problem, im not going to say it out loud, but i like my movies, and microsoft isn't the one who invented the technology, Intels HDCP is far more used in many dvd players and DVRs around the world, also DRM = Digital Right Management, this shows you did little research and just read off that lame site, worse then 9/11 disbelivers

  • not this again

  • So, Microsoft is putting DRM on all applications so if you have a file that's DRM copyrighted anywhere, but it has limitations or you've illegally downloaded it, Microsoft can monitor whatever the hell you do to prevent you watching, playing, or messing with it? I don't see what's so bad about it. It's preventing theft if you ask me.

  • "I don't see what's so bad about it. It's preventing theft if you ask me."

Don't know about you, but I appreciate this thing called privacy.

  • That's just the tip of the iceberg, it also monitors the hardware, it detects any change in the electrical current such as when a USB stick is plugged in, sends a signal to your video card every 30 seconds, and many stuff stuff behind the scenes... no matter why Vista's system requirement is so high compared to XP.

  • Woah! Sunnz. That sucks dude. So basically Windows 7 will be more of a resource hog due to more DRM checking that Microsoft feels is necessary. This seriously makes me not want to buy Windows 7. What is this, some kind of hostel take over by Microsoft saying that if you want to use our OS were gonna monitor your ass? Basically, yeah.

  • Making a video on how you hate people who pirate music, video's, and software and then put out a video about DRM that protects against piracy just wasn't well thought out Eric (Emeek77). Placing DRM on software is fine to a point. If software restricts that you can only install certain software a number amount of times before it no longer installs then it's wrong. You and I maybe honest toward buying all music, video's, and software, but many do not so DRM has to step in.

  • "about DRM that protects against piracy "

But it doesn't. Like security experts have said, and I am paraphrasing Bruce Schneier here, "Making DRM work is like trying to make water dry", it simply doesn't work. DRM never gets into the way of actual pirates while the end users always suffers.

  • Your correct sunnz it won't prevent people determined enough to pirate a piece of software or media, but will stop the average consumer from trying. It much like that in the real world we can tell people not to do something or prevent them from doing it, if they are determined enough to do it, they will. In Windows having product keys and needing to activate windows has actually helped with lowering stealing even though people are determined enough to crack it.

  • The problem is that you only need ONE person on Earth determined enough to crack whatever DRM they come up. Software encapsulates knowledge, once its been cracked even the average consumer can get it easily; in practice there are cases where people brought legitimate content and were screwed over by the DRM that they had to resort to pirate what they have brought in order to use it because it is easier. Overall it does more harm to the average consumer and doesn't hurt a bit to the real pirates.

  • Love apple love your videos keep them coming

  • you could use an sd card for the phone for music

  • Indeed...good point.

  • I also think it is hilarious how Emeek says if you own a cell and have DRM songs your screwed when you upgrade...in my opinion this bolsters the argument if you want to avoid this DRM issue when you switch cell phones to either buy the MP3 free and clear or subscribe to a "Napster/Rhapsody" service, these are ways around the DRM cell phone switch debacle Emeek seems to get caught up on. Now, I am not advocating any specific service, just ways to possibly use another service.

  • I just love how Emeek shows the "Big Brother Inside" mocking symbol of Intel...now Mac's use Intel for their computers, how fucking ironic! LOL

  • i like the way you made your old videos with the screen recording and isight recording.

  • Want to give you a quick example of how you are so hypocritical in making this video. itunes incorporates drm into any music you put into itunes so you can not share music with others. WMP doesn't do this.

  • it doesnt anymore but you are right :) it is a bullshit video

  • Oh really, that's good to know then. I haven't used itunes since about version 8.

  • haha until a week ago it was still version 8 :) but yeah this was announced earlier this year if i remember right, they said they where going to phase out all drm over a certain period of time. But im not sure what this guys on about apple used to be the kings of drm

  • i believe you but can u send a link to me of where you learned so i can show it to my friend and rub it in his face

  • DRM is fucking bull shit, That is why I download my stuff,, Yes I am a mac User and I download Ilegal content, Big fucking woop!

  • why did you make a video about you hating people who pirate? DRM stops piracy, at-least trys to, and Microsoft is not the only company that uses DRM

  • i was thinking the same thing...

  • Wait, so if I download a song from iTunes now, I can use it as I will, burn it indefinitely, and transfer it to as many computers as I want? Or does it still do that bullshit where you have to register up to 3 computers to hold your libraries?

  • this is what i do to get my free music...go to rhapsody on safari and play a song or wait for it to load. then click window>activity then click on the one thats like 1.4mb (the song)

  • why is this such a big deal?

  • Very well said, instant fave

  • i just hate the god damn DRM.

  • Meh. DRM is fine with me. Its trying to prevent piracy. I dont care about any of it because I buy my CDs and DVDs from retail stores and online via Amazon. Why in gods name would anyone buy lossy music to begin with.

  • You sound like Richard Stallman.

  • Hes quoting the FSF in this video, what do you expect?

  • So don't buy drm music. There are plenty of places that sell it drm free.

  • WindowsSins is a joke of a website. It is ironic that you made a video today talking about how you hate pirates however you just said in that video that it's outrageous that Microsoft tries to stop you from "Sharing Files". Microsoft just announced that most of the DRM file limitations are being lifted in Windows Media Center and Microsoft has not enforced any DRM practices yet. They haven't shut down "unauthorized" applications. Apple is just as guilty as microsoft.

  • Songs from iTunes are DRM free now, so that is a plus.

  • Yes thejakemalloy, iTunes songs are DRM free, however still locked down by iTunes account with sharing up to 5 users. Amazon music doesn't restrict you, thus the reason I switched to Amazon and it also has better prices most of the time.

  • So yeah I have to use iTunes and log in to listen to certain songs I bought from iTunes, yet when I buy songs from Amazon I don't have to do that. I use just any media player I want, go... winamp... The other thing I'm having problems with latest iTunes not playing certain songs or even songs that were burned from CD. If I can't play Journey's Greatest Hits, it makes me a sad panda, yet when I open the folder within iTunes and use VLC or Winamp it plays fine.

  • Microsoft puts DRM in Windows because that is their money maker. Apple has an even worse version of DRM, they don't lock you in the software, they lock you into the hardware. Don't even get me started with the iPod, that is just one big lockdown.

Windows 7 also has less DRM than Vista.

  • DRM? It's the stuff Apple laced on all of the music from iTunes until not too long ago, and will eventually kill our ability to play those songs.

  • well dont you just love apple 

  • I'm mainly a Mac user and I've still got some DRM TV/music from Apple which is quite bugging but I think this current DRM tech is just a brutal knee-jerk reaction out of fear.

While CD/DVD sales lessen as everything goes digital, something else will be designed to lessen piracy and it'll be implemented as a 'standard' and the zombie masses will accept it.

What ever it will be hasn't happened yet, but I'm sure it'll happen.

  • windows is just a tool the ARE THE MAN

  • i don't hate windows but that is bullshit. i don't buy drm music anyway. if it wasn't for games i would just run ubuntu.

  • Go buy a shotgun and lock yourself in a bombproof cellar man, your full of crap on this one. Microsoft bends to the needs of business because its their largest stockholder and profits. They don't go out of thier way to give consumer's a shitty experience dumbass. Usually when someone purchases online music it's in mp3 format and DRM free, so they can use it on any device they wish. Who the fuck would buy DRM media anyway.

  • wow. great vid man

  • audio sounds awful.

  • this means i am staying with windows xp until it is time for a mac :)

  • DRM on video games has gotten so far out of hand . I got gta 4 for pc last night. It was a masssive pain to install. It took forever . I had to sign up for 2 compays rock star and live . The cd key wont not even work at first . i hd so many problems installing the game. It was a nightmare i feel like going back to consoles.

  • Haha! First you make video complaining about pirates, then you make a video bitching about DRM.

  • So what?

  • Because the point to DRM is to stop pirates, duhh. Complaining both about pirates and DRM is like complaining about a bank robber and the security guards in the bank.

  • lol ... great comment

  • Crap Comment more like. All Apple Solider was saying is that we should stamp out DRM and get rid of pirates. DRM would not be needed if everyone did not pirate stuff and shit.

  • Do you know what is the difference? Windows Users can use DRM...Mac Users can not...bad for you...

  • my mac has apps that break DRM, so HAAAA !

  • Show me...play some DRM bluray Movies on you Mac...come on...

  • easy bonehead, I go to google and search, "HOW TO PLAY DRM ON MY MAC" and follow any one of the various methods to do so... come on WHAT ?

  • Linux DRM, oh wait i lied there is no DRM with linux

  • sure there is, Direct Rendering Module works fine for me

  • Yea there are also no apps in LInux. lolpwned

  • DRM is going to exist on the major platforms for media control, get over it.

I wonder when Apple will play ball and include the DRM for Bluray playback.

  • Google apple DRM. Thats all I gotta say. Sad.

  • lol, if your implying apple DRM is anywhere near as bad OR EMBEDDED IN THE OS as deep as windows than your an idiot.

  • No its embedded in the hardware. Thats much better.

  • what about it?

  • Ipod shuffle. That alone is all I gotta say.

  • what the headphones? nobody makes 3rd party headphones with the controls anyways,,,even if they did you might save like 5 bucks.

  • I am sorry whats that? Your ipod has to use itunes for music and third party apps are locked out. You can't sync with anything else but itunes.

Also yes the shuffle doesn't give you an option for headphones Its not about money its about comfort. What about noise canceling headphones. Ever think about that?

  • I doubt that many problems with the apple headphones unless maybe they have deformed ears or something. Also most people love itunes because it is the best player, remember? most of those fancy headphones cost moe than the ipod itself

  • Macward, iTunes is a media store at best, media player would involve using more codecs, which you have to use VLC media player just to fill in the amount of codecs iTunes can't play.

  • huh, i never use VLC. the only reason I have it on my machine is because a long time ago someone was multitasking with it. VLC is a sucky player. i never have any problems playing media because I dont pirate movies lol

  • Well that's great Macward that you don't pirate movies, neither do I, although you may want to talk to Emeek about copying Netflix movies. Anyway, saying VLC sucks and not giving a reason why it does isn't a great argument. If you don't like the GUI look, that can be changed with skins. Either you hate VLC or not, you know that iTunes doesn't cover enough codecs especially .AVI...

  • You have to be a fool to believe that the iPod headphones are good. Mine died out in 4 months!

  • I have a pair of iPod headphones from when I first got my 5th Gen video iPod way back in March of 06. Still work great.

  • Come on let's keep this on topic, this is about the OS... on OSX you can use any media hardware on the planet and alternatives to iTunes and you can still have a DRM-free system... you can't do that with Windows Vista or later even if you use opensource player the DRM is still running under the hood of the OS.

  • Except apple controls you with the hardware. So its a trade off. Hardware DRM or Software DRM. Frankly both suck. Get a PC with linux.

  • My PC actually runs BSD.

  • mine runs a BSoD :3

  • Exactly. If you care about computer freedom, you shouldn't be buying hardware from ONE supplier. That's a total violation of of consumer rights. Run linux on your mac or PC.

And for fucks sake stop calling these videos "mac vs pc". It's mac vs windows.

  • I'd rather have hardware DRM, I mean the hardware is pretty decent. But the software is what you are actually seeing and interacting with when you are using your computer.

  • How about no DRM period? DRM only penalizes honest owners and does nothing to stop real pirates.
