Do you really think it's better to not hold A? I guess I can see some circumstances where it might be better, but it's tough for me to know (when you hold A you seem to get more momentum behind the spin). Did you ever avoid holding in A on the secret wall jump star? I've tried varying it on that stage, but was never able to come up with a definitive answer. For one, I never held A on the first goomba like LDA did because it seemed worse.
I'm not too sure which way is faster, I guess it just depends on what situation you're in. For SWJ, my strategy is this:
- Hold A for first goomba
- No A for the following spin
- Hold A for second goomba
- Hold A for next to spins
