Hi, two days ago I had an interview from a travel agency. They need a car driver who speks english. I`m 50 years old an it was very difficult to me getting a job. They told me I wait for their call. The thing is I studied english between 1979 and 1984! and had very few oportunities to practice it. Since I had the interview, I was searching for refresh my conversation in your tongue, but all of sites I got promise you being free but you have to pay in the end. I`m very glad you are in youtube...
I would like to thank you for all of these helpful videos, but I won't do that because I don't think you actually exist. Think about it: how can be real a person who spend so much of his time to make such outstanding videos, with musical effect , with animations, with very understandable examples ecc. ecc. and all of these for free. These days I have been watching many english lessons videos on youtube, also from well known education company but I find your videos way better.
@patagarro80 Ciao x 3 !!!! Yes, thanks for the compliment. It's great that you noticed I make my videos in my free time and that all of the video editing and music is my own. My wife sometimes helps me when she can and we are working on a Halloween video! Have a wonderful day!
Hello Steve.Lucky you that you can live and see and enjoy every day those majestic mountain and that outstanding landscape..I would like to go over one day and spend unless one week there with my wife and my girls.. Sometime I feel a bit down living here in Toronto, as you know, it is a flat city, but with a lot of nice pictures as well,Vvisiting Vancouver is one of mine dreams since I came to Canada and a friend of mine told me the weather is so nice...
Dear Mr. Ford! I admire you as a Teacher, as a Singer, as a Composer and as a Person! I am amazed by your ability to do a lot of striking things and to do them excellent, exctptional, extraordinary and facinatingly. I am happy to live in the same city that you live. Thank you and your wife very much!
@narbuttryan Steve is amazing and generous teacher and he has taught me sooooooooo much!
Can that action continue? Yes it can!
If look anywhere on google or in an English grammar book you will see many ways to use the present perfect and simple past. You are looking as if you think all is black or white. This or that. Grammar is not like that. "Don't ignore me. Be more responsible and more professional. Please" You should say that to yourself and not our teacher here!
@narbuttryan You need to check your sources before you start throwing insults here. Your first example is using the stative verb 'be'. So I will focus on your second example: "I taught last year." ( this means action is finished and you used a time reference which would ONLY be suitable for the simple past). Second, contrast: I taught for 3 years at a University vs I have taught for 3 years at a University. You explain that difference to me!! Be a better student!!
@narbuttryan Wow! More insults! Your homework has now doubled. Please add to your list:
1. What is the difference between a stative verb and an action verb as mentioned in any grammar book?(Raymond Murphy, Betty Azar etc.) Your understanding of both stative verbs and verb tenses is limited to one example. How about: I am being 29 years old? correct?? I am having a car correct???
2. What is the difference between:
I taught for two years. vs. I have taught for two years.
(no verb is a purely "stative" verb, so the question is a non sequitur - if you don't believe me tell me one verb which cannot be used in a progressive form.)
Simple is the neutral aspect.
Continuous is the aspect which focuses on the activity.
It's difficult to interpret 29 as an activity.. but similar...
@narbuttryan This video is for learners of English who are in need of reviewing the past simple VS. present perfect/perfect continuous, future perfect/perfect continuous. I am flattered by the fact that I "make your blood boil" to the point that you have been anonymously mud slinging out-of -context examples from the very beginning in regard to my lesson. :) I'm sure Raymond Murphy would be flattered as well. :)
@narbuttryan You look like a jealous guy. Why don't you talk about the grammar examples in Steve's video and stop writing BS just to confuse the rest of us.
@narbuttryan What planet are you on? Steve taught us in the video the difference between:
a) I taught for 16 years at onground schools vs b) I have taught/have been teaching for 19 years.
Are you saying example a) is NOT a completed action in contrast to b) and c)? What example from Steve's video are you talking about or are you trying to invent your own to confuse us? I agree with Brunobat! You are just jealous or something!
@AninhaMALima This is an excellent point Ana! The difference between the simple past and present perfect/present perfect continuous are best illustrated in my examples. The present perfect can be used in so many different ways and I will do another video on this for sure. Good job!
For more practice you can check: English Grammar in Use by Raymond Murphy (pages 16 and 28). They also address this in Betty Azar's book, but I prefer Raymond Murphy.
and sorry my writing`s way, it`s just there`s a long time I don`t practice. Thanks, now I will watch all your videos!

OMG what you just said about the PP v PS makes my blood boil because I have to deal with the effects of bad teaching like this every day.
I have been to Canada (is a finished action in the Present Perfect)...
I taught last year. And I teach now.
Don't ignore me. Be more responsible and more professional. Please.

@PrivateEnglishPortal Here is some more homework for you using the stative verb 'have'. What is the difference between:
We had a wonderful dog for 13 years.
We have had a wonderful dog for 13 years.
I am going to give you a week to do your homework, OK?
PrivateEnglishPortal 1 year ago
@PrivateEnglishPortal
"You are being very defensive" is the 'stative' verb to be in a continous form. You're understanding of so called state verbs is very 'Headway.'
"I taught last year" DOES IN NO WAY MEAN THE ACTION IS FINISHED. The Past Simple describes Finished Time (last year) and not Finished Actions.
If I say "I worked here last year so I know how busy it gets! " I am describing Last Year not the Action.
Please consult Swan, Practical English Usage Rule 419, especially 419.6
